I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Sept. 23 – 24

One might think that the end of summer means that the fun times are over: they would be wrong. This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The annual Genoa Candy Dance is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and this weekend welcomes the first ever Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park, as well. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

SATURDAY:

  • -- 16th Annual Soroptimist ‘Stroke to Help’ Golf Tournament at Silver Oak Golf Course (7:30am Check-in and breakfast, 8am shotgun start; 4-person California Scramble; $100 per person includes continental breakfast and luncheon, raffle, prizes, on-course contests, and more)
  • -- Historic Sutro Tunnel Site Tours – meet at Sutro Elementary School: 190 Dayton Village Parkway, Dayton, transportation provided to and from the Tunnel Site (Tours leave every 30 minutes from 8am-2pm; $45, $35 seniors – space limited to 15 per tour, get tickets online HERE; Guided two-hour tour onsite includes walking about 1 mile over unmaintained roads and trails and up small hills. Today has gone to the dogs, and not in a bad way. The annual CASI Pooch Plunge welcomes friendly dogs of all sizes to a pool party at the Carson Aquatic Center. Paws on the Veranda at Café’ at Adele’s encourages you to bring your favorite furry friend to breakfast, lunch, or dinner. They’ll be treated to goodies and the Carson Tahoe SPCA will enjoy a donation.

Sure, you could spend the day curled up with some hot cocoa or pumpkin-spiced something, the chilly day certainly justifies it, but the area offers plenty to lure you out of the house. Get a head start on holiday shopping at the Genoa Candy Dance or at the Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park. The Proscenium Players’ production of ‘Nightfall with Edgar Allen Poe’ can be found in the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater. An open house at the historic Wungnema House at the east edge of Mills Park is also hosting a forum for those interested in the future of our area dog parks.

In a systematic approach to improve water quality, Lyon County Utilities will be conducting water main flushing Tuesday and Wednesday, May 14-15 in the Rose Peak area (roughly between Flowery Avenue and Sheep Camp Road) in Dayton, Nev.

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Nevada State Police has identified a Northern California man who died in a fatal crash last month on I-80 in Fernley.

Carson High School will host its First Annual Art Expo, showcasing the talents of its student artists in photography, graphic design, drawing, painting and ceramics Thursday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m.

A 40-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of carrying a concealed knife without a permit, a gross misdemeanor offense, and misdemeanor disturbing the peace, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Hello fellow anglers. Depending on where you were for the opening day season, the waters were high on the rivers and some lakes still had not iced out yet. But yet the strangest thing about it was. There were about half of the expected anglers that ventured out. I noticed the campgrounds were only half full.

Check out the free Senior Health Fair from 8 am to 12 noon this Thursday, May 9 at Casino Fandango Grand Ballroom in Carson City.

More than 70 vendors, a record number, will share valuable information about their programs and services. Participate in raffle drawings, interact with service dogs, donate blood, and have quick access to important vaccines. Following a capacity community turnout in March, Grassroots Yoga Center is offering its second Self-Care Wellness Fair Saturday, May 18. The center is located at 195 E. Winnie Lane.

Students at Fritsch Elementary School in Carson City were swinging for success with their participation in the San Francisco Giants Junior Giants initiative. The free, non-competitive and innovative baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-13, focuses on education, health and bullying prevention, providing a holistic approach to community sports.

Nevada Humane Society, Carson City branch's Pet of the Week is Valkerye, a one-year-old shepherd mix who still has a big puppy heart. She enjoys playing with children as she is used to living with them.

The Misfits Theater Group presents its 2024 Spring Production: Gold Casino or Bar Be Tender on the weekends of May 18-19 and May 24, 25 and 26, 2024.
