Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by, including the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival, Carson City Library’s End of Summer Learning Challenge, history talks at Mormon Station Park, train rides in Virginia City, a sushi cooking class at Sierra Chef on Sunday and more!

A Hawaiian Luau in August?

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s annual Luau raised 18 percent of the Club’s annual operating budget for the year, the highest amount in the event’s 25-year history. BGCWN operates five sites in Carson City and the Carson Valley, serving more than 2,600 children, with an operating budget of $2 million.

According to the calendar, summer is coming to a close but South Lake Tahoe is refusing to acknowledge it. Tahoe South will host a magnitude of events extending the season from Labor Day into October with entertainment, culinary festivals, music, outdoor recreation, competitions and a lakefront laser show.

Join us Saturday, September 1 at X Crows BBQ at 4011 Lake Tahoe Blvd for a Labor Day Luau. Hawaiian BBQ and drink specials all evening. Play some games and win some awesome prizes! Live music by Porter Haus.

It’s a very special Friday for the kids of Carson City: it’s the last day of summer vacation. Take full advantage of your free time and check out some of today’s activities. Live music at McFadden Plaza tonight features local cover band, Deception. The Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival kicks off tonight with a band in the Davis Creek Campground. The U.S. Air Force’s Jazz Ensemble performs at the Bob Boldrick Theater as part of the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Free tickets have been available at the Chamber of Commerce for a few weeks, and if any are left, their numbers will be limited.

Get ready for all things shiny, whether it be brass or chrome. You’ll find plenty of horns playing during the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival that kicks off today. Just about every event is free to the public and family friendly, so get ready for a melodic few weeks. The historic Bliss Mansion, across the street from the Governor’s Mansion, hosts the opening night Garden Party. Hot August Nights gets an early start in Virginia City with a show and shine and poker run; 400 classic cars are waxed up and ready to impress.

FRIDAY, August 3: Things to do in Carson City

As we head into the weekend, you’ll find a fair number of ways to get the party started. Happy Anniversary to Living the Good Life; they will be celebrating four years of good times with Deception rocking their outdoor stage. For something all ages, head down to McFadden Plaza for live music by Just for Fun. For those who prefer a spot on the stage, check out Open Mic night at A to Zen or karaoke at Whiskey Tavern. No membership is necessary for tonight’s Race for Life with Carson City BMX; all ages are welcome, just don’t forget your helmet.

There is more hot and smoky in store for the day, including a very real threat of thunderstorms. You may want to stick to indoor activities when the air quality is low like this. The Capital City Community Band has a free concert and ice cream social scheduled for this afternoon at the First United Methodist Church. All are welcome, and it’s hard to argue with ice cream on a day like this. If you are looking to start your own business, but still some legal guidance, you’ll find the ‘Lunch-n-Learn’ workshop at the Adams Hub extremely helpful.

The week winds down, but the happenings in Carson City are gearing up. Kids are going to have a fun time at the Carson Montessori Carnival Night. Help Relay for Life kick-off this year’s theme during their ‘Surfing for a Cure’ Luau at the Casino Fandango; you’ll have the opportunity to sign up your team, as well. No whining allowed, just fun times, at the Governor’s Mansion during tonight’s 'Let’s Wine Together' silent auction and wine fundraiser for the Carson High Band program.

The 24th annual Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada Luau, the Club’s main fundraiser of the year, collected approximately 17 percent of its overall operating costs for the organization’s Carson City and Carson Valley locations. The event featured live music, dinner and no-host bar along with both live and silent auctions.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. If you’ve never been to the annual International Camel Races, you’ve been missing out. Keep reading, there’s something for everyone on this list. Find your fun.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Mobile bidding registration for more than 130 silent auction items and tickets for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s 24th annual Luau are now available online here.

With the cancellation of the 19-year long tradition of fireworks over Labor Day in South Lake Tahoe due to budget constraints, the Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority and other local businesses have pulled together to present a full menu of things to do on the South Shore from a laser light show to concerts and a carnival.

Returning for a 24th year is the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada (BGCWN) Luau auction and barbecue to be held Saturday, Sept. 9 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Multipurpose Athletic Center (MAC) and the BGCWN main campus on Russell Way in Carson City.

A whirlwind of a weekend is on its way and you may as well get it off to an incredible start. Stop by Living the Good Life and celebrate their third anniversary with an outdoor concert featuring Soul Connection. Telegraph Square has a stage set up for the Taste of Downtown tomorrow, so the Carson High Class of ’77 is hosting a street party with Prey for Son tonight. All Carson Alums (along with everyone else) are encouraged to come say hello.

I’m sending good thoughts to those in the California fire zones: with as bad as the smoke is here, I can only imagine how bad their eyes burn. Free ice cream and a concert featuring the Capital City Community Band can be found tonight at the First United Methodist Church on King Street. You’ll find free pool, a nice beer selection, and great drinks at Remedy’s Bar on Williams Street tonight. Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery celebrates the paper and book sculptures of mother-daughter team, My Thousand Words, at a meet and greet reception tonight. Hundreds of people donned leis and Hawaiian garb Sunday for the annual Boys and Girls Club Luau at the new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center.

At Carson High School, they are appropriately named Link Crew, also known as the Boomerang Project, and they are one of the most underappreciated yet profoundly beneficial programs at CHS.

One last chance awaits to enjoy the Reno Balloon Races or Virginia City’s annual Camel Races, so don’t miss out. A remembrance ceremony will take place at the World Trade Center I-Beam Memorial in Mills Park to honor those lost fifteen years ago. Grab the whole family and a picnic for the final ‘Concert on the Green’ in the Genoa Park. The Trey Stone Trio will entertain as weekend winds to a close.

Welcome to the weekend, Carson City. Happenings, going-ons, and to-dos can be found all over. Early birds catch the Great Reno Balloon Race, while night owls can enjoy karaoke and live music. 23rd Annual Luau BBQ and Auction Benefitting the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada returns September 11, 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. This year's event is very special as it is the FIRST time it will be held at our Carson City campus. Browse the Silent Auction items showcased inside the Boys and Girls Club, enjoy a tour of our BRAND NEW William N. Pennington Teen Center, participate in some fun games, and enjoy dinner and the live auction inside the city's beautiful new MAC (Multi-Use Athletic Center.)
