The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Donna Inversin, a member of the Carson City Open Space Advisory Committee since 2011. She has been a Muscle Powered board member since 2007, and in the years since has served as the group's president, secretary, treasurer, walk leader and trash mob organizer. The Muscle Powered organization works toward a community where walking and biking, for transportation or recreation, is a way of life. They promote creation of pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly infrastructure by developing and maintaining trails and resources.

The ladies' Muscle Powered mountain bike rides return, just in time for Bike Month. Meet at Tuesday, May 3, 5:30 p.m. at Foothill Drive off Winnie Lane (39.178859, -119.788133) in Carson City. We'll bag trash for pickup at 2. Remember to dress for the weather; we'll have work gloves, but bring your own if you like. See you there!

Beat the heat and get the legs moving with a morning walk on Monday, July 12, 7 a.m. Route will go from the dirt parking lot at Van Patten and Murphy Dr. (behind Western Nevada College) on flat terrain past sage and bitterbrush into the adjoining neighborhood.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Muscle Powered, an award-winning nonprofit that has dedicated itself to safe walking, biking and hiking in Carson City for more than 20 years, is seeking the community's support this #GivingTuesday for its Connect Nevada Trails project.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will get underway at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, for Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, by executive order, Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell, whose memorial is being held Thursday.

While the seat for Ward 2 will be filled following the election on Nov. 4, another seat is open and will be filled by appointment.

The seat for Ward 3 is currently held by Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who will be vacating now that she has been elected Carson City’s mayor.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region. The Dayton Chamber’s 27th annual “Making A Difference” Golf Tournament arrives Friday. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Bike Month has always been a cornerstone for Muscle Powered to bring community together every May to share our love of biking. Back in March, as we began to watch the COVID-19 outbreak unfurl in the United States, we held out hope that we could still come together to celebrate as usual.

You might have heard that Carson City is now a Bee City. But what does that mean, how did it happen, and how can you help?

What happened is that a small group of committed beekeepers decided to approach the city with the idea, and then worked tirelessly for two years with Carson City Board of Supervisors and Mayor Bob Crowell to develop an organization committed to protecting pollinator habitat within the city boundaries.

Plenty of activities around Carson City are returning for all to enjoy throughout the summer. From hiking and biking trails and campgrounds, to several outdoor recreational activities, there are many ways to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

Like you, we at Muscle Powered here in Carson City love getting outside, and are saddened that we must temporarily suspend all group events until further notice in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Heading into Thursday, happenings lined up include a monthly meeting of the Carson City Native and Newcomers, a preserving history workshop through the Nevada State Archives, trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, an introduction into improv comedy at the Brewery Arts Center, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and more. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk takes place Saturday followed by a performance from Tom Petty and Rod Stewart tribute bands during The Do Drop In’s “A Face in the Crowd” homeless fundraiser at Fuji Park. St. Teresa School will host its 17th annual Crab Feed Fundraiser. Combined with comedy at the Carson Nugget and Brewery Arts Center, the Carson City region is in store for a busy weekend. The thaw continues around the capital city as we head into Tuesday with highs expected in the mid-50s. Events lined up feature morning and evening walks hosted by Muscle Powered, Carson City TRIAD will give a presentation at the senior center on scams targeting older adults. Also on tap, the Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents a Jimmy Stewart favorite "You Can't Take it With You" at the BAC; if you love music, there's Big-Band Jazz X2 at the Carson City Community Center, and you can join Carson Now as it celebrates its 10th anniversary at Living the Good Life.
