When Bobby Kennedy was tragically shot and killed in 1968, his killer was set upon and wrestled to the ground by Rafer Johnson. For those too young to remember, Rafer Johnson was the first black captain of a United States Olympic Team, and was crowned the best all-around athlete in the world when he won the decathlon in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

Tragedy struck during the annual Lake Tahoe Marathon on August 24 when a 64-year-old El Dorado Hills man died during the swimming portion of the race near Sugar Pine Point.

Double-amputee joins Mission Senior Living team for Reno-Tahoe Odyssey

At the start of the 14th Annual Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure on Friday in Wingfield Park, Jonah Vandever will join runners scheduled for the 7:30 a.m. start time. Only the 20-year-old double amputee won’t be running, he’ll be hand-cycling.

Following eight seasons of skating and in need of approximately $100,000 worth of new equipment and repair, the Arlington Square Ice Rink in downtown Carson City will not be in operation this winter, according to city officials.

Carson City friends celebrate Martin Luther King with annual bar game triathlon for charity

Five years ago on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, six Carson City friends were looking to do something meaningful to celebrate the man and his ideas of equality, peace and goodwill.

They began discussing their options at Ed’s Dog House, a Carson City bar. One friend brought up the idea of doing something to benefit a local charity. Another friend suggested making a contest of it, traveling to a couple of other local bars and competing in games of pool, shuffleboard and darts.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through August 30

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of August 24-30, 2015. Crews will continue re-striping pavement markings on roadways throughout the city Sunday through Thursday each night from 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. There will be a moving traffic control at locations where the striping occurs, with minor delays expected.

Highway 89 motorists can expect delays during this weekend's Lake Tahoe Triathlon

Motorists traveling along Highway 89 on the west shore this weekend can expect delays during the Lake Tahoe Triathlon.

The California Department of Transportation said the highway will not close during events but California Highway Patrol officers will be conducting traffic control at several locations along the courses, including several turnaround spots for the cyclists.

Registration open for weekend women’s Paddle Board Triathlon at Lake Tahoe

Kaia FIT is hosting its fourth annual Paddle Board Triathlon at El Dorado Beach and the surrounding Al Tahoe neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe this weekend.
“It’s in Lake Tahoe so, of course, it’s absolutely breathtaking,” said Kai FIT owner Nikki Warren. “There’s great music and just a great atmosphere.”

Carson City area children cross the finish line Saturday at Capital City Kids' Triathlon

Dripping wet from the swim and breathless from the bike ride and run, kids of all ages crossed the finish line at the 12 annual Capital City Kids' Triathlon. Bright and early Saturday at 8:00 a.m. kids lined up to begin the triathlon where they must complete a swim portion, a bike riding portion and a running portion of the race.

Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Sign the kids up for the Capital City Kids’ Triathlon at the Carson Aquatic Center. Head out to Mills Park for a few laps on the train or a picnic. Don’t miss out on making a bowl for the Empty Bowls project at the Farmers Market; or let the kids run off to the bounce house while you make a bowl yourself.

Wind shift keeps King Fire smoke away from Carson City

The King Fire, which started a week ago, Sept. 13, has now burned nearly 81,000 acres east of Pollock Pines in El Dorado County. As of Saturday morning, the human-caused fire is 10 percent contained.

Expedition Man Endurance Festival comes to Northern Nevada

Coming from as far as Australia and as near as North Lake Tahoe, more than 200 men and women athletes are gearing up for a race to remember at Northern Nevada’s inaugural Expedition Man Endurance Festival and Ultra-Distance-Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 25. Athletes will begin with a swim at Zephyr Cove Resort at Lake Tahoe, then onto a more than 100-mile-bike-ride through Carson City and a long-run along the Truckee River, ending at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

“It’s what I know,” he said. “It’s what I do.”
What Huber knows is the world of cycling.
Huber is a former professional cyclist who had several top-10 finishes in the World Cycling Championships and held the speed record for a self-powered vehicle in 1993.

New adventure events complement Lake Tahoe South summer line-up

Lake Tahoe South steps into high endurance overdrive this summer with two new outdoor adventure events that celebrate speed, agility and skill — one with feet to the ground and the other rubber to the road.

Sierra Recon, a high-energy, multi-distance obstacle race screaming the amped premise, “Everyone loves carnage” is set for July 14 at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, while the Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous celebrates the freedom of the wide open road, Aug. 23-26.

North Lake Tahoe to Host Full Distance Ironman in 2013

North Lake Tahoe announced today that it will host the first full-distance Ironman event in California since 2001. The competition is scheduled to take place September 22, 2013.
