In a continuing series of profiles, Soroptimist International of Carson City welcomes the community join us in congratulating 2021 “Women Helping Women” honoree Katie Leao Geiser, who is among eight Carson City area women to be honored at our Feb. 18 virtual event.

As part of a series of profiles, Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to introduce Tiffany Kenison as one of our 2021 “Women Helping Women” honorees, who will be recognized at our Feb. 18 virtual recognition event.

Over the next five weeks leading up to Soroptimist International of Carson City's Feb. 18 virtual "Women Helping Women" recognition event, we will be introducing you to each of our 2021 "Women Helping Women" honorees.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to announce our “Women Helping Women” Honorees to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls in our community, at our Virtual “Celebrating Women Helping Women” Recognition Event, via Zoom, on February 18, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is seeking nominations for its annual Ruby Award. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making a difference in the lives of women or girls in the areas of health, education, and economic and social development and inspires and encourages other women.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Members of Carson City Soroptimist helped Santa fulfill the Christmas lists of local homebound seniors. A big thank you to elves Cynthia Bunt and the FIG Insurance Agency for serving as Santa's workshop, and to Mary Luster for coordinating member efforts and getting the bags full of goodies to the Carson City Senior Center for delivery to homes in time for Christmas.

Do you know of a woman in our Carson City community who is dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls and should be recognized for her efforts? Soroptimist International of Carson City is accepting sponsorship submissions for our 2021 “Women Helping Women” honorees.

Soroptimist International of Carson City joins with our Partnership Sponsor, Allison MacKenzie, to invite businesses, nonprofits and local agencies to sponsor a woman from their company or from the community as a “Women Helping Women” Honoree in recognition of her dedication to improving the lives of women or girls. Honoree sponsorship submissions are due by December 31, 2020. Honorees will be recognized at our “Celebrating Women Helping Women” event, to be held virtually on February 18, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

Soroptimist International of Carson City invites the public to join our 12 noon, Sept. 23 program meeting via Zoom to hear about a new non-profit in town. Under the non-profit umbrella of The American Tea Mistresses International, fundraising is underway to create Lighthouse Lodge Re-Entry Services for non-violent offenders needing assistance with reintegration into our community after being released from the Carson City Jail or the Nevada State Prison.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is presenting a “Let’s Get Acquainted” orientation meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The public is invited to attend the event online via Zoom.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City is facing a possible closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortfall of funding. The Museum is now open and ready to serve all the families from this lovely region, and there are numerous ways the community can help.

As Women’s History Month comes to an end, the Carson City Chamber Board of Directors announces the recognition of ten exceptional women who have been — and will continue to be — important in the history of this city.

At its Program meeting on Wednesday, February 26, Carson City Soroptimist will feature John Malcolm, the Prevention Education Specialist for Safe Embrace, an area non-profit dedicated to educating the community and providing services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Happenings around the capital city Thursday include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, the launch of Thursday trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike at Linear Ditch, plus Soroptimist International of Carson City hosts "Celebrating Women Helping Women" at the Carson Nugget. There's also a joint meeting of the school board and the board of supervisors, and a documentary viewing and discussion of "Screenagers" hosted by the Carson City School District. Hitting the halfway mark of the shortened work week, Wednesday events around town include Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge monthly meeting, "State of the Counties" at Casino Fandango, a Capital City Arts Initiative reception for the "Photo Finished 2020" exhibition featuring the works of 9 Carson High School students, a Bee City USA Carson City meeting at the community center, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, and more.

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

Carson City Soroptimist will present the Live Your Dream Award, five scholarships, and recognize four Girls of the Month during its January program meeting. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. It will be Wednesday, Jan. 22, noon to 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

The City of South Lake Tahoe celebrated its largest and most successful Fourth of July parade ever, with 80 entrants, 300 walkers and thousands crowding the streets to watch, officials said Thursday.

Anticipation of graduation and trepidation about the future are the thoughts running through the veins of the Carson High School Class of 2019 as they contemplate walking onto the football field as high school seniors and bouncing off the football field as CHS graduates looking forward to the new places and faces of tomorrow.

Heading into the middle of the work week, Wednesday, May 22, there's no short supply of places to go and things to do around Carson City. Sure you may want to pull out your parkas or sweaters for the day. All the more reason to take in those rays of sunshine when the clouds break. Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

During its lunch meeting on April 24, Carson City Soroptimist will present the Ruby Award to Susan Sorenson, the founder and director of the Northern Nevada Dream Center.
