Distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine is underway within the state of Nevada, including our local communities in the north. Those who are first up to receive the vaccine include health care personnel and long term care facilities as a part of the first phase of Tier 1 distribution.

The first batch of initial COVID-19 vaccines has reached Carson City, and was received by Carson Tahoe Health Tuesday morning.

RENO, Nev. — The Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada’s goal is to provide an opportunity for urban Indian populations to receive testing.

The Dayton Farmers Market opened for the 2020 season on June 11. The market will take place every Thursday this summer from 3 to 6 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50, across from Pizza Factory. Market-goers will find seasonal, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, honey, and more from our region’s farmers.

CARSON CITY — The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services announced Tuesday additional resources to help applicants use the online benefit portal, Access Nevada, at accessnevada.dwss.nv.gov. The agency is also urging uninsured Nevadans to apply for Medicaid coverage online.

Stimulus Program Information

The coronavirus relief bill passed March 27 by Congress provides payments to individuals who make less than $100,000 a year. The payment total $1,200 for each adult who makes $75,000 or less, plus $500 per child. The payment amounts decrease if you make between $75,000 and $99,000. The income is determined by your latest tax return filed with the IRS. It will use your 2019 taxes if you have filed them already, or your 2018 taxes if you haven't. CARSON CITY — Due to ongoing public health concerns over the spread of COVID-19, the Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services offices are closed to the public Monday, March 16, 2020. Offices will re-open Tuesday, March 17.

DAYTON — The new "3rd Thursday" events in Lyon County aim to bring groups, families and communities together with family friendly activities. The first event kicks off in Dayton this Thursday July 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. with music, family activities and games, a free BBQ by Healthy Communities Coalition, and information booths by Lyon County libraries, Human Services, Community Chest Inc, Community Roots and Shoots, etc.

DAYTON — Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties hosts its farmers market in Dayton for the 10th summer in a row. The market will be open on Thursday evenings from 4-7 pm this summer, beginning June 20th. It will be co-located with Healthy Communities’ new community garden, known as the Solidarity Garden. This will offer market patrons the opportunity to join the community garden as well.

Beginning April 3, Smith's Food and Drug Stores will no longer accept Visa credit cards as a form of payment because of the credit card company's excessive transaction fees, Smith's corporate offices announced in a statement.

Nevada Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Director Richard Whitley today announced that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) February payment will be issued at the end of January to ensure recipients are not affected by the federal shutdown.

December 21 is the Silver Stage Food Pantry’s fifth annual “Shopping with the Elves” event. From 1-5 p.m., parents who are guests of the Food Pantry can shop for gifts for their children.

The event includes a chance for children to visit with Santa and have holiday refreshments while their parents shop. The Pantry is in need of gifts for ages infant to 18 years.

Home-bound Seniors: The Pantry also welcomes donations of gifts for seniors. They deliver baskets and gifts to 40 home-bound elders, and sing carols to them as well.

Carson City Board of Supervisors will hear of plans Thursday to expand the sheriff's office by re-implementing the Traffic Enforcement Program, which was suspended eight years ago due to budget cuts because of the recession.

It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. We are running out of summer weekends. I know that’s hard to believe right now, but hoodies and everything pumpkin is just beyond the horizon. Grab summer with both hands and go enjoy this beautiful city. The Brewery Arts Center brings Dennis Johnson and the Mississippi Ramblers to the stage for tonight’s free concert. Check out the Railroad Museum for your fill of music and antique motor cars. Car lovers have two shows to choose from today: spectators will be able to enjoy both, but you’ll have to pick one if you want to enter your ride. Keep reading for more summertime fun.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Read on and you’ll find indoors and outdoors activities that will help alleviate the cabin fever.

The first Saturday of the month always plays host to the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, but with the Jazz and Beyond Musical Festival in full swing, you’ll have even more reasons to meander around downtown. The afternoon ice cream social at the historic Foreman-Roberts House is a perfect family-friendly treat before heading to the Brewery Arts Center for tonight’s free concert. Keep reading, you’ll find a little bit of something for everyone in the Carson City, Carson Valley, Dayton and Virginia City areas.

Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

Summer fun is heating up! Let the kids burn off some energy at the Kids Triathlon at Mills Park. You’ll find all the colors of the rainbow, plus great music and fun times, at the Festival of Unity and Community: Sassabration. Get your grub on at the annual Nevada Honor Flight Chili Cook-off at Glen Eagles, and make sure to check out the craft vendors. The Brewery Arts Center free Concert Series continues tonight with Remember Jones on the stage; bring the family and your friends for a good time had by all. Read on for even more hot summer fun.

If you’re feeling competitive, head down to the Carson Mall for their watermelon and hot dog eating contests. The Dayton Farmers Market has opened for the 2018 summer season. The market takes place every Saturday through September from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50.

It’s a planes, trains, and automobiles kind of weekend. Add in bands, bikes and bar-be-ques and we’ve got most of this weekend’s list covered. The Carson City Airport is celebrating 90 years at this year’s open house and fly-in. One of the summer’s best events with balloon rides, cool old planes, and much more: you won’t want to miss it. Beat the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; all admission fees have been waived today thanks to Carson City Toyota. Summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center begin tonight with the Original Wailers.

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

I just don’t have it in me to make an Ides of March pun, but I guess I could take a stab at it. There isn’t really anything to be wary of today, so head out with abandon. Band students from all the Carson City schools, elementary on up, will get together this evening for a grand performance. Band-o-Rama will take place in the ‘big’ gymnasium at Carson High; get there early if you want a good seat.
