This year the Carson Nugget in Carson City will celebrate its 63rd annual Community Thanksgiving Feast on Thursday, Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are welcome to join us in the Grand Ballroom. All guests will receive a free 8-inch turkey sandwich, stuffing, cranberry sauce and more.

This Friday, May 22 at 4 p.m. Casino Fandango’s award-winning Duke’s Steak House in Carson City will reopen to the public. As part of phase one reopening, the Nevada State Gaming Control Board is allowing restaurants inside casinos to open provided certain industry-specific criteria are met; Duke’s will be one of the first to reopen in Northern Nevada.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. The Casino Fandango has opened its new “Craft 55” bar, which is dedicated to craft beers and a pub-style menu with a few unique twists, including Duck Wings served with blue cheese dressing and celery sticks, bangers and mash, and chipotle shrimp cocktail, along with traditional pub fare such as sliders, bacon mac and cheese, buffalo chicken wings and more.

Heading into midweek, the weather is expected to make an abrupt change with snow showers possible down to the valley floor late Wednesday night into Thursday. Activities include the New Year's Show featured by the Nevada Artists Association, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, the "School of Rock, Senior Years" presentation at the Brewery Arts Center, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at Carson City Library and more.

Going into Tuesday around the capital city we'll see partly sunny skies with highs in the low 50s. There's a slight chance of snow showers later in the evening but nothing significant. Activities around town include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, "School of Rock, Senior Years" at the Brewery Arts Center, exhibits, showings, Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents "Captain Blood" at the BAC Performance Hall, dance and exercise classes at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

With almost 15 percent of the population of Carson City being at least 65 years of age or older, the Brewery Arts Center announces its newest project geared towards that sector, School of Rock: Senior Years.

This exciting new program will begin in January of 2020 and BAC will train, house and facilitate a choir who will learn and perform rock, pop, hip-hop and surf music comprised entirely of people over the age of 65. The choir will meet in our beautiful Grand Ballroom under the direction of James Rossi.

The 2020 Denim and Diamonds fundraiser is set for Saturday, Feb. 29 at Casino Fandango's Grand Ballroom in Carson City. All proceeds benefit Austin's House, our local non-profit children's shelter. The shelter cares for children ages infant to 18 who have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse.

This year's gala event features a fabulous dinner, silent and live auctions, and dancing to the music of DJ Steven ROCKS. Tickets are available for $65 or $125.

Even though valley rain and Sierra snow happen this time of year, we're in for a brief change after going weeks without any precipitation. Enjoy the changeup. Daniel Leif Braafladt died peacefully in Carson City, Nevada on Nov. 7, 2019 at the age of 62. Dan is survived by his wife Toni, his daughter Lacy, his grandkids Emmett and Reta, and his dog Bear.

He was born in Carmichael, CA to Jeane and Phil Braafladt. Dan spent a lifetime being the best type of man there is. He could fix anything. His spirit and jolly laugh made any occasion better. His love and respect for wildlife and nature were admirable. He was an avid hunter, sports lover, and was a pretty darn good shot. His wisdom, love, and long garage talks will be missed by so many.

Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. Stop by, bring a turkey and give a local family in need a happy Thanksgiving. While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect highs near 70. Local events Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 include an Eagle Valley Middle School expansion plan community meeting, "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a Little Valley fire re-seeding gathering, a Toys for Tots volunteer orientation meeting, art showings, classes and more.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Veteran's Day is Monday, Nov. 11 with a number of events happening around the capital city and Northern Nevada which began this week and will continue through Tuesday.
