I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: May 14-15

Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Take a gander at the whole list, there is plenty of stuff to do in the Carson City area this weekend.

SATURDAY:

• 24th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive (leave your donation of non-perishable food items at your mail box for mail carrier to pick up)
• Carson City Historic Resources Scavenger Hunt: go HERE for packet and
• Nevada Artists Association Art Exhibit featuring Bill Migan and Photography by Chas. H. McDonnell, III at the Carson Visitor Center (8am-5pm)
• EAA Sierra Chapter #403 Young Eagle Flights (Weather Permitting; open to ages 8-17; registration 8am at the Airport Terminal Building, orientation 8:30am; free, Registration Forms are available at the event) Coffee and Donuts (8am-12pm, all welcome) at 2500 E. College Pkwy
• ‘Let’s Sweep the Town’ Volunteer Event/Work Day at Heritage Park, Gardnerville (8:30am-11:30am; bbq lunch served to volunteers at 11:30am; Some equipment will be provided, however, bringing your own gloves, gardening tools and/or broom is ideal)
• Downtown Carson Spring Farmers Market – corner of Musser and N. Nevada St, behind Due Sorella (9am-1pm)
• >"Something in the Wind," celebration of the Washoe Zephyr: expert kite flyers, kite making, crafts for children, wind artists, and more at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch Park: 1450 Hwy 88, Minden (9am-6pm, weather permitting; FREE; bring a picnic, lawn chairs, and your kites; no pets)
• Annual Clean-up of the Pine Nuts Mountains Volunteer Event – Meet at the end of Johnson Lane, Minden (9am-2pm; bring gloves, trucks, trailers, and plenty of help)
• Muscle Powered Day Hike: Prison Hill -Meet at the trailhead at 5th and Carson River Road (9am-1pm; MUST HAVE: water and hiking boots, bring lunch or snacks, encourage hat and sun screen)

It’s time for a little spring cleaning. Lend a helping hand removing trash in the Pinenut Mountains or head to Heritage Park in Gardnerville. Free document shredding is available at Greater Nevada Credit Union in South Carson if you need to get rid of some clutter.

• Fire Museum Open House hosted by Warren Engine Co. No. 1 Volunteer Fire Department at Carson City Fire Department Station: 777 S. Stewart St., at the North End of the Station (10am-2pm; free hot dogs, chips, and sodas)
• Open House at Gaia Wellness and Yoga: 1475 Old Hot Springs Rd Ste 1 (10am-4pm)
• DHS Ag Department presents the FFA Plant Sale at Douglas High School, Minden (10am-2pm)
• Seniors Swim Free at Paradise Salon and Spa: Executive Pointe off College Pkwy (10am-5pm, except during class times; 55 and older; indoor adult warm saltwater pools)
• Lego Club at the Carson City Library (10am-12pm; sign up at Youth Desk, limited space; children under 9 must be accompanied by someone 13 or older)

Kids will love the historic fire engines at the Fire Museum Open House. If Legos are their thing, the Carson Library is the place to be. Head to the Nevada State Museum for Family Fun Day with special Wild and Wonderful Wetlands activities.
