Advocates to End Domestic Violence in Carson City hold ribbon cutting for new shelter facility

Advocates to End Domestic Violence, a nonprofit in Carson City offering emergency shelter and various resources for victims of domestic and sexual violence, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 30 to celebrate the soon to be open, newly constructed shelter facility for survivors in Carson City and surrounding communities.

After nearly three decades of planning, the facility will open with 40 beds for victims that will meet the anticipated annual demand of 4,000 bed-nights needed at the organization.

The new shelter incorporates sustainable elements and durable materials in the structure designed to endure northern Nevada weather while making use of energy-efficient technology like solar panels and heat pumps.

The new facility also features security enhancements including secure fencing, a gated entry, and upgraded technology to improve privacy and safety for residents. Units also incorporate decor and furniture sourced from the nonprofit’s thrift store, Classy Seconds.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen the demand for shelter services grow alongside Carson City’s population,” said Lisa Lee, executive director of AEDV. “While it’s been a long time coming, we are proud to finally introduce the community to such an efficient and well-planned facility. Its completion is a testament to the community’s belief in AEDV’s importance and we are excited to begin helping more survivors rebuild their lives in such a beautiful and welcoming space.”

Planning for the facility began when AEDV launched its thrift store 28 years ago, with funds earmarked to build for the future shelter. Despite the challenges that came with building a facility of this size and scope within the region, the new location has enabled AEDV to upgrade many of its technical systems in order to better face the needs of its clients.

Since purchasing the land, AEDV has completed three major projects: Classy Seconds Thrift Shop in 2017, an Intervention and Resource Center in 2021, and now this emergency shelter, which is designed to meet the increasing demand for services in the region. All three projects have been built in collaboration with Carson City construction firm SB Builders, LLC.

“It’s important to recognize that this completed project is made possible through the dedication and cooperation of community members and donors,” said Lee. “We’re also exceedingly grateful to the William N. Pennington Foundation, whose support and funding were integral in the shelter’s formation from a dream to a reality.” William N. Pennington was a gaming pioneer, successful entrepreneur, and one of Nevada’s leading philanthropists.
