The time has come for Chef Gilles and Tina Galhaut to retire from Z Bistro in Carson City and allow Gilles the opportunity to apply his creative energy to another part of life ⎯ not a decision that was made lightly.

A research project was recently published by the Journal of Hospital Management and Health Policy, indicating that 60 percent of Washoe County residents (and 74 percent of Washoe County non-smokers) would favor a law prohibiting smoking in all casinos in Washoe County.

Restaurants were the hardest hit of the “essential” businesses allowed to remain open when the hospitality businesses — of which restaurants are a subset — were abruptly shuttered at almost a moment’s notice.

National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches and other day-use areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin have now reopened for day-use only as of Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020. Camping and overnight stays will not be permitted, and campgrounds will remain closed. Resorts will reopen for day-use only. Emergency Fire Restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30. While all three metro areas in Nevada continued to see job gains in July, Carson City was among the best, having an increase of 800 jobs, or 2.8 percent growth since June, with the manufacturing sector climbing the most by 100 jobs or 3.8 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

When Will Truce and Jake Conway worked as high school teachers in Carson City, a colleague offered them some crystallized honey from his bee farm, and the two began experimenting with making mead, the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage brewed by fermenting honey with water and sometimes referred to as ‘honey wine.’

Tonight beginning at 6 p.m., the Carson City School Board will be voting on the re-opening plans for all schools in the Carson City School District, which is slated to open on a proposed hybrid schedule. Families are also given the option of 100 percent distance learning, but there is no option at this time for 100 percent in school learning, except for certain special education students.

The Carson City School Board will be voting on the final plan for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year and the effect COVID-19 has had on it at the board meeting this Tuesday, July 28, at 6 p.m.

The meeting, which will take place in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street, will decide on how the reopening of the new school year will go in Carson City Schools.

I am a desperate parent trying to find help. I’m a scared parent wanting to start an open & constructive conversation about our schools in the fall. My public comments have been silenced or not acknowledged. I’m not alone, I’m in the majority & we should have the choice to choose what’s right for our kids.

I think GOV SISOLAK should at least, give us, NEVADA parents & teachers, the CHOICE on whether we want our kids to return or not return to school full time. It should be OUR choice and decision.

CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada is up 98,900 jobs over the month and the unemployment rate declined from 25.3 percent in May to 15 percent in June, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s June 2020 economic report.

According to the Carson City School District Reopening Plan, there will be three distinct models the District must plan for and be prepared to operate under, and the finalized plan should be in place for at least one full semester after school begins.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 12,484 for the week ending July 4, up 1,374 claims, or 12.4 percent, compared to last week’s total of 11,110. This is the second consecutive week of increases in regular initial claims.

Through the week ending July 4, there have been 562,486 initial claims filed in 2020, 540,834 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) show initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 10,347 for the week ending June 20, down 273 claims, or 2.6 percent, compared to last week’s total of 10,620. This is the eighth consecutive week of declines in regular initial claims.

Through the week ending June 20, there have been 538,892 initial claims filed in 2020, 517,240 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is preparing to reopen after shutting down on March 16, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a reopening date has not been set. All full-service DMV offices remain closed.

Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe is reopening over the Memorial Day weekend and having a four-day locals-emphasis celebration after being closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event has been scaled back from previous years as city and state officials grapple with phase 2 reopening, which allows second-home property owners living outside the area to return to the California side of South Lake Tahoe, but not allowing for non-essential travel and visitors.

CARSON CITY — Unemployment insurance filers will continue to be afforded the work search waiver until further notice, Gov. Steve Sisolak and the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation announced Tuesday. The move aligns with current guidance from the Department of Labor.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak will provide information and a re-opening date for Nevada as part of the Phase 1, Roadmap to Recovery plan.

The Governor will make the announcement 3 p.m. Thursday, in a press conference. It will be made available at http://nvleg.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?event_id=25378&fbclid=IwAR1EVP... and local network news channels.

MINDEN — Douglas County Board of County Commissioners held a special meeting Wednesday regarding recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts to local business. The board decided unanimously to draft a letter to Nevada Gov. Sisolak in support of re-opening Douglas County and was to hand-deliver the letter Thursday morning.

Gov. Steve Sisolak says he plans to extend the state’s stay-at-home order but will begin easing restrictions on retail curbside pickup and outdoor activities after the state’s COVID-19 caseload and deaths plateau.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Education released Wednesday its Path Forward Plan – Responding to COVID-19 to support schools and districts in continuing to provide educational opportunities to all students.

Gov. Steve Sisolak will extend the state’s shutdown order to an as-yet undetermined date and close schools for the rest of the academic year, but he will allow some businesses to reopen if the state sees a consistent downward trajectory of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak will hold a 5 p.m. news conference Tuesday to provide an update on the administration's re-opening Nevada framework plan. He will be joined by a team of Nevada experts to lay out the state’s criteria to begin re-opening. The press conference will be televised and on the governor's YouTube page here.

The Assembly Republican Caucus addressed its plan Monday to reopen Nevada, proposing a framework, establishing a regional plan and a bi-partisan task force to advise on a strategy. It calls for Nevada to join the California, Oregon and Washington Western States Pact; establish a regional plan to modify Nevada’s stay at home orders and the caucus wants to immediately establish a curbside model that will allow non-essential retail businesses to open.
