Mother’s Day

In their nearly 70-year marriage, Georgia and Lew Foster had never spent a single anniversary apart, and they weren’t about to break that tradition because of COVID-19.

Celebrating their 70th-wedding anniversary would require some planning and creativity on the part of Summit Estates Senior Living and Memory Care, where Lew lives, but this sort of planning is in this team’s wheelhouse.

My neighbor Mark, now known as “Chip” after Chip Gaines from “Fixer Upper” on HGTV, acquired his new moniker after building an amazing fence to enclose his wife’s garden (with her help of course!). Since we have major animal challenges in our neighborhood — ground squirrels, rabbits, deer and bears — a strong defense system is essential for successful vegetable production. The impressive garden fence that "Chip" built should keep all the critters out.

Susie Bongers-Gunkel passed away peacefully the morning of Sunday, May 10, 2020 on Mother’s Day with the love of her family surrounding her after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma (Brain Cancer).

CARSON CITY — On the heels of an incredibly successful 2019 season and due to popular demand, V&T Railway has begun early ticket sale booking for the 2020 season. As with prior seasons, the 2020 season will include vintage steam train rides from Carson City to Virginia City, Toast of the Canyon wine and beer trains and the popular Polar Express in addition to other themed and special event trains.

The weekend is at our doorstep as we head into Friday, May 10, 2019. Even though forecasters say we may have showers this weekend, the cool spring rain won't dampen the fun. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

Heading into Thursday, May 9, 2019 we're looking at a few showers and partly sunny skies around Carson City. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. This weekend, grab mom and the family and come on out to the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, located on the campus of Carson High School.

Due to the event’s growing popularity, the sale is expanding to both Friday, May 10, 2:30 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 11, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m.

My friend Marie was told recently it was illegal to harvest rainwater in Nevada. She was referring to putting large barrels under gutter downspouts to catch and store water running off a roof. Many people have done this for years, but actually it was illegal in Nevada until 2017.

Celebrating more than three decades of rides, games and fun, 2019 marks the 34th year that Nevada Rural Counties RSVP will host its Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City, May 9-12.

To grow strawberries successfully there are a few things to know: which type and variety to select, the correct growing conditions, how to rejuvenate a bed and how to protect those succulent fruits from the critters.

The Greenhouse Project hosts its annual Early Spring Plant Sale, Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering an array of perennial and annual varieties ready to go into your garden.

Reno Aces catcher Anthony Recker put a bow on Mother’s Day during a 5-4 victory over El Paso. Recker finished 1-for-3, including a two-run bomb in the seventh inning, to secure an Aces victory.

Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. The Greenhouse Project hosts the annual Carson City Mother’s Day Plant Sale, May 12, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring a wide variety of plants for your summer planting and gardening.

Make this Monday a pizza kind of day. The annual Relay for Life relay is just around the corner, and the Pizza Factory on Highway 50 is helping out the cause by donating a portion of tonight’s proceeds to the organization. Mother’s Day is coming up fast and the Carson Mall would like to lend a hand. You’ll find a vendor craft fair set up all week to help you find something special. Community Yogi has yoga classes for all levels at various locations throughout the week.

Success, lifestyle, memories: All these describe yearbook.

For the 2017-2018 school year, a staff of 47 was dedicated to making a memorable book for others to keep throughout their lives and be passed down through generations; and again the book received the Gallery of Excellence Award, in which the book is used as an example of a successful yearbook in schools and at conferences across the country.

Not a cloud in the sky, and yet we have been hit by a perfect storm: Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby Day, and the monthly wine walk have all collided. Let me tell you, downtown is going to be hopping, not to mention the Early Season Farmers Market making its seasonal debut in the parking lot at W. Musser and N. Nevada – just behind Due Sorella. Take the kids down to Bailys Pond at Fuji Park for the annual Tom Brooks Memorial Kids’ Fishing Day. A trip to the train museum comes with the opportunity to ride on the Historic McKeen Motor Car.

Intimate Designs Floral and Angels With Flowers are hosting a challenge again this year, wanting to know, “Why is your Mom the best Mom?” The winner’s mother will receive a free custom flower arrangement delivered to her on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 13.
