CARSON CITY — In the years since Tom Gray first set foot in his dad’s V&T Railroad shop in 1974, the world has seen many changes. “They’re paving over all the dirt roads, old buildings are crumbling,” he observed.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. SATURDAY:

In the world of used cars, there is used and then is Carson Car Center used.

"Our used inventory is different from other used inventory, because 80 percent of our cars are slightly pre-owned," said Carson Car Center General Manager Wayne Lew. "Used 2015, 2016 and 2017 cars make up the majority of the lot."

I hope you like live music, Carson City, because tonight you’ve got plenty of it. No matter what your style, there is someone for you. Take the kids to the Nevada State State Train Museum for Lucky Diamond and the Gents of Jive or to the McFadden Plaza for an outdoor concert with Musicole. Enthusiasts who restore old cars are their own kind of virtuoso, said Loretta Marcin, president of the Karson Kruzers.
“I always compare car people to artists,” she said. “They have their own different styles and different colors. I just like seeing different versions and different variations.”

If you were looking for a lazy day, today might not be it. Carson City BMX welcomes moms to the track today; their Mother’s Day race was postponed due to the wet weather. Virginia City still has plenty of chili on the menu, in addition to their annual Fun with the Runs 5K. Gardeners will want to head to Douglas High School for the Future Farmers of America plant sale. Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Take a gander at the whole list, there is plenty of stuff to do in the Carson City area this weekend.

SATURDAY:

Airplane owners, their aircrafts, old cars and motocycles, pilots, sponsors, vendors and guests of all ages can be found at the Carson City Airport grounds today, Saturday, for the airport's annual open house.

Planes will take to the skies through 4 p.m. The event is free and guests can can participate in interactive activities and magnificent displays the open house offers.

The weekend is getting an early start. Carson Valley Days in Gardnerville kicks off with their Lampe Park carnival, and Dangberg Historic Ranch Home off Highway 88 hosts the first of their Twilight Concerts with Ciana. You can meet Author Laura Lea White at the Browser’s Corner Book Shop tonight; copies of her book ‘Generational Gifts: The Legacy of Evelyn Marie’ will be available. Silver Dollar Cruise Night is at Dunkin' Donuts; every Thursday through summer you'll find hot rods, street racers, and cool old cars at a different location.

THURSDAY:

First make a list of your collections of special items. It could be antique furniture, old guns, special china or silverware, dolls, sculptures, old cars, baseball cards, etc.

Then consider meeting with the family before you decide which items will go to which family members (or friends). Maybe a beneficiary will prefer receiving cash instead of a collectible item.

Then think about which person will be the best choice for particular items. Which one will pass on to the grandchildren and future generations?
