As we head into the final Monday of 2019, we're looking at a slight chance of light snow in the morning as a weak weather system brushes the region. Events around the Carson City area include a driver's education class offered through Western Nevada College Continuing Education, a luncheon featuring Patricia Ackerman, a Democratic primary candidate for Nevada's 2nd Congressional District, art activities and more.

Hello Carson City and happy day after Christmas. It has been a truly wonderful holiday season experience and it's not over yet. We celebrate our community for its many, many charitable functions and its generosity in the spirit of Christmas and giving. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

It was gathering for the books and the sky. The Carson City Library concluded its Summer Learning Challenge on Saturday by throwing a party. The get-together celebrated youth participating in library activities that focused on space and science themes throughout summer.

The Carson City Library is gearing up for back to school with an end of summer party on Saturday, August 10. Youth participating in library activities this summer as part of the Summer Learning Challenge are encouraged to dress up as their favorite sci-fi character and join staff to wrap up the summer devoted to space and science themes.

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need Superheroes. We’ve heard a million times that kids are sponges, absorbing all that they see and hear. That includes the good, the bad and the ugly. It makes sense that they want to imitate one of the good guys in a show or cartoon. To a child, a superhero is magical. A superhero is powerful! A superhero can help keep them safe.

In an era where longevity on a job might be five years — or in the case of Millennials — two years, it’s uncommon to find employees sticking with a private-sector job for over 36 years. You might expect longevity in the public sector because of the retirement carrot, but in the private industry, job hopping is the norm.

The Carson City Library hosted its kick-off party Saturday to launch its Summer Learning Challenge with a space-oriented theme, designed to encourage people of all ages to read over the summer.

With the weather reaching the mid-80s, now is the perfect time to get out and explore during a jam-packed three days around the Carson City region. Friday has plenty of events to get you to the weekend.

This year’s Summer Learning Challenge at the Carson City Library is shaping up to be out of this world.
“Our theme this year is A Universe of Stories,” said Maria Klesta, the library’s creative learning manager. “Every Summer Learning Challenge event will be space-oriented. We have some great events lined up, which can be found on the Carson City Library website.”

Every child needs a hero, but abused children need superheroes! Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will hold information hours on Thursday, May 9 and again Thursday, May 16 in Carson City.

Come get your questions answered first and then hang out afterward as new volunteer training will begin. See first hand how the organization works. Both meetings begin at 5 p.m.

CASA of Carson City is looking to expand its volunteer base. There are thousands of children in the State of Nevada residing in foster care currently. These children have been removed from their homes, their friends and they need a strong advocate to stand up for them and express their wishes.

Driver Education
In this classroom only course new drivers can prepare for the challenges of driving (and driver license testing) in the Western Nevada College Driver Education Program. The non-credit course meets four days for 30 hours of classroom training; Students must be at least 15 years of age on the last day of class to be eligible to take the course. The WNC Driver Education Program meets the training requirements to obtain a Nevada driver’s license.

CASA OF Carson City will begin new training for CASA volunteers Thursday, April 13, 6 to 9 p.m. at the CASA office in the Family Court Complex, 1539 E. Fifth St in Carson City. To access the office, drive to the back of the parking lot where a large CASA sign will be on the door.
