I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Dec. 9 - 10

The Carson City area is awash in entertainment, shopping, and family-friendly options this weekend. Santa Claus is popping up all over, including at Benson Feed for the annual CASI Pet Photos with St. Nick and aboard the train at our Railroad Museum’s Santa Train. The musical ‘Honk, Jr’ for the young ones and Love/Sick for the older crowd are on the stage at the Brewery Arts Center. Spend the day at the Silver Saddle Ranch: their annual Holiday Open House is the perfect time to explore their trails and learn more about the working ranch’s preservation. Read on and discover what this weekend can offer you.

SATURDAY:

  • — Breakfast and Bowling at Carson Lanes (breakfast served 7:30am -11am, unlimited bowling 9am-12pm; $13, $8 kids 8 and younger)
  • Run With Rudolph 5K or 10K - Annual Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series presented by Ascent Runs: begins at Western Nevada College - head south toward the baseball field and then down to the lower lot. Look for blue truck and pop-ups (race begins 9am; same-day registration $25, students $15 - cash or card only; Every participant must check-in prior to the start of the run to confirm presence, bib# and distance running; Walkers are welcome; There are no aid stations out on the course, so be prepared to carry your own water or sports drink)
  • Holiday with a Hero Fundraiser at Betsy’s Big Kitchen inside SlotWorld (8am-8pm, breakfast, lunch, and dinner; all of the day’s proceeds will go to the Holiday with a Hero Program)
  • — Coffee and Donuts with Experimental Aircraft Association, Sierra Chapter 403 at 2500 E. College Pkwy (8am-12pm, all welcome)
  • Annual Holiday Open House at the Silver Saddle Ranch, off Carson River Rd. Holiday Crafts at the Nevada State Museum is part of today’s Family Fun Saturday event. Kids can also use some creativity at the Craft Booth in the Carson Mall’s Craft Fair where they can make holiday presents for seniors, veterans, and our oversea military.

The annual Road to Bethlehem Drive-Through Living Nativity at the downtown Methodist Church draws spectators from all over. It’s easy for the roads around Division and King Street to get a little crowded, so take an alternate route if you aren’t headed to the church.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

UPDATE THURSDAY: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the two people who died Wednesday morning following the two vehicle crash on I-580 in Carson City. They are Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra, 36, and Viola Santoyo Huizar, 48, both of Carson City.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.
