Senator Square: Destination unknown is theme of Carson High School's 2021 Winterfest

Students from all four classes recently nominated Carson High School Winterfest candidates for 2021 Winterfest week, Feb. 1-5, where both a King and Queen will be crowned. The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

Hello fellow anglers! As we welcomed in 2021, many anglers ascended on Topaz Lake to bring in the new year. I and fellow angler Tom Blotter were amongst the many.

At 6 a.m. Tom and I were on the lake waiting for the official start time. There was an eerie fog-like mist lingering over the lake. It was a cool 18 degrees, and the winds were calm. Our first line went into the water at 6:33 a.m. and the first strike came at 7 a.m.

Three arrested Saturday during BLM march in Carson City

Three people were arrested Saturday during a Black Lives Matter march at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City, according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The V&T Railroad played an important role in Nevada's suffrage history. It delivered VIP eastern suffragists to Carson City to discuss suffrage with Governor Boyle in 1916, and it ferried ardent Nevada suffragists from Reno to Carson City to participate in Governor Boyle's signing of our nations 19th Suffrage Amendment ratification on February 7, 1920.

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? For that matter, how many adults say they are going to write a book one day, paint like Michelangelo, or seek discomfort, my own personal new year’s resolution, by learning something new, performing selfless endeavors, or fulfilling an item on their bucket list?
