What a week it was Carson City, and it isn't even over yet. Heading into Friday, May 3, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s. There's a host of activities Friday and, looking ahead, a bevy of fun Saturday including a Mother's Day craft fair at the Carson City Community Center, a Star Wars themed bicycle safety day, a wine, cheese and dessert ride aboard the V&T, an early opening of the downtown farmer's market, the May Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, a memorial walk, presentations, comedy, live music and more. — Friday Morning Walk to John Mankins Park-East hosted by Muscle Powered. 9 a.m. Join Muscle Powered for its weekly Friday one hour walks to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at 3051 Oak Ridge Drive and West College Parkway. Dirt trail. Water and closed-toe shoes required. All walks are 1 to 2 miles with duration of 1 hour with usually negligible elevation gain, and frequently on paved or smooth paths. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. — Ready 2 Run: Australian Shepherd Agility Trials at Fuji Park. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ready 2 Run Agility Club, founded in 2001 by agility enthusiasts in Northern Nevada, promotes the sport of agility by staging agility trials, and contributes to charitable organizations that support the health and well-being of dogs. — Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Join Carson City Library to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. — Weekly Open Mic Night at the Zen Den in A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 p.m. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Open Mic Night happens every Friday from 6-9 p.m. A to Zen is located at 1803 N Carson St., Carson City. On Saturday, local artist Kingwhistler plays his first solo show in Carson City at "The Zen Den." Inspired by the natural beauty of the West, Kingwhistler's music is a mix of classic rock, Americana and folk. Frontman and singer-songwriter, Nick Aliberti has played to rave reviews at some of the most iconic music venues in New York and LA including The Viper Room, Hotel Cafe, CBGB, and The House of Blues.

— Evening of Improv Comedy at the Brewery Arts Center. 7 to 9 p.m. Join the Brewery Arts Center for an evening of improv comedy where you never know what to expect, except a good time! Suggested donation of $5 at the door. The BAC is located at 449 West King Street, Carson City.

— Consort Canzona Presents 'Hassler & Company' Concerts at Shepherd of the Sierra. 7 p.m. Consort Canzona, a select group of instrumentalists and singers specializing in early music, will present two Hassler & Company concerts this spring on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m., and Saturday, May 4, at 4 p.m., at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395 (just south of Best Buy) in Carson City. Director is Gary Schwartz. Admission is free, donations welcome. The concert is named for Hans Leo Hassler, a German composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras. The program includes the motet, Dixit Maria, by Hassler and selections from the Missa Super Dixit Maria, a "parody mass" based on the motet, and three other short works by Hassler. The program also includes short instrumental works by Melchior Franck, Henry Purcell, Josquin des Prez, Johann Hermann Schein, Michel-Richard Delalande, Georg Phillipp Telemann, and others. Consort Canzona instruments are various sized recorders, harpsichord, and cello. Consort Canzona is a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, supported in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

— The Carson Comedy Club Presents Comedian Sal Calanni. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Carson Nugget. Sal is a lactose intolerant Italian originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he hit the road and began doing stand up in San Francisco. He has crawled through the ranks and has appeared at clubs all over the U.S. He now lives in Hollywood.
Sal was on this past season of Gotham Comedy Live, he acted in NBC's Trauma, and Spike Lee's film in NBA2K16. He starred in, co-wrote, and co-produced the film, Lucifer's Crewcut starring Maria Bamford, Arj Barker, Jello Biafra, and GWAR. He has opened for Dave Chappelle, Dave Attell, Bill Burr, John Caparulo, Iliza Shlesinger, Greg Giraldo and many more. He has been featured on the Funny or Die homepage and has performed at the Oddball Comedy Festival, SF Sketchfest, and the Bumbershoot Film Festival. Here's what's happening Saturday:

— May the Fourth be with You: Bicycle Fun and Safety Day. 9 a.m. to noon at Fritsch Elementary School. This Bicycle Fun & Safety Day will benefit the Carson City Schools Foundation. Sponsored by Carson Tahoe Health and hosted by the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation, Safe Routes to School, local bike clubs and shops, the inaugural event will serve as a proving ground to acquaint experienced and less experienced bike riders with their eco-friendly transport mechanisms. The event will offer a bicycle safety rodeo — with many fun and informative bicycle challenges, bike safety checks and roadworthiness inspections, guided fun rides and free helmets to the first 300 participants who need them. Also, it’s an official unofficial intergalactic holiday, May the Fourth. Known as "Star Wars Day," the fan blowout is a pun play on the saga's iconic "May the Force be with you" line, which has pretty much served as a mantra, battle cry for diehards since George Lucas introduced it in 1977. On this day in Carson City, however, instead of blowing up the Death Star or waging an attack on Starkiller Base to save countless planets from destruction, concourses of adolescent Rebel Troops and young Jedi will marshal their forces on two-wheeled “Tauntauns” for guided fun rides and a bicycle safety rodeo. There will also be a “May The Fourth Ride With You” costume contest for individuals who dress themselves or their bicycles in a Star Wars theme. However, for safety purposes, event organizers strongly recommend bike riders make conscience considerations in their attire. Masks should never be worn while riding a bike, and any loose or dangling clothing material is discouraged as it poses significant risk of being tangled in the chain. Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4. All participants must sign a waiver form to attend the event. Go here for the form. Families are encouraged to print and fill out the waiver prior to arrival at Fritsch Elementary School. Event organizers are encouraging a $5 per person or $20 per family donation be made to benefit the Carson City Schools Foundation. Pre-payment is available at CCSchoolsfoundation.org by going here. Any business or organization that would like to register as a vendor and have a dedicated space to set up a booth at the event, will need to provide a raffle prize or $50 registration fee. All riders under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the waiver form and remain at the event. Any riders under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the ride(s).

— Early Farmers Market. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Early Farmers Market will be opening Saturday, May 4 and running all month until May 25 in the Parking Lot behind Due Sorella, Two Sisters. Come and Visit Our Vendors to Get Your Spring Produce. Due Sorella (fondly known as Two Sisters) is located at 202 N Curry St, Carson City.

— Fungus Foray: Carson City Parks and Rec hosts interpretive wild mushroom hike. 9 a.m. Calling all fungi enthusiasts! Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is going to be looking for wild mushrooms behind the Foothill Garden, behind the Carson-Tahoe Health Cancer Center in the 1500 block of Medical Parkway, with the help of the garden site manager, Will Pierz. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Go here to register.

— Poison hemlock removal at Fuji Park in Carson City. 9 to 11 a.m. Join the Carson City Weed Coalition to hand-pull the noxious weed poison hemlock at Fuji Park. The event is Saturday, May 4, 9 to 11 a.m. Please wear long pants, sleeves, a hat, and closed toed shoes. Poison hemlock can cause skin irritation, but is not poisonous unless ingested. Fuji Park is located at 601 Old Clear Creek Road in south Carson City. Those who want to participate should park at the Fuji Park Exhibit Center.

— Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans (VARN) host free Legal Aid Fair. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (VARN) will host a free Legal Aid Fair on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Douglas County Community Center.

— All Aboard: Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary to host annual V&T Wine, Cheese and Dessert Train. 10 a.m. The Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary, in one of its most popular fundraisers, will host its 6th annual V&T Wine, Cheese and Dessert Train from Carson City to Virginia City on Saturday, May 4, 2019. The special event train leaves the Eastgate Depot in Carson City at 10 a.m. and arrives in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m. The train arrives back in Carson City before 4:30 p.m. Tickets are pre-sold, and guests are asked to be at the Eastgate Depot by 9:30 a.m.
Wine and cheese will be served on the trip to Virginia City. Be sure to bring a camera for the scenery is fantastic and there is a good chance that passengers will spot wildlife along the route including bands of wild horses. Ticket price is $70. To purchase tickets, call fundraising chairman Gloria Seaton at 775-882-8162. CTA Fundraisers are used to benefit patient care at the Carson Tahoe Hospital. Funds are used to purchase items and or equipment to make patients’ stay more comfortable. Examples are the purchasing of a tram that transports patients and their families to and from the parking lot, infusion pumps for the cancer center, wheelchairs and much more. CTA also provides scholarships to nursing students at Western Nevada Community College and to nurses at the hospital.

— Mother's Day Craft Fair at the Carson City Community Center. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Find mom the perfect gift for Mother's Day. — Second Wind Thrift Store Celebrates Grand Re-Opening. 10 a.m. Second Wind Thrift Store is celebrating their grand re-opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and special comments from Mayor Bob Crowell on Saturday, May 4, at 10 a.m. Second Wind Thrift Store is located near the Carson City Senior Center, 901 Beverly Drive, Carson City.
The first 100 customers will receive free hot dogs, cookies and bottled waters. All customers will receive 50 percent off their purchases of every item in the store, excluding books. Second Wind Thrift Store sells a variety of items donated by community members, including furniture, clothing, durable medical equipment, household items and more. All proceeds from the store benefit Meals on Wheels Carson City, which provides meals for approximately 300 homebound seniors and is expected to provide more than 90,000 nutritious meals in 2019.

— WNC invites community to Veterans Suicide Awareness March in Carson City. 10 a.m. Suicides among veterans are occurring at an alarming rate in this country. To bring about awareness of this appalling trend Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center annually holds a Veterans Suicide Awareness March. Community members are invited to participate in the fifth annual event scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4 in Carson City. Participants will walk from the corner of U.S. Highway 395 (Bully’s parking lot) and West College Parkway to the WNC campus at 2201 West College Parkway, and back, approximately 2.3 miles round trip. The event brings awareness to the ongoing reality of veteran suicide, which occurs in this country once every 80 minutes and 8,030 times per year. After arriving on campus, participants will place small American flags on the college’s front lawn to show solidarity with those who serve. Along with promoting suicide awareness, event organizers want to help people learn the signs of someone considering suicide and the resources available to help them. — Family Fun Day at Sunridge Golf and Recreations. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunridge Golf and Recreations is having a grand reopening party on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We would like to welcome the community to join us at the course for a family-friendly day of fun. Come check out all of the work we've been doing over the winter including our clubhouse upgrades, new 3000square foot event tent, and outdoor archery range.

— State Capitol Guided Tour. 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Guided tours by docents from the Nevada State Museum will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. 1 to 5 p.m. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss event. Held the first Saturday of every month. For just $15— ticket price supports the Downtown Business Association — you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away. Bring your wine walk glass with the Carson City Logo on it and pay only $12. You can purchase tickets at the following locations: The Carson Nugget, Cactus Jack’s, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Bella Fiore, and Touched by Angels.

— Boys and Girls Club hosts Kentucky Derby Fundraiser Saturday. The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada is set to host one of their largest fundraisers of the year this Saturday, May 4, for its 11th year. Kentucky Derby Days 2019 will kick off at the Martin Hotel and Basque Restaurant, located at 308 N. Curry Street, at 2:30 p.m. and will run until 6 p.m. All proceeds of the event will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada, located in Carson City. This is the 145th year of the Kentucky Derby, and guests should be prepared with derby attire. Mint Juleps will be served, naturally, along with catering by the Martin Hotel. Tickets to the event are $100 which includes admission, two drink tickets, and food. The larger sponsorships have all been sold, according to their website.
There will also be a raffle for two Burning Man tickets, which includes a parking pass, two cruiser bikes, and a gift certificate to Junkee Clothing in Reno. Tickets for the raffle are $100, and attendance at the event is not required to win, but encouraged. Registration and ticket sales will continue until Friday, May 3.

— Brass quintet to play at BAC's Expresso Yourself Cafe as part of Carson City wine walk. 2 to 4 p.m. Zephyrus Brass Quintet will perform in the Expresso Yourself Café at the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W King Street, Carson City, on Saturday, May 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. The live music is part of the Carson City Downtown Business Association Wine Walk, to be held that day from 1 to 5 p.m. The Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition will be pouring wine Nevada Artists Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center, one of about 30 stops along the Wine Walk route. Wine glasses for participation are available for $15 at the Brewery Arts Center and other locations. Bring your wine glass that shows the official wine walk logo and pay only $12. The music is free. Formed in 2011 as an affiliate the Carson City Symphony Association, Zephyrus musicians are Bob Masters and Alan Catron, trumpet; Lin Nelson, horn; Paul Jorgensen, trombone; and David Bugli, tuba. The group plays music from an extensive repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary popular music. They have performed for school assemblies, holiday programs, luncheons, fundraisers, wine walks, sports events, senior living facilities, and at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park and the Nevada State Museum. The ensemble’s name is derived from Zephyrus (or Zephyr), the Greek god of the west wind.

— Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

Nevada Artists Association 'Spring has Sprung' show underway at the BAC in Carson City. 10 a.m. daily except Mondays. Come on in and enjoy browsing the new art in the "Spring has Sprung" show running now through May 3 at the Nevada Artists Association Carson City gallery located in the Brewery Arts Center. The association is celebrating its 40th year as a gallery and offers a wide array of art forms for your visual enjoyment, that make for amazing gift options. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
