Jazz festival, history talks, music and more: Carson City region lined up for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by, including the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, Carson City Library’s End of Summer Learning Challenge, history talks at Mormon Station Park, train rides in Virginia City, a sushi cooking class at Sierra Chef on Sunday and more!

Friday, August 9

— Muscle Powered morning walk at Mills Park. The walk starts at 8 a.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities and events can be found at the Muscle Powered website.

— Demonstrations of Coin Press No 1 at the Nevada State Museum. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. A demonstration of Coin Press No. 1 in the Historic Carson City Mint building. For more information contact Robert Nylen 775-687-4810 ext. 245.

— Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

— Park History Talk at Mormon Station Park. 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. For many emigrants who braved the California Trail in the mid-1800’s, the segment through Nevada was the most hated and feared portion of the entire journey. A park interpreter will discuss what made travel through the Great Basin of Nevada so arduous for wagon trains, and will also explore topics such as the forty-mile desert, the Humboldt River and the legend of the Buenaventura River.

— Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. — Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival begins at Bliss, Governor's Mansion. 4 to 6 p.m. The 16th Annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music and Art Festival kicks off Friday at Bliss Mansion, 608 Elizabeth Street from 4 to 6 p.m., and continues that evening at the Governor’s Mansion, directly across Mountain Street. The free event includes live music, art, food, and tours of the Bliss Mansion. A special feature is art exhibits, demonstrations, and sales including pottery, watercolor, photography, multi-media, painted gourds, Zentangle, and recycled garden art. Reta Hanks, winner of the Jazz and Beyond poster art contest, will be signing copies of her winning art.

— Outdoor activities going on at Living the Good Life Nightclub Bistro and Lounge. 6 to 10 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson Street. Two separate events will take place at 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Live music outside from One Way Street from 6 to 10 p.m. DJ Bebop keeps the dance floor hot all night with jamming music!

— Weekly Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Open Mic Night happens every Friday from 6-9 pm. A to Zen is located at 1803 N Carson St., Carson City. Call 775-691-3945.

— David John live at Ruby's Amphitheater. 6 to 10 p.m. at Red Dog Saloon, 76 N. C Street in Virginia City. David John is bringing a Songslinger show of his own to Ruby’s Amphitheater at the Red Dog Saloon! The night starts with a 7 p.m. dinner. David John performs his original songs at 8 p.m.

— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 6:30-9:00ish.

— Pajama Storytime at the Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Teen Pool Party at the Carson Valley Swim Center. 7:30 to 9 p.m. Enjoy music, fun and food during our teen nights. Cost is $3 for entrance fee.

— Carson Comedy Club features hilarious stylings of Rodney Norman. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street. This Friday and Saturday night will feature the hilarious comedy stylings of veteran performer Rodney Norman at the Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. Rodney was the winner of the Rhode Island Comedy Festival and was also featured in the Boston Comedy Festival. Rodney is a former Marine with a BS degree in Philosophy. He’s been in the comedy business for 20 years and we are happy to have him on our stage.

— Loverboy in concert at TJ's Corral. 8 p.m. at 1627 U.S. Hwy 395 N. Minden. For more than 30 years, Loverboy has been “Working for the Weekend” (and on weekends), delighting audiences around the world since forming in 1978, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitar hot-shot Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene – at Calgary’s Refinery Night Club.

— Party on the Patio at JT Basque Bar and Dining Room. 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. at 1426 U.S. Hwy 395 N. Gardnerville. Party on the Patio! Gardnerville Basque Festival weekend kicks off at the JT with a dance on the patio Friday, August 9th! Beginning at 8:30 pm, we start off with a performance by the Gardnerville Basque Dance Group, then we’ll kick up our heels to The Etchechury Band joined by Jean Flesher. All are welcome! — Movies in the Park featuring "Mary Poppins Returns". 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Park, 1447 Courthouse Alley. Movies will start at dusk and begin when the sun sets around the beautiful mountains.

Saturday, August 10

— Summer Bicycling Series: Tahoe Shoreline to Olympic Village. 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. Join Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space as we explore various biking trails throughout the region. These are not mountain biking trails, but rather relatively mid grade trails that are either paved, dirt, or gravel. A mountain bike or hybrid bike will work best. Each trail will take participants through forests, and along rivers or lakes.

— Muscle Powered Saturday hike at Galena Creek. The hike begins at 8 a.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! August 10, 8 am- Lower Galena Creek Trail- A beautiful 3+ mile hike following the creek along Callahan Park. The trail steadily and gently ascends, crossing the creek several times on well-built bridges. We will start from the trailhead parking lot just before Callahan Park.

— Carson City Natives and Newcomers garage sale to benefit the blind and CHS scholarships. 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 933 Siskiyou Drive. Carson City Native and Newcomers Club will host a fundraising garage sale to benefit the blind and CHS School scholarships. Sale items include children, adult, crafts, and household. When you buy something for yourself, you will also be donating to a good cause. Enjoy the morning and stop by. The event is Saturday, August 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at 933 Siskiyou Drive. The event is hosted by Carson City Native and Newcomers Club, which is a service organization providing donations for various Carson City nonprofits.

— Take a spin with Capital Ford, help Carson Senators football program. 8 a.m. at the Carson High School north parking lot. Capital Ford and Carson High School in Carson City are working together to help raise up to $6,000 in support of the CHS Senators football program as part of Ford Motor Company’s Drive 4 UR School program. The event takes place at the school's north parking lot this Saturday, August 10. For every person who test-drives a new Ford vehicle, Ford Motor Company will donate $20, up to a maximum donation of $6,000. Drivers must be a minimum age of 18, and only one driver per household is allowed. The whole experience takes less than 20 minutes, and 300 drivers are needed.

— Rifle Match this Saturday at the Carson Range. 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Saturday, August 10th, 8AM to 1PM, the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold a series of matches at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range. The matches will consist of an NRA-approved High Power Rifle match, followed by a Bullseye Pistol match. As part of the Bullseye match, a new event will be added: a "Light Rifle Bullseye" match, which will follow the rimfire and centerfire stages of the Bullseye match. The new match is for rimfire or pistol caliber, repeating, magazine-fed rifles with targets at 50 yards. More details and rules can be found on the club's website.

— Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— Jazz and Beyond Music Festival featuring Mayita and the Hotshots, Randy Ide and Jakki Ford. 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mayita and the Hotshots take the stage at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. Randy Ide and Jakki Ford play at the Greenhouse Garden Center at 11 a.m.

— Moonalice, Jerry's Middle Finger and Jonny Mojo and Friends to celebrate at 'The Day After' festival (all day). Come Play with us and see what tomorrow brings! Dance the day away and soak up the sunshine by the riverside in Placerville for "The Day After" concert, celebration of the life and memory of beloved Jerry Garcia. Featuring Moonalice, a Nationally touring psychedelic, roots-rock band of seasoned musicians mixing a variety of genres with extended musical improvisations that evoke a sense of adventure and exploration. With Roger McNamee, John Molo, Pete Sears, & Barry Sless.

— Art Outside: Sunset Photo Hike (all day). Calling all creative adventurers! Join the Parks, Rec & Open Space Dept. on the first Interpretive Program devoted to nature photography! All skill levels are welcome as we hike the Dead Truck Canyon trail and learn different techniques to capture the beauty of Prison Hill at sunset. Feel free to bring a phone, a digital camera, or film! And please make sure to wear close-toed shoes and bring plenty of water & sun protection. See you there!

— Bob Nylen to speak at Dangberg Home Ranch (all day). Bob Nylen of the Nevada State Museum in Carson City will be speaking about “The history of Baseball in Nevada” He will be here on Saturday, August 10th. Please bring your own seating for all events. No dogs at events; legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.

— Hot August Nights Golf Tournament. 9 a.m. at the Carson Valley Golf Course, 1027 Riverview Dr. Come take a swing or two at the Hot August Nights Golf Tournament. It will begin at 9 a.m.

— Plein-Aire Outdoor Painting Workships. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at River Fork Ranch Reserve, 381 Genoa Ln. in Minden. Spend the day outside and create some nature-inspired art on August 10 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and September 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring your own supplies (all media welcome). The $25 registration fee includes guided instruction and supply rental, and 50% of the proceeds will go to TNC. If you are renting supplies, please specify if you prefer watercolor or pastel. Suggested additional supplies to bring: camp chair, water for drinking, snacks, sunscreen, and polarized sunglasses.

— Carson City Park Ranger Speak Series: Local Plant Identification. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Silver Saddle Ranch. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host a series of environmental education events free to the public at Silver Saddle Ranch. Learn about the topics below from a Park Ranger from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. No registration necessary and all ages welcome.

— Our Town in Our Park in Dayton. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Our Park, 370 River Rd. Join us for a jam-packed Saturday in Our Park featuring raffles, activities and plenty of free food. Dozens of local non-profit organizations that serve the people of Dayton and Lyon County will be there.

— Greenhouse Garden Art Fest. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2450 S. Carson Street. This Saturday, the Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City will host its 16th annual “Greenhouse Garden Art Fest” which acts a platform for artists to show and sell their work, musicians to serenade the community, all the while amongst the backdrop of the Greenhouse in full bloom. Last year, the Art Fest promoted over 40 vendors, artists and musicians and this year should be on target for the same participation, said Art Fest organizer Carin Carothers.

— Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. — Guided Tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— History Talks at Mormon Station Park. Two history talks will take place Saturday, Aug. 10 at Mormon Station Park. The first history talk runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The second walk takes place from 2 to 2:30 p.m.

— Carson City Library to host end of Summer Learning Challenge wrap-up party. 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. The Carson City Library is gearing up for back to school with an end of summer party on Saturday, August 10. Youth participating in library activities this summer as part of the Summer Learning Challenge are encouraged to dress up as their favorite sci-fi character and join staff to wrap up the summer devoted to space and science themes. The Summer Learning Challenge began in June with a space-oriented theme designed to encourage people of all ages to read over the summer. The challenge was divided by age, with ages 0-5 years old completing a series of activities with a parent or caregiver. Ages 6-11 have a goal of reading at least 20 hours, ages 12-17 reading 30 hours and 18 and older reading 40 hours.

— Mills Park Train Rides. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson City Railroad Association (CCRA) maintains and operates Carson City’s only Narrow Gauge Railroad and Model Railroad Club. The narrow gauge railroad is approximately 1.5 miles long and runs throughout Mills Park, with a duration of about 10 minutes. The two indoor model railroads are a HO and N gauge railroad, located in the CCRA train station at the east end of the park. Train rides are $2 per passenger, and free for children under 2 years old.

— Back to School Expo at the Meadowood Mall. 12 to 3 p.m. Get ready to go back to school with Meadowood Mall! Join us and the Washoe County School District to learn more about this upcoming school year. After-school programs, registration, health, school counselors, safety, and more!

— Hawaiian Luau at the Carson Plaza Senior Retirement Community. 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Carson Plaza Retirement Center. A Hawaiian Luau in August? Come and join us for a fun and festive day at Carson Plaza Retirement Community for our Hawaiian Luau. There will be plenty of fun & food prepared by Chef Leo.

— Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 week session or $45 drop ins.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Carson Mall Wine Walk. 2 to 6 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Come sip and shop at the Carson Mall! New walkers $10, returning walkers $5. You will receive a wine glass which is yours to keep! Stores will have wine for you to taste while you browse the mall. 21 and over, ID's will be checked. For more information call 775-671-8150.

— Youth Theatre Carson City to hold workshop, auditions for 'Shrek: The Musical Jr.' 4 to 6 p.m. at the Western Nevada Performing Arts Center. Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce auditions for "Shrek: The Musical, Jr." The show will run eight performances, January 17-26, 2020 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center. We are looking for actors, singers, and dancers grades K-12, who will be cast to play a host of colorful fractured fairytale characters! It’s a “big bright beautiful world” as everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek, Jr. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

— Annual Historical Society's Ice Cream Social and Cool Jazz at Foreman-Roberts. 5 to 7 p.m. at 1207 N. Carson Street. The annual Carson City Historical Society Ice Cream Social is Saturday, August 10, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foreman-Roberts House Museum Park, 1207 N. Carson Street, Carson City. Free entertainment will be provided by the Millennium Bugs. Enjoy ice cream with toppings or a root beer float for only $3 each. Bring a chair, use one of ours, or bring a blanket and sit on the grass to enjoy the evenings entertainment.

— Toast of the Canyon Train in Virginia City. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Journey into the Carson River Canyon on an intimate experience, perfect for date night. Enjoy white wine and appetizers as you travel on a 45-minute trip south of Carson City’s Eastgate Depot. The ride is filled with scenic views of the Carson River and the canyon walls as they echo the sounds of the train whistle. The experience is complete when the “Iron Horse” steams by the passenger cars to reattach to the train to pull it back up out of the canyon.

— Reach for the Stars Gala. 6 to 11:30 p.m. at Western Nevada College. Please join us for a beautiful evening under the stars at our fourth annual Reach For The Stars Gala, a black tie optional event in support of STEM programs at Western Nevada College (WNC). Enjoy a full dinner hosted by Gather and an open bar, staffed by our local celebrity STARtenders, before you dance the night away to live music and watch some spectacular entertainment.

— Levitt AMP Carson City outdoor concert hosts acclaimed Tahoe band Dead Winter Carpenters. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center’s Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater. The Dead Winter Carpenters come from North Lake Tahoe, California and have created a reputation for “pouring their heart and soul” out on the stage. They are trying to redefine string music for a youthful generation of listeners; their progressive nature and sound comes from the use of plugged and unplugged instruments, a blending of refined musical ability and ‘letting it all hang out,’ with a strong sense of ambition. They are reminiscent of genre-benders like Jack White, Chris Thile and Sam Bush and, like these artists, connect with their fans in ways that sell out their show.

— Saturday Night Star Party. 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Western Nevada College. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. Mike Thomas lectures 2nd Saturdays and Dr. Tom Herring lectures on 4th Saturdays.

— Canyon White at the Canvas Cafe. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Canyon White is at The Canvas Cafe every Sunday 9 a.m. to Noon so come on up and start your day right with some yummy breakfast and Canyon White!

— Muscle Powered Sunday Morning Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd. Meet at Fremont Elementary School in the South parking lot next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Typically, this ride consists of two 10-15 minute loops with varying pace depending on rider level. This is a “no drop” ride so no one will be left behind. All riders must have a bicycle in safe working condition, a helmet, and closed toed shoes. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

— Park History Walk at Mormon Station Park. 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Join a park ranger for a talk on the early settlement and development of Mormon Station, and what life was like for the early settlers that called this place home. This talk will focus on the 1850’s, and discuss how Mormon Station grew from a remote trading station to a bustling community over the span of a few years.

— Mills Park Train Rides. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson City Railroad Association (CCRA) maintains and operates Carson City’s only Narrow Gauge Railroad and Model Railroad Club. The narrow gauge railroad is approximately 1.5 miles long and runs throughout Mills Park, with a duration of about 10 minutes. The two indoor model railroads are a HO and N gauge railroad, located in the CCRA train station at the east end of the park. Train rides are $2 per passenger, and free for children under 2 years old.

— Sushi and Sake class at Sierra Chef. 1 to 3 p.m. 2292 Main Street Suites 3 and 4 in Genoa. Join us for a cooking class on Sunday, Aug. 11 at the Sierra Chef Kitchen.

— History talk at Mormon Station Park. 2 to 2:30 p.m. Join a Park Ranger for a history talk focusing on the Pony Express’ operations in Nevada! We will discuss the difficulties of the route riders took, the numerous Pony Express stations located throughout the Silver State, famous rides across the state, and ruins that can still be seen today.

— Third annual summer event for Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada hosted in Genoa. 4 p.m. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada hosts the third annual Summer Soiree fundraiser to help build a clubhouse for Carson Valley members, Sunday, Aug. 11, at 4 p.m. in Genoa. Currently, the Club activities are hosted at Pau Wa Lu Middle School, but due to school events and availability of classrooms, there are many limitations to what the Club can provide to the youth of Carson Valley without having its own location.

— Jazz and Beyond: Retro Radio Dolls and Urban Renewal Project. 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Capital Amphitheater, 395 S. Carson Street. — Genoa Concert on the Green. 5 to 7 p.m. at Genoa Town Park, 2285 Genoa St. Authentic, original, classic rock & blues. We are the Apothic Band — Playing a unique mix of powerful and vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements crossing blues, R&B, contemporary country and Americana.

— Art Outside: Sunset Photo Hike. 6 to 9 p.m. at Silver Saddle Ranch, 4901 Carson River Rd. Calling all creative adventurers! Join the Parks, Rec & Open Space Dept. on the first Interpretive Program devoted to nature photography! All skill levels are welcome as we hike the Dead Truck Canyon trail and learn different techniques to capture the beauty of Prison Hill at sunset. Feel free to bring a phone, a digital camera, or film! And please make sure to wear close-toed shoes and bring plenty of water & sun protection. Register online. See you there!

— Pajama Storytime at the Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.
