Employment in Nevada increased over the month by 8,200 jobs as the state continues to recover. Jobs remain below typical levels, down 96,900 jobs since December 2019, for an annual decline of 6.8 percent according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) December 2020 economic report.

Gov. The net proceeds of mining tax is based on a 150-year-old formula written into the state constitution. Mineral extraction is taxed at between 2 and 5 percent of gross revenue, less operating costs. Last year that formula produced revenue equal to just 1.6 percent of gross proceeds.

RENO — At a special Nevada System of Higher Education meeting held Thursday, the Board of Regents announced the appointment of former Gov. Brian Sandoval as the University of Nevada, Reno’s next president. He becomes the first Hispanic and 17th president of the 146-year-old University.

Gov. Sandoval, who is currently a Distinguished Fellow of Law and Leadership at UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law among other endeavors, will begin Oct. 5, 2020 and serve a 4-year contract.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board of Directors on Wednesday approved abatements for Google (Design, LLC) in Storey County and Lithium Nevada Corp. that will result in $1.1 billion in investments and the creation of 163 permanent jobs and 5,300 construction jobs.

Carson City Mayor, attorney and Vietnam veteran Robert L. "Bob" Crowell died overnight. He was 74.

Robert L. "Bob" Crowell was a native Nevadan, born in the mining town of Tonopah and raised in Carson City. An attorney by profession, Bob was a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. He was elected Mayor of Carson City in 2008 and assumed his duties as Mayor on January 5, 2009. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Prior to being elected Mayor, Bob served 11 years on the Carson City School Board of Trustees.

CARSON CITY — USDA Rural Development Nevada State Director Phil Cowee announced Tuesday a $344,000 loan to Storey County to cover the costs of replacing water storage tanks in Virginia City, one of the last phases in $23 million worth of water and sewer improvement projects in the historic mining town.
