Carson City area weather: Snow overnight in Sierra, rain in valleys, much colder Sunday
A storm system moved into the region overnight, bringing a few inches of snow to the Sierra and rain across the lower valleys.
With some sunshine this morning, mountain passes look to be clearing some. Chains were required Saturday morning for motorists over mountain passes at Highway 50 West Spooner, Kingsbury Grade and Mt. Rose Highway. See NVroads.com for updates.
The storm was expected to produce snow accumulations up to 2 inches below 7,000 feet, and 2 and 6 inches with localized areas up to 8 inches above 7,000 feet.
Motorists should prepare for slippery road conditions, which could impact travel through Saturday morning. NDOT urges motorists to slow down and use caution while traveling.
Meanwhile, forecasters note that another part of the system will drop in shortly behind the first one and extend into Sunday morning. Some light snow showers in the mountains are possible late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The system will also introduce much colder northerly flow over the region through Sunday, with potential for lake effect or lake enhanced snow bands on the south sides of area lakes.
The system will bring an unseasonably cold day Sunday, with "temperatures even in the warmest western Nevada valleys struggling to break 50 degrees," according to NWS forecasters in the latest forecast discussion. "Increased north-northeast afternoon winds will be no help, with gusts up to 20-30 mph for valley locations and in excess of 80 mph along Sierra ridgelines into early Monday morning. Another morning of widespread hard freezes follows on Monday."
