Celebrate Washoe Valley Day tomorrow, Saturday May 18

A celebration for Washoe Valley Day hosted by the Washoe Valley Alliance will be held at Washoe State Park tomorrow, Saturday May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and park fees will be waived for the festivities.

There will be live music and activities for all ages, and pets are welcome as long as they are kept on leashes.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. CARSON CITY — In Nevada, we know all too well that wildfires can strike at any time of the year. In recognition of National Wildfire Awareness Month in May, the Nevada Division of Forestry is collaborating with partnering agencies to help promote the importance of preventing, planning and preparing for wildfires in Nevada — during the warmer months and throughout the year.

Ready to have some fun? Virginia City’s Chili on the Comstock Cook-off goes on all weekend. For some healthier fare, hit up the Spring Farmers Market downtown. Go fly a kite at Dangberg Home Historic Park, just past Douglas High School on Highway 88; their ‘Something in the Wind’ Celebration is both Saturday and Sunday. Don’t forget to leave non-perishable food by your mailbox: the annual ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ food drive is today. Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t afraid of a little wind, are we? The Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is celebrating our infamous Washoe Zephyr this weekend with kite making, demonstrations, and more. The Friends of the Silver Saddle Ranch would love to see you at their open house on Saturday; if you’re an early riser, join them on a 7 a.m. bird walk. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is hosting their annual Cops and Kids Open House, so head to the courthouse for some fun.

Washoe Lake State Park is offering a variety of events and hikes in May. There will be a full moon hike, a Celebrate Washoe Valley Day, and a moderate hike through the sand dunes. Participants will learn about the natural and cultural history of the park and surrounding area.
