Fremont Elementary School hosts ribbon cutting unveiling new classrooms Friday
Submitted by Kelsey Penrose on Fri, 09/13/2019 - 6:25pmFremont Elementary and local dignitaries hosted a Ribbon Cutting ceremony Friday, Sept. 13, to celebrate the newly added classrooms and square footage completed from construction over the summer.
The ceremony also helped kick off the school's annual Fall Festival where dozens of community partners, sponsors and the school offered information, food, a raffle with over 30 prizes, and tons of fun for students and families.

This year’s event will feature an amazing array of raffle prizes, dunk tank, craft fair, silent auction, cake walk, carnival games, Bouncy Castles, prizes, food, bake sale, Nevada-grown pumpkins, wagon rides, juggling demonstrations and lots of family fun. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

This list of happenings in the Carson City area isn’t getting any shorter. The annual Genoa Candy Dance is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, and this weekend welcomes the first ever Silver State Arts Festival at Fuji Park, as well. The first ever Community Garage Sale at the Community Center offers one-stop bargain hunting. Swing into the season at the monthly dance party hosted by the High Sierra Swing Dance Club.

Break a leg to the cast of ‘Nightfall with Edgar Allen Poe.’ The Proscenium Players’ newest production opens tonight in the Brewery Arts Center’s Black Box Theater.

Today, it’s the Thirsty Third Thursday wine walk in downtown Gardnerville that gets the spotlight. Dayton’s weekly Farmers Market can be found this afternoon in front of ‘Community Roots’ on Highway 50. It’s probably past patio weather, but there is plenty of room inside of Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar for all of tonight’s karaoke lovers.

AAA Carson City to host Nov. 1 Fall Festival and Chamber Breakfast Club

The chamber mixer begins at 8 a.m. with breakfast and coffee at the AAA office, 2901 S. Carson Street. The fall festival continues from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. AAA will provide product discounts, games with prizes, and refreshments.

The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Admission to the event itself is free and will offer a free drawing prize ticket to attendees.

JoAnne Skelly: Expert advice on fruit tree care and maintenance
Submitted by editor on Sat, 10/24/2015 - 1:53pmIn the 1990s, I was the coordinator of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener program for four counties. Volunteers signed up for 45 hours of horticulture classes in exchange for a fee and 45 hours of volunteering.
I had one very dedicated volunteer, Michael Janik, now of Michaels Apples, who went on to become a leader in Northern Nevada in raising, training and pruning apples and other fruits.
