History of Genoa's Mormon Station to be discussed by Carson City Rotarians

The Rotary Club of Carson City will discuss the history and early settlement of the Mormon Station in Genoa at its next meeting. Park interpreter Chris Johnson is the guest speaker, his presentation will focus on the development of Mormon Station and what life was like for early settlers.

LDS Dems take center stage at Monday's Democratic luncheon

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Eric Biggart, Chair of LDS Democrats of America. The group, which is not affiliated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has as its slogan, "Same faith. Same values. Different perspective." Their mission, as laid out on their Facebook page, is to “promote the full participation of Latter-day Saints in the Democratic Party. We do this by providing educational and social resources to progressive, moderate, and conservative Democrats who are also LDS, and others who are interested in participating in a ‘no shouting’ environment.”

Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe event celebrates 20 years

The 20th Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns once again to the Sierra on Saturday, March 7 at 9:00 am, at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake Tahoe.

Snow or no snow, event activities begin with a guided tour starting at 9:30 am with Norwegian native and longboard ski expert Nina MacLeod, who will also give a longboard ski demonstration if sufficient snow is present. Attendees should bring their own snowshoes and cross country skis.

Chautauqua characters Snowshoe Thompson, Lillian Virgin and Anna Harris return to Genoa, Nev., on Saturday, Nov. 23 5 p.m., at the Genoa Town Hall.

This Chautauqua event features Genoa residents of the past. Chautauquans include Steve Hale as Snowshoe Thompson, the legendary “Mailman of the Sierra”, Kim Harris as Lillian Virgin, the originator of the Genoa Candy Dance and DebiLynn Smith as Anna Harris, early Genoa pioneer business owner.

Five Questions for Jennifer Mahe of the Nevada Day Treasure Hunt

The Nevada Day Treasure Hunt has been going strong for nearly 20 years in the capital city, and for this installment of 5 Questions we spoke with Jennifer Mahe, one of the current organizers of the Hunt.

The Hunt has become an honorary Nevada Day tradition for Carson City and the surrounding areas, during which clues are released to the community with the goal of finding the mysterious Treasure Hunt medallion before the other hunters. From Mormon Station to Rancho San Rafael to the Nevada State Museum, you'll never know where the end of the hunt will be, but searching is half the fun!
