CARSON CITY — The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum announced Thursday it is reopening to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 19, the day after the nation celebrates Martin Luther King Day.

MINDEN — Douglas County businesses and non-profits can now request to receive free personal protective equipment (PPE) and sanitizing products. Through the CARES Act, Douglas County is able to make available PPE and sanitizing products to businesses and non-profits within Douglas County at no charge.

Science has always been a passion of mine, partly because I flunked science in high school and have never understood why. But I stumbled upon a gemstone of science the other day that would make the most lettered academic in the world smile.

Distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine is underway within the state of Nevada, including our local communities in the north. Those who are first up to receive the vaccine include health care personnel and long term care facilities as a part of the first phase of Tier 1 distribution.

The first batch of initial COVID-19 vaccines has reached Carson City, and was received by Carson Tahoe Health Tuesday morning.

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced on Sunday that he is extending current coronavirus health and safety restrictions for another month and putting in place a new moratorium on evictions through the end of March.

On Friday, the Greenhouse Project held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new outdoor classroom which will be used to host both students from Carson High School as well as community classes on gardening and agriculture.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public and Behavioral Health is expanding the capabilities of the COVID Trace app by launching Exposure Notification Express through a partnership with Apple and Google.

At the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, an affiliate of Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah and accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, convenience is paramount. Even in the midst of a global pandemic the cancer center has made it a priority to improve their patients’ health, comfort, and well-being by utilizing new and effective technology.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Putting gratitude into action by helping others is an authentic way to express an attitude of thanksgiving. Students at Pioneer High School (PHS) “lost themselves” in service by assembling Thanksgiving dinner baskets for those in need.

CARSON CITY — Students in grades K-5 at Empire Elementary School have been learning and working on hydroponics in their classrooms as well as remotely from home this past semester and are enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Partnership Carson City, founded to develop a healthy community, is showing appreciation for Carson City’s teachers and senior citizens with a school supply and decorations giveaway. JOANN Fabrics and Crafts generously donated several boxes of seasonal holiday decorations and PCC is including an assortment of school supplies available for use.

Western Nevada College and greenUP! announced Monday the formation of the Nevada Green Business Network, part of a statewide effort to generate a green business certification program.

As college students and family members head home for the holidays, an important item on their to-do list should be to immediately get a flu vaccine if they haven’t already done so. Current pandemic guidelines recommend limiting social contact beyond our own households, which creates even more responsibility for everyone to protect each other.
