Despite concerns of civil unrest to coincide with the inauguration of a new president Wednesday morning, downtown Carson City was quiet as Joe Biden was sworn into office.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Graduates of the Carson City Chamber Leadership classes volunteered their time Saturday to assist the state grounds crew in installing Christmas lights and decorations in front of the capitol.

Celebrating Nevada Day in safety and style, the successful statewide socially distanced pop-up performances concluded in Reno and Carson City with multiple stops. The activation, designed to inspire the community to download and adopt the COVID Trace contact tracing app, resulted in five times the usual daily downloads indicating the community is motivated to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will get underway at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, for Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, by executive order, Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell, whose memorial is being held Thursday.

With Nevada Day festivities rolling this week without the coveted official parade along Carson Street, some have noted on social media their intention to rally their own independent parades.

While not illegal or encouraged, the Carson City Sheriff's Office is staffed up to make sure that whoever chooses to do anything non-sanctioned, including independent parading on Carson Street, that whatever they choose to do is done without breaking the law.

Chase will open its first Carson City branch bank Tuesday on South Carson Street and Eagle Station as part of its northern Nevada expansion, making it the 10th location in the region.

Each October, Nevadans turn their attention to the state capitol, Carson City, home of the “official” Nevada Day Parade. Since 1938, the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City has been an annual coming together to celebrate Nevada’s heritage and the founding of this great state on October 31, 1864.

Heading into the weeknd, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area. Lions Club kicks off its annual “White Cane Days” Saturday and Sunday in Carson City to increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need. Local business Wizard of Pawz grooming salon hosts a socially-distanced grand opening on Saturday afternoon, followed by a pool tournament at Bulldog Billiards at 6 p.m. Combined with live music and karaoke, the state capitol will be packed with excitement! Carson High School’s Homecoming Court was honored at the State Capitol grounds Monday evening. Thanks and appreciation to Carson Blue Thunder Bands and CHS Cheer.

Two Carson City women and a South Lake Tahoe man were arrested and booked Saturday for misdemeanor suspicion of obstructing and being a pedestrian in the roadway during a Black Lives Matter demonstration near the capitol building.

Three people were arrested Saturday during a Black Lives Matter march at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City, according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The demonstrators were arrested following an issue with protesters walking in the bike lane.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Western Nevada College will host a memorial exhibit and informational presentation on the 9-11 attacks on Friday. Partnership Carson City will team up for a statewide suicide prevention virtual walk this Saturday. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak will hold a press conference today, Monday, at 5 p.m. to provide an update on Nevada’s COVID-19 response efforts. The press conference will be inside the Old Assembly Chamber of the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City.

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, Independence Day, I was on the Nevada State Capitol Grounds in Carson City. This is where I was the target of a hostile verbal assault: “Get out of here! You don’t belong here! You’re not welcome here!”

A Seattle area high school student will pass through Carson City today, Wednesday, and will be at the state capitol building to display a quilt he designed to raise awareness of COVID-19.

The AYSO Carson City Youth Soccer Region 140 organization is bringing excitement back to the state capitol.

Registration for the upcoming fall season is open for kids ages 3-18. Early bird registration ends July 15 and can be made online or in-person at Yogurt Beach, located at 3228 N. Carson St. in Carson City. In-person registration will be held Wednesday, July 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Thursday morning, the Douglas County Commissioners, along with a loud procession of supporters, travelled to Carson City to deliver, in unison, a letter asking the state to allow Douglas County to reopen.

Carson City was a 19th century hub for mining, transportation and more. It was the place where a young Samuel Clemens began his literary career, and where his nom de plume Mark Twain was first revealed. Carson City was as Old West as they came.

Each year, CVS employees volunteer thousands of hours to nonprofit organizations in their communities. Joanne Dwyer, Director of the CVS Health Foundation, states that the CVS Health Foundation awards grants which supports these efforts and provides additional financial support to the causes supported by CVS employees. Grants, which range from $500 to $5,000, are awarded directly to the organization on the CVS employee’s behalf.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Nevada state agencies participated in the Toys for Tots 2019 drive. Toys were donated at state buildings and agencies, then delivered to the State Capitol in Carson City for a final pick-up Tuesday by Santa, joined by Joyce Buckingham, Toys for Tots Executive Director for Carson City, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties.
