The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is holding its first open house of 2023 at the historic Wungnema House this Sunday, April 30, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Monday's Democratic luncheon will feature a presentation by David Bugli, conductor of the Carson City Symphony and leader of the Mile High Jazz Band, which he founded in 1998. He is also Secretary and past President of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation and Secretary of the Carson City Historical Society.

Through grassroots fundraising, a group of Carson City pickleball players raised over $12,000. The group will be donating the funds to the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation for court surface repairs and the conversion of one tennis court to a pickleball court.

Periodically, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation recognizes individuals, organizations, and businesses for having made notable contributions to our community and for their support of the Foundation’s and Carson City Parks Department’s missions by selecting them to receive a Community Award. FCCPR’s Board of Directors recently selected Friends of Silver Saddle and Cinderlite Trucking Corporation and Materials (Cinderlite) for this year’s Community Awards.

Heading into the first of the work week, there's some uncertainty due to concerns over the coronavirus. Some activities will go on as scheduled while others may be canceled. We're advising you check with event organizers ahead of time before you plan on attending.

Heading into the middle of the work work, activities around town include a yoga class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a midweek meditation series offered at Carson City Yoga, conversational Spanish classes at Partnership Carson City, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, a presentation of "Valiant Women of The Vote" Mix and Mingle honoring the 19th Amendment at the Governor's Mansion, Ladies Night at Bella Vita Bistro, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and much more. The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department, periodically recognizes, through their “Community Awards” deserving individuals, organizations, and businesses for outstanding contributions made to further the combined missions of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation and the Carson City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Open Space.

The Parks Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing earlier this week of Sandy Osheroff, the Foundation’s longtime Treasurer.

Parks Foundation president, David Johnson, announced on Friday that the Foundation’s Board of Directors, continuing the Foundation’s practice of recognizing outstanding contributions in furtherance of Carson City’s parks, recreational facilities and open space, designated Sandy Osheroff as the “2020 Volunteer of the Years” at their December meeting.

Sandra Louise Osheroff, aka Sandy, nanny, and mom, a mother, bookkeeper, dog lover and community mover and shaker, adored by many, feared by some, died of cancer on January 20, 2020 in Carson City, Nevada at the age of 82.

As Carson City’s disc golf complex nears completion, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation’s president, David Johnson, announced that the Foundation recently received a generous donation from the Nevada Division of the National Pony Express Association, for the sponsorship of a hole at the Carson Ridge Disc Golf Park.

The Wungnema House is the charming stone cottage located on the east side of Mills Park across from Carson High. It was built by a family of skilled Hopi stonemasons shortly after WWII and served as the family’s home until the early 1970s. There is no admission fee, and all are welcome.

With the goal of returning the railroad to operation this summer, the Carson City Railroad Association will be hosting Saturday track repair work sessions in Mills Park. CCRA would like to extend an invitation to any able-bodied volunteer willing to be a Gandy Dancer for a few hours on the Carson City and Mills Park Railroad.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Community Service Awards for year 2018 recipients in a brief ceremony on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at 5:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park.

Just in time for summer, join with members of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation, Carson City Parks staff, and others this Wednesday, June 27 at 2 p.m. for the official opening of the Sonoma Park dog fountain.

UPDATE: 3:46PM: Sonoma Park in Carson City will be closed for a renovation project Monday, June 18 and will open up to normal activities on June 20.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch.
