Lately, coins minted in Carson City 130 or more years ago have brought record prices. An 1870-CC $20 gold piece, for example, fetched $1.62 million in November 2021.

Rusty Goe’s new three-volume set titled The Confident Carson City Coin Collector spotlights Nevada’s legendary Carson City Mint during its coinmaking years between 1870 and 1893. Goe says many people through many decades have known about the Carson City Mint’s Comstock Lode connection.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will showcase an early 20th century gown on Jan. 20, as well as historic Coin Press No. 1 on Saturday, Jan. 16.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City offers a slate of in-person and online programs in January, ranging from online family projects to historical lectures. The offerings fall under four different programs: Family Fun Saturday and the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series, both occurring online, as well as Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations and Curator’s Corner programming, both available in-person at the museum. To honor and raise funds for Nevada’s health care workers, historic Coin Press No. 1 will mint a special medallion from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 19 and 26 at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City.

The first of its kind Lake Tahoe Commemorative Coin was minted this month on historic Carson City Mint Press No. 1 and less than 300 of the limited-edition coins are still available for the public, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, said Tuesday.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will reopen Wednesday; visitors will be able to learn about pine trees during the Curator’s Corner presentations from 1 to 3 p.m. Additionally, the museum this Saturday will resume its weekly demonstrations of historic Coin Press No. 1, minting a special medallion honoring Nevada’s health care heroes.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. A Thanksgiving Turkey Drop for families in need will be held Friday at Max Casino. The Nevada State Museum, Carson City, raised $4,625 for the COVID-19 Relief Fund during its Oct. 30 minting of special medallions on historic Coin Press No. 1, and will continue fundraising efforts through Dec. 31, 2020.

A special medallion honoring the Old West Pony Express mail route will be stamped on historical Coin Press No. 1 on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. Medallions will be minted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Special medallions commemorating the historical Coach 17 train car will be minted on Coin Press No. 1 at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Coach 17 is the rail car that was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, when the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed. It is part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s collection.

Historical Coin Press No. 1 inside the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, will be minting a special medallion commemorating Abraham Curry, the first superintendent of the Carson City Mint.

Heading into the July 4 holiday weekend, there’s a number of activities around the Carson City region to celebrate. New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing.

Coin Press No. 1, which stamped coins at the Carson City Mint from 1870 to 1893, will operate from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 4 at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. This will be the first time the museum has operated Coin Press No. 1 since it closed temporarily in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coins from the Carson City Mint are rare enough in any condition to be coveted by collectors, but error coins or those with flaws generally caused during the minting process — multiply both the rarity and the collectability.

CARSON CITY — The old saying that legends never die might also be said about old locomotives. Many of those iron horses, long lost to time or the scrap heap, live on through historic photographs, artwork and the hearts and minds and skillful hands of railroad buffs.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

Nothing adds to the history of a time, an event, a place or an object more than becoming a part of that history and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is making sure the history of the Carson City Mint will continue for generations to come.

As part of its celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint — Mint 150 — the museum is hosting Kids Minting Days on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9. Children 17 and younger are admitted for free and each child will receive a commemorative copper medallion memorializing the Mint’s 150th anniversary.

On Tuesday, visitors to the Nevada State Museum sat in the front row of history to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years ago, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 pressed silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.
