I Love Carson City’s Memorial Day Weekend Event Summary: May 26 - 28

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

SATURDAY:  

  • — ‘Supporting History’ Ninth Annual Carson City Historic Resources Scavenger Hunt: for participation packet and more info, go to http://carson.org/hrc  - This year we are focusing on columns, posts, pillars, or pedestals  
  • Muscle Powered: Day Hike or Half-Hike along Hobart Road to Hobart Reservoir - Meet at 8am at the end of the pavement on Hobart Road in the Lakeview neighborhood (This is a strenuous 10-mile round-trip hike for fit, experienced hikers! The road to the crest of the mountain is very steep - by request, we are also offering a "Half-hike" of 4-5 miles round-trip on this same route, turning back at approximately the mid-point of the hike, steepness of the route is the same; Two Hiking poles, hats, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, a good hat, and a camera are highly recommended and we require at least 1 quart of water; Dogs are welcome but must be fit enough for the hike, bring water for them; contact hike leader Debbie Lane 775-350-9949, cell or text for more information)

All aboard! The Virginia and Truckee kicks off its season of Steam Train rides to Virginia City this weekend, you may even see some wild horses. If you’re looking for the thrill of a steam train, but at a more economical price, then seeing the Glenbrook and V and T #25 at the Nevada Railroad Museum is for you.

The Carson Nugget has something cooking for this long weekend, as well. Majestic: San Francisco's Ultimate Tribute to Journey will be playing two shows tonight in their upstairs Ballroom. Take the kids to a concert of their own this afternoon: Purly Gates will be performing a toe-tapping Cowboy Concert at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada.

Today we honor those who have not only served, but who gave all in defense of our country. A tribute ceremony at the Lone Mountain Cemetery for our Nevadan veterans will begin at 1 p.m. A memorial for our Native American veterans begins at 10 a.m. at the cemetery across the street from the Stewart Indian School. The Tenth annual BBQ at Evergreen Gene’s welcomes all comers, and veterans will get 25% any of the fun things they find in the shop.

The unpredictability of spring this first weekend of May continues with the threat of snow showers in the Sierra on Saturday, along with gusty winds and rain down to the valley floors for Carson City and surrounding areas. The storm system should moved out by Sunday morning.

Carson High School Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Education students competed at the three-day state conference last month for Nevada Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. This was the first time the school’s programs participated in the conference. A total of 25 students competed in eight events.

More than 48 Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students attended the state conference in Sparks, Nev. this past week. In total, 38 of those students earned 74 “Top-10” placements in 30 separate events. Additionally, three CHS FBLA students took state with first-place finishes and 15 of them qualified for the National Business Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. this coming June.
