Speaking at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jason Hastings, one of five candidates for Mayor of Carson City. Jason earned a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from UNR in 2012. The primary is set for June 11, with early voting beginning on May 25th. The top two will advance to the general election.

Local medical student Alyssa Woodward will host the 4th Annual Suicide Awareness Race this Saturday, May 6. This will be held at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. Registration is available online, the evening before and race morning.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Karen Gedney MD, author of 30 Years Behind Bars: Trials of a Prison Doctor. Dr Gedney is an internal medicine specialist who spent almost three decades as a physician in Nevada's correctional system. Today she is an outspoken advocate for Holistic Prison Reform.

At a meeting recently, Carson City Democrats celebrated the fund raising efforts of its First Annual Plein Air Watercolor Competition. There was a $3,000 donation made to the C.I.R.C.L.E.S. Initiative for its work combating long term poverty and a $1,000 donation to a long standing scholarship fund at WNC targeted for Carson City students.

The popular 4-H Fabric sale returns to Fuji Park Exhibit Hall building, 701 Clear Creek Road, Carson City, on Saturday, Feb. 5 and Sunday, Feb. 6.

Gov. Steve Sisolak is proposing a two-year budget that reverses cuts to Medicaid and other key K-12 programs made last summer, after financial projections left the state at what officials are calling an “inconsistent, if not positive, ending point” for tax revenue.

Due to the COVID-19 virus and its impact on our community, the annual American Association of University Women Capital Branch Feast of Chocolate event, usually held in February at the Carson Plaza Event Center, must be reimagined this year. Our goal is to continue to provide scholarships for deserving young women in their pursuit of educational advancement.

Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine’s Office announced open enrollment for the Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program, which will end Friday, April 30. The Nevada Prepaid Tuition Program helps Nevada’s families affordably prepare their children for higher education by offering future in-state college tuition at today’s prices. The Program offers various payment plans to help meet the diverse needs of families across the silver state.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

While most students across the country have been learning online this fall because of COVID, a group of students at Western Nevada College took advantage of an exciting hands-on scientific learning opportunity earlier this month.

Jonah Toral, Nathan Parsons, and Bita Jazani were awarded the fifth annual Rosemary Nebesky Memorial Scholarships by the Carson City Symphony Association this month. The scholarship was established by John and Jennifer Webley of Santa Rosa, Calif., in memory Rosemary Nebesky, who loved music, loved children, and had been a friend and board member of the Carson City Symphony Association.

The Carson City School District and Carson High School are pleased to announce CHS Senior Cristian Garcia Perez has been named a semifinalist for the 2021 class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program, putting him in the running for one of the 150 college scholarships worth $20,000.

The Nevada State Treasurer’s Office last week announced the launch of NVigate, a new program and online platform providing students and parents access to essential information, programs and services to make informed decisions about planning, saving and budgeting for higher education.

Carson High School is pleased to announce five student athletes will carry their academic and athletic talents on to the next level in various Division 1 Scholarship signing ceremonies.

The Carson City Host Lions Club is pleased to announce the winning entries in the Nevada Day Chalk Art Contest held on Oct. 31. The contest was open to all Carson City residents, households and businesses. Contestants created chalk art masterpieces on their own driveways or sidewalks based on the Nevada Day theme of “My Favorite Moment in Nevada.”

The Carson City School District and Carson High School are pleased to announce CHS Seniors Abby Golik and Kobe Morgan have been honored as School Winners in the 2020 Heisman High School Scholarship competition awarded by The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance.

The Carson City Symphony Association announces the fifth annual instrumental music scholarship for Carson City students age 5 to 17. The scholarship was established by a generous gift from Jennifer and John Webley in memory of Rosemary Nebesky, former board member and friend of the Carson City Symphony Association.

The results are in. Students laughed at them because they had to dress differently, today, but they laughed at the students, too, because they were all dressed the same.

The teachers of Carson High School are continuing to ask if the community of Carson City would purchase a T-shirt to support both breast cancer awareness and CHS teacher Kelly Gustafson, who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

From the Famous first line of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, modified to appeal to the generosity of the Carson City community, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a (generous city) in possession of a good fortune must be in want of (helping to support a CHS teacher)."

The teachers of CHS are asking if this is still true? Of course it is. Men, women, and children of Carson City are encouraged to purchase a T-shirt to support both breast cancer awareness and CHS teacher Kelly Gustafson, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Each October, Nevadans turn their attention to the state capitol, Carson City, home of the “official” Nevada Day Parade. Since 1938, the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City has been an annual coming together to celebrate Nevada’s heritage and the founding of this great state on October 31, 1864.

Being a student at Carson High School is rewarding enough, academically speaking, but learning is happening everywhere; however, forcing a teacher to dress in pink, from head to toe, wearing a pink tutu, is a different story and an exciting fundraising opportunity.

The Carson High School Retro-Homecoming and Respect Week went without a hitch, and the beauty of it was administrators, teachers, and staff had nothing whatsoever to do with making the decisions as the students chose both the candidates and the winners.

Don’t wait. Students planning to attend Western Nevada College can begin submitting their 2021-22 Free Application for Federal Student Aid form on Thursday, Oct. 1, and financial aid officials are advising students not to wait.

CARSON CITY — High school students graduating from a Nevada high school in spring 2021 and planning to attend Western Nevada College in fall 2021 must apply for the Nevada Promise Scholarship no later than Oct. 31, 2020.

It may be a bit quiet around the high school lately, but this will not stop the CHS Student Council from making their senior year one to remember. Leadership Adviser Ann Britt said, “I am pleased to announce the Corona Virus cannot take the fun out of everything, so we are hosting a Spirit Week, Sept. 25 through Oct. 2, at CHS.”
