Spring Concert

Heading into the first Monday of February, we're hoping your post Super Bowl day is filled with a few extra dollars in your pocket, tasty leftovers for lunch and some good-hearted conversational quarterbacking. Activities around the capital city include a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar, a free Partnership Carson City Yoga class at the Carson City Community Center, art activities and showings, swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

Consort Canzona, an early music performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, will begin rehearsals on Monday, Feb. 3, for their May concerts. The program features Madrigals from the Renaissance through the Baroque, and includes separate and combined instrumental and vocal selections. Rehearsals are Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive.

Benjamin Franklin, one of the best gamers of all time said, “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” The adults sure could learn a thing or two from the students at CHS because Winterfest 2020 played out, pun intended, just like it was supposed to with Carson's Got Game being the theme.

A free Spring concert performed by The Capital City Community Band under the direction of Nick Jacques with Richard Doede, director Emeritus, got underway Sunday afternoon at the amphitheater in the Legislative Mall on Carson Street in Carson City.

Good morning Carson City, and happy June! We have a ton of events going on today in our beloved capital city, with the June wine walk, the first day of the farmer’s market, a brew fest at Fuji park, and more! With a high of 75, it’s shaping up to finally start to feel like summer (knock on wood).

Heading into a jam-packed weekend of events around the Carson City region, there's a bevy of activities Friday to get your started. Lace up your shoes for a morning walk at Riverview Park, and then head on over to the Nevada State Museum for a coin press demonstration, and tours that explore anthropology and Nevada history. Later there's a cruise night gathering at Carson Mall to benefit Safe Grad Night, an Italian dinner fundraiser at the Governor's Mansion to benefit Carson City's homeless, live music at Living the Good Life and A to Zen, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club, and much more. Recently, several CHS freshman Biology classes had the opportunity to work with fourth graders from Empire Elementary in Carson City. Students learned about conservation, the water cycle, and the Carson River watershed. CHS students, trained by the River Wranglers conservation group, and on a very windy day, met up with Empire Elementary students at Baily Pond.

CARSON CITY — The Carson High School Wind Ensemble and Midnight Blues Jazz Ensemble performed in southern California taking home numerous awards at last weekend’s Music in the Parks Festival.

Lightning in Northern Nevada, while pretty to see in the sky, can be devastating once it strikes ground. We don’t have the same negative thoughts about thunder, though, especially when talking about Blue Thunder, the award-winning band from Carson High. See what the rumble is about during their free spring concert this evening in the Bob Boldrick Theater. 3-D Printing is a brand-new technology, and almost something out of science-fiction.

Western Nevada College may be finished with its semester, but they don’t just shutter the doors and pack it in. Go check out the Bristlecone Art Gallery where you’ll find a plethora of True-Grit inspired artwork: it’s pretty spectacular what these artists have done with a simple deck of playing cards. It may be a little too wet for this evening’s Muscle Powered hike, but you’ll find other opportunities to burn off a little steam. Try Carson Lanes Country/Pop Dance Night, or try your hand at all-ages trivia at the Fox Brewpub or Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. The Carson City Symphony’s Youth Strings Ensemble takes to the stage today for their spring concert, Music is for Life (Goes to the Movies), where you will hear them perform selected scores from our favorite cinema classics like James Bond and the Sound of Music. Teens can learn more about Geology during today’s STEM program at the Carson City Library, and those with a Sewing Certification can join in today’s workshop and walk away with a handy zippered bag.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day and Earth Week than gorgeous weather that you just can’t help but enjoy. Join Muscle Powered and our Parks and Recreation Department at the Silver Saddle Ranch for a presentation and trash mob. Kids will love the Carnival at Bordewich Elementary School, and it helps raise funds for a local Cub Scout Pack. Mark Twain Elementary is hosting their annual Color Run at Mills Park, just make sure to wear a white shirt.

Okay. This is one of the hardest weekend lists I’ve ever had to do. This dump of snow has cancelled some events, but others are in full force. Best I can tell, St. Patrick’s Day parties are not deterred by a little snowfall. There will be no parade in Virginia City, but the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fest is on. Head to downtown Carson for more green beer, Irish music, and corned beef and cabbage than you’ll know what to do with.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. Lend a hand to Muscle Powered this morning as their monthly Trash Mob tackles the Linear Park Trail. Keep reading for great ideas on how to have some fun.

SATURDAY:

It’s a perfect day to wander around. The Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walk along Main Street Gardnerville kicks off its season with a Mardi Gras theme. Take an easy hike with Muscle Powered along Voltaire Canyon, and your leashed, friendly dog is invited to join. Congratulations to the Battle Born Business Center; their Grand Opening Celebration includes a live reggae band. The Carson High Bands take to the Bob Boldrick Theater stage in their final concert of the school year; go cheer on the award-winning Blue Thunder. You won’t want to miss a special night with the Novelists at Sassafras.

It looks like spring just skipped right by us this year. It took a while, but we’re finally on the upswing towards summer. Celebrate with some fresh produce from the first-of-the-season Sierra Chef Farmers Market in Gardnerville’s Lampe Park. ‘Explore Summer Programs’ at the Carson City Library will introduce you to some options for your kids during the long break. Muscle Powered invites you to participate in their ‘Ride of Silence’ to bring awareness to the importance of sharing the road; meet at Telegraph Square at 7 p.m., and don’t forget your helmet.

I’m in love with sunshiny days. Unfortunately, something cloudy is around the corner, so please embrace what today gives us – as Northern Nevadans, we know that the weather is fickle. Thursdays offer up karaoke at Westside Pour House and Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar – too much fun for a weekday. You may have noticed the hullaballoo at Mills Park; the annual Mothers’ Day Carnival opens tonight, and all of the rides are only one dollar each thanks to the generosity of Dick Campagni’s Carson City Toyota Scion.

Get your fill of sunshine today, we’ve got a wet wine walk weekend coming. The stars will be shining bright tonight, though, Western Nevada Musical Theater Company debuts its spring musical ‘Nice Work if You Can Get It’ complete with amazing choreography, melodies, and an exceptional cast. Cinco de Mayo parties all over town offer up food and drink specials, in addition to the fun times that can usually be found on a Friday night. Start the day with a cup of joe or a yummy blended drink at Dutch Brothers Coffee and you’ll be helping find a cure for ALS.

I’m hoping that April brings more than just showers. Not that I don’t love the spring flowers, but I’m really ready for some sunshine. Start off the month with a clean kitchen: let the Elks Club take care of breakfast. Grab your guitar, tambourine, ukulele, or vocal chords and join the A to Zen Music Jam. Head ‘North by Northwest’ at the Galaxy Theater. The classic thriller is on the big screen at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

SUNDAY:

It may be April’s Fools Day, but the fun going on around town is no joke. Get your blood pumping with the Carson Canyon Half Marathon (or Half/Half Marathon if you want something shorter.) It’s Wine Walk weekend, and with the sunny day you have no reason to stay home. The Youth Theater Carson City Showstoppers want to ‘Give Our Regards to Broadway’ during their one weekend only production. There’s too much to mention in this short opening paragraph, so keep reading for all the great things our valley and sister valleys have to offer.

SATURDAY:

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra will present an eclectic array of music and announce the 2017 Scholarship winners at their Annual Spring Concert on April 1 at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley CIVC Hall.

Let the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra put your family in a festive mood at their annual Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. on December 10 at the Carson Valley CVIC Hall.

This free concert will feature traditional tunes such as White Christmas, Oh Holy Night and Silent Night. The Voices of the Sierra Choir will perform several holiday selections and the always-popular holiday sing along is also planned.

Led by Co-Conductors Stephanie Reynolds and C.J. Birch, this performance is a perfect way to celebrate the holidays with your friends and family.

The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra will delight young and old with a lineup of musical selections with a “Flight of Fantasy” theme, at their annual fall concert, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Carson Valley CVIC Hall.

This free concert will feature selections from Star Wars, Star Trek, music from Apollo 13, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, among others. Led by Co-Conductors Stephanie Reynolds and C.J. Birch, former band director at Carson High, this performance is a perfect way to celebrate the changing of the seasons with your friends and family.

Friday! We have survived the workweek, and for the students of Western Nevada College, the semester. Kick up your heels and enjoy yourselves tonight. Whether you want karaoke, comedy, live music, or dancing: you have a multitude of choices. Sip wine and paint at Van Gogh and Vino or Mona Lisa and Wine. Enjoy open mic at A to Zen or dance performances at Comma Coffee. Bella Voce presents their ‘Poets Great and Small’ free spring concert at the Methodist Church on Musser St. So many choices: take a look at the whole list to find out what is right for you.

FRIDAY:

If you were looking for a lazy day, today might not be it. Carson City BMX welcomes moms to the track today; their Mother’s Day race was postponed due to the wet weather. Virginia City still has plenty of chili on the menu, in addition to their annual Fun with the Runs 5K. Gardeners will want to head to Douglas High School for the Future Farmers of America plant sale.
