The Carson City and Quad-County region is experiencing a downward trend of COVID-19 hospitalizations since the start of the new year. However, while rates of transmission for children and teenagers have remained low since the pandemic began, new reporting shows a significant increase in minors contracting the virus, according to statistics.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Between a global pandemic, protests over racial injustice and a highly contentious presidential election, firearm sales in Nevada spiked in 2020, with the first 10 months of gun sales already 57 percent greater than all gun sales made in 2019.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance with locating a missing person. Frank Figearo was last seen in mid-October 2020, leaving his motel room in Carson City, Nevada. Mr. Figearo allegedly told a neighbor he was traveling out of state for business.

Carson City employment figures for November remained unchanged since October 2020 with the trade, transportation, and utilities sector growing the most by 100 jobs, according to a Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation monthly employment report.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation announced Thursday it has started borrowing money from the federal government to help ensure Nevada residents who are eligible for regular unemployment benefits continue to receive payments without interruption during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

MINDEN — The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners’ installed an “In God We Trust” Display in the Board Chamber. At the October 3, 2019, Board meeting, the County Commissioners' approved Resolution 2019R-061 supporting the display of the national motto in the Board Chambers.

CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada increased over the month by 9,200 jobs as the State continues to recover. Jobs remain below typical levels; Nevada has 109,500 fewer jobs than in November 2019, for an annual job growth rate of -7.7 percent according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s November 2020 economic report.

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced on Sunday that he is extending current coronavirus health and safety restrictions for another month and putting in place a new moratorium on evictions through the end of March.

Carson Valley is putting on a show, and we don’t just mean our glorious Fall colors! The Carson Valley Arts Council is hosting the first annual Carson Valley Art Studio Tour next October 2021, and they are seeking input from interested fine artists at this time. All fine art media will be considered, and shared studio space will be coordinated by the CVAST team.

For the week ending December 5, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 8,783, up 2,341 claims, or 36.3 percent, compared to the previous week’s total of 6,442 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). This is only the second increase in regular initial claims activity since October 24. Through the week ending December 5, there have been a total of 783,384 initial claims filed in 2020, 761,732 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

Rallies and protests that began earlier this year have continued taking place in Nevada’s capital city since the election, and some citizens continue to show up carrying firearms. But what is the legality of these actions? Where do well-established open and concealed carry rights give way to legally questionable militia activity and intimidation?

In October, This Is Reno published a story about the increasing prevalence of armed militia groups in the state following the release of a report done in collaboration between national nonprofit Political Research Associates and local progressive groups Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada and Indivisible Northern Nevada.

With the assistance of the Tri-NET Narcotic Task Force, Special Enforcement Team and the Detective Bureau an investigation was conducted which has led to the recovery of the stolen solar panels and some of the equipment.

In our region, as well as in many areas across the country, there have been massive spikes in COVID-19 transmissions over the past few months. Even as restaurants and bars were reopened, daily positive cases were generally staying within single digits inside the Quad-County region.

However, between October and December, both test positivity rates as well as overall cases — and deaths — have seen a massive increase. Local health organizations are now not only fighting against the disease, but against misinformation campaigns as well.

MINDEN — The U.S. Navy Blue Angels have announced they will be returning to the Aviation Roundup Airshow at the Minden-Tahoe Airport for the 2022 Airshow.

MINDEN — The Douglas County Planning Commission completed its work to review and update the 2020 Master Plan text and published a draft to the Douglas County website for the public to review and comment.

CARSON CITY — The Silver State added back 3,600 jobs, or 0.3 percent since September 2020. When compared to October 2019, jobs are still down by 117,200, or -8.2 percent, for a current total of 1,305,300 jobs, according to a the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s October 2020 economic report.

CARSON CITY — More than eight months into the Nevada guard’s support of the battle against COVID-19, the stubborn microscopic enemy showed no sign of surrender as many of the state’s counties reported record number of cases in late fall.

Carson City and Carson Valley gaming revenue was up in October by nearly 2 percent compared to October 2019, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

For the week ending November 14, initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) totaled 7,243, down 313 claims, or 4.1 percent, compared to last week’s total of 7,556 claims, according to finalized data from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR). Through the week ending November 14, there have been 760,038 initial claims filed in 2020, 738,386 of which have been filed since the week ending March 14.

MINDEN, Nev. — The Nevada COVID Task Force notified Douglas County that they are flagged for elevated COVID-19 disease transmission. Douglas County saw a spike in infection rates back in July, but then numbers declined for several months.

The Nevada COVID Task Force has notified Lyon County that they are to remain flagged for elevated COVID test positivity rates. October 12, 2020 Lyon County saw a test positivity of 8.2 percent and has experienced an increase week after week since then. As of Monday, Lyon County sits at a rate of 19.0 percent.

Paul Donald Hochsprung, born Oct. 21, 1953, passed away at Carson Tahoe Hospital with his wife at his side on March 23, 2020, after a recent diagnosis of metastatic melanoma.
