Summer fun is heating up! Let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Triathlon at Mills Park. You’ll find all the colors of the rainbow, plus great music and fun times, at the Festival of Unity and Community: Sassabration. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. The Brewery Arts Center free Concert Series continues tonight with Remember Jones on the stage; bring the family and your friends for a good time had by all. Read on for even more hot summer fun.

SATURDAY:

  • 15th annual Capitol City Kids Triathlon - Swim at Carson City's indoor Olympic sized pool, and bike and run in Mills Park ($25; check-in at the Aquatic Center Registration Desk 7am-10:30am, Athletes should be checked in for their race 30 minutes before race start; same-day registrations will be accepted up to 45 minutes before each category start time; Start times: 8am 13-18yrs, 8:45am 11-12yrs, 9:30am 9-10yrs, 10am 7-8yrs, 10:30am 4-6yrs; Participants must provide their own swimsuit, goggles, towels, running shoes, bicycle, and bike helmet. Participants will not be allowed to compete without proper attire or safety equipment. Helmets are REQUIRED to be worn during the entire biking segment; Parents/Guardians must be on-site during the entire event; After-party with Snow cones, bounce house, snack bar, raffle)

  • Muscle Powered One Hour Trash Mob: East Silver Saddle Ranch – Meet in the new parking area off Sierra Vista Lane, one mile south of Pinon Hills Road, then turn right at the Muscle Powered flag (8am-9am; closed-toed shoes or boots and long pants are necessary - a long sleeved shirt is highly recommended.   • Dayton Pigs Desert Cleanup – Meet in front of Calvary Chapel Church on Enterprise Way in Dayton (8am-10am; From there, we will be hitting the trails in the Sutro area, clearing out couches, appliances, etc; Bring a truck/trailer if you have one – everyone welcome, work gloves, and water - First aid kit, eye protection, dust mask, rake, and shovel recommended, and don't wear your favorite shoes; Trash cans, extra trash bags, and shovels are always welcome - If you bring an empty trailer and get it loaded, we'll cover the dump fees; Dayton Pigs is a community effort to rid our beautiful wild spaces of trash left behind from out-of-control illegal dumping)
  • Cruise For Food Event at C.O.D. Casino: 1593 Esmeralda Ave, Minden (8am-2pm, registration 8am-10am, winners announced inside at 2pm; registration is a non-perishable food donation; 1980 or older must sign up for players card and get $20 bucks free play per car; Win a plaque, get $25 free play, all entries get two free drink tokens; Live Music, vendors, food and photo booth; benefit for the Carson Valley Food Pantry)

  • — Edwards Motor Car Rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (Museum open 9am-4:30pm, admission for adults is $6, children under 18 are free; Motor Car Rides available from 10am-4pm and last approximately 35 minutes – Fares are $4 for ages 12 and over; $2 for museum members and ages 4-11, and free for ages 3 and under - Motor car No. 401 was built by the Edwards Motor Car Co. of Sanford, NC and put into service October 1926 by the Tucson, Cornelia & Gila Bend Railroad of Ajo, AZ. Meals on Wheels is a program that makes sure that the most vulnerable of our community’s residents don’t go without a nutritious meal. The annual Senior Follies variety show, starring some incredible local talent, is a fundraiser for that great program. Showing your support is as easy as attending this fun show.

What to do on this Sunday fun day… You could always start out with a refreshing bicycle ride with the local hike and bike trail lovers of Muscle Powered. With the summer heat in full effect, celebrate Christmas in July with the V and T Railroad. They are kicking off the upcoming Polar Express Train with special treats for this weekend’s riders. No one will notice if you shed a few tears at the showing of Top Gun at the Galaxy Theater; if losing Goose doesn’t make you cry a little, you weren’t paying attention.

All aboard for fall family fun at the annual two-day Harvest Train Festival, which wraps up Sunday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, bringing train rides and autumn-inspired activities, including pumpkin patch, crafts hosted by Messy Kids Art School, and carnival-style games hosted by local non-profits.

Four-legged heroes representing law enforcement agencies from throughout the region will shine Saturday, Oct. 19 as the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its third annual K9 Unit Challenge and public K9 obstacle course at Fuji Park.

Early voting in Nevada begins today, Saturday, Oct. 19 and runs through Friday, Nov. 1. In Carson City, in person voting for both Early Voting and Election Day will take place at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

Early voting on Saturdays is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Early voting on weekdays is 9 a.m. to 6 pm. Election Day voting is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This Saturday, October 19 is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. A suspect who allegedly made violent threats against an elementary school in Sonoma County, Calif. was arrested at Lake Tahoe on Monday evening.
