V&T train rides, pumpkin patch, Scandinavian festival, hikes, fundraisers and more: Carson City region set for eventful weekend
Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the final V&T Railway train rides of the 2019 season, the 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary School, fundraisers around town, coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum, comedy at the Carson Nugget and more!

Here's a rundown of what is happening over the next three days:
Friday, October 11
— V&T Railway ends season this weekend with steam, 150th anniversary and Toast of the Canyon train rides (all day). V&T Railway will bring its event-filled 2019 season to a close this weekend with a final 150th Anniversary train on Friday, Oct. 11, vintage steam trains on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 and a Toast of the Canyon spirits train on Saturday, Oct. 12 following the steam train. The Carson City to Virginia City trains will depart Carson City’s Eastgate Depot at 10 a.m., arriving in Virginia City at 11:30 a.m. and returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m. The Toast of the Canyon train takes place immediately following the steam train’s return, beginning at 4:15 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the V&T Railway website or call (877) 724-5007.
— Muscle Powered Friday Morning Walk at the Carson River. 9 a.m. Meet at Carson River Park, 5013 Carson River Road. Dirt trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.
— Work For Warriors Nevada to host Law Enforcement and 1st Responder Career Fair. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Idlewild Park in the California Building in Reno. Work For Warriors Nevada is set to host its Law Enforcement and First Responder Career Fair in Reno at Idlewild Park in the California Building on Friday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. There will be an Opening Ceremony address by Nevada National Guard brigadier general and the Reno Police Department officer Zachary Doser at the James D. Hoff Peace Officers Memorial at 9 a.m.
— Coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.
— Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. A Premiere library card is required to attend.
— Meet and Greet planned for new Carson City Library Director. 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. The Friends of the Carson City Library, with the library board and staff, are offering a meet and greet with the new library director, Tod Colegrove, on Friday, October 11 from 4:30p.m. to 6 p.m. No RSVP is required to meet the new director. Those interested should simply head over to the library digitorum located at 900 N. Roop St. for an opportunity to get to know Colegrove more over coffee and a treat.
— Paint it Positively Pink. 5:30 p.m. at the Carson Valley Arts Center. This exciting arts event is a fundraiser for local breast cancer patients. The cost is $55 per person. Proceeds go toward the Carson Valley Medical Center Hospital Foundation.
— Historian to give talks on 'Henry VIII,' 'Panama Canal' at WNC's Carson City observatory. 6:30 p.m. at 2699 Vanpatten Drive in Carson City. Mike Thomas will step outside North America for his October presentations at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City. On Friday, Oct. 11, Thomas will talk about “Henry VIII,” the infamous King of England who was married six times in an effort to forge political alliances and produce a healthy male heir, all while eliminating the Pope's power over the Church of England.
— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 to 9:00ish.
— CHS Theater Aims High: 'Peter and the Starcatcher' opens at Community Center. 7 p.m. at 851 E. William Street. See the backstory of Peter Pan and how he learned to fly as Carson High School Theatre Arts presents "Peter and the Starcatcher," opening this Friday at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center. This hilarious play, written by Rick Elice, and based on a book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, is the prequel to the beloved story of "Peter Pan." Learn how Peter and Captain Hook became enemies, who taught Peter to fly, and the creation of the story everyone loves.
— Carson Valley Community Theater presents 'Lullabies of Broadway'. 7:30 p.m. at 1572 Hwy 395 in Minden. Carson Valley Community Theater will present the musical "Lullabies of Broadway" Oct. 11-13 in Minden. Don't miss this tribute to Broadway, brought to you by a talented group of local artists, and volunteers, who are looking forward to bringing this musical to you. You don't have to be a Rich Man to afford an evening of your favorite musical theater hits. Carson Valley Community Theatre’s latest cabaret show, "Lullabies of Broadway," plays the weekend of Oct. 11-13.
— Jen Murphy at the Carson Comedy Club. 8 p.m. at 507 N. Carson Street. This Friday and Saturday, Comedian Jen Murphy will be performing at The Carson Comedy Club in Carson City! Jen Murphy is a nationally touring comedian with an innocent look and sharp wit. Her side-splitting delivery has landed her headlining gigs at comedy clubs and festivals across the country! She has a half hour special called “This is Why You’re Still Single,” that’s aired on the TLC network. Doors open at 7:15 p.m.
— Hauntober returns to Virginia City. Throughout the month of October, Virginia City will be hosting several events to shine light on its spooky past. Virginia City boasts its notoriety of being one of the three most haunted towns in the United States, along with Savannah and Charleston. Otherworldly “haunts” exist during Halloween as Virginia City celebrates its ghostly history and offers a month of ghost experiences. Want to have your own paranormal experience? See the places and feel the chill with Bats in the Belfry Ghost Tours, or jump on board the V & T Railroad Halloween train for a spooky trip.
Saturday, October 12

— Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. Come on down for some fun at the market! You never know what you will find at the flea market. Many vendors to choose from with arts, crafts, antiques, jewelry and so much more. Open Sat. October. 12..8-3 and Sun. 9-3.. Admission is $1 for adults and kids under 18 are free. — Registration open for early childhood professional development conference at WNC. 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in WNC’s Bristlecone Building, 2201 W. College Parkway. Early childhood professionals will have the opportunity for professional development on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Two training sessions are offered: 8:15-10:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m
— Carson Nugget, Food For Thought team up for children's winter coat drive. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 3246 North Carson Street. Carson Nugget and the Carson City based Food for Thought organization are hosting a coat drive for children now through Nov. 15. Organizers of this drive are asking for donations of new coats, for children ages 5 to 18, which will be distributed to children at the Kids Christmas Brunch, to be held Dec. 23 at the Carson Nugget Grand Ballroom.
— 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch this Saturday at Seeliger Elementary. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2800 Saliman Rd. Celebrating nearly three decades of turning the round, orange members of the squash family into memorable Halloween carving traditions, Seeliger Elementary School in Carson City will host its 27th annual Pumpkin Patch this Saturday, Oct. 12.
— Donovan Mill guided history walk featured at Dayton State Park. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Meet at the northwest corner of the Gold Ranch Casino, across from Dayton State Park in Dayton, NV. Dayton is located 12 miles east of Carson City, NV on U.S. Highway 50. Join park staff for a guided hike from the Rock Point Mill at Dayton State Park to the historic Donovan Mill in Silver City. Advance reservations are required for this hike and are limited to 20 people.
— Carson City Moose Lodge to host Fall Poker Run. 10 a.m. at 1475 Old Hot Springs Rd. Proceeds benefit Moose Charities and the Carson City Moose Lodge to help support our community. There's no better feeling than making a difference in the lives of children, seniors and communities.
— Scandinavian Festival comes to Carson City. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Family, 1201 Saliman Road. The 12th Annual Scandinavian Festival brings the rich traditions of Norwegian history and culture to Carson City on Saturday, Oct 12. Demonstrations of traditional food and music along with examples of the traditional “Bunad” clothing. Great baked goods and the classic Norwegian open-faced sandwiches are among the fair for lunch. Traditional Nordic music will be performed the Carson City Symphony Youth Strings.
— Carson City Lions Club to host annual White Can Days fundraiser. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walmart near East College Parkway. Members of the Carson City Host Lions Club will gather at the WalMart near East College Parkway on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day to bring awareness to the public of the sight preservation programs the Lions support, and to raise funds as part of the annual White Cane Days. Lions will provide information about vision preservation programs available, increase awareness of the white cane traffic safety laws, and collect used eyeglasses for distribution to those in need.
— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Pumpkins + Bingo = PINGO!. 1 to 3 p.m. at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Pumpkins plus Bingo = PINGO! Join us Saturday, Oct. 12 for two lively, all ages Bingo sessions to win pumpkins and more. The event is at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. — Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. — Victorian Tea Party fundraiser. 1 to 4 p.m. at the Governor's Mansion, 606 N. Mountain Street.

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.
— Carson Mall Wine Walk. 2 to 6 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Come sip and shop at the Carson Mall! New walkers $10, returning walkers $5. You will receive a wine glass which is yours to keep! Davis Observatory, 2699 Vanpatten Ave. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. Mike Thomas lectures 2nd Saturdays and Dr. Tom Herring lectures on 4th Saturdays.
— RoseBud's Dance Band Masquerade Ball. 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King Street. The Rose Buds Dance Band presents the Masquerade Ball at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City on Saturday, Oct. 12. Get ready to have a great time with a live 18-piece band. Masks and costumes are optional but if you don’t wear one you may not win the costume contest!

— October Full Moon Hike up Prison Hill. 8:30 to 10 p.m. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host its October Full Moon Hike up Prison Hill on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 8:30 to 10 p.m., with the trail lit by the light of the moon. Those who are interested should meet at the new Prison Hill 5th Street Trailhead on the corner of Carson River Road and 5th Street, and make sure to bring clothing layers, water, a flashlight or headlamp, and hiking shoes.
