Jed Block to Present 'Now and Then: A Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes'

Jed Block will present a slideshow/talk on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Carson City Library. The title of the talk is "Now and Then: a Pictorial Analysis of Carson City Changes." Mr. Block has collected numerous pictures of Carson City's Carson Street and downtown area from earlier periods, such as the 1950s and 1960s, and compares them to recent photos of the same locations. These comparisons reveal a lot about the history of Carson City and the colorful people who shaped its future. The event is free and open to the public.

It might have looked very much like the work of Michael Holcomb, an artist whose images are on view at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center Gallery West, May 14th through June 22nd.

Beer & Brats Fundraiser

The annual Carson Girls Softball fundraiser for the Sharks Tournament Softball teams will be held on May 18th for 6PM to 9PM at the Fuji Park Exhibition hall. For a $20.00 donation you will get all you can eat bratwurst and all you can drink beer! There will be a silent auction, raffle and door prizes from local business plus it’s a great time. Greenhouse Project Plant Sale

Carson City’s Greenhouse Project will hold a plant and yard sale on Saturday, May 19th from 8am to noon. Several varieties of seedlings and small plants will be available including tomatoes, peppers and petunias. The Greenhouse opened in December 2011, these plants are the first crops grown in the facility. There will also be a yard sale of donated items including restaurant supplies and household items. All money raised will benefit the Greenhouse Project.

The Greenhouse Project is located on the campus of Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman in Carson City.

Carson City Sheriff's Office Open House

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will be hosting their ninth annual Sheriff's Open House from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at their location at 911 E. Musser St. There will be free food while supplies last, a free child ID kit for every child present, and free activities for children of all ages. Dime-a-dance USO-style party

In honor of Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents a USO-style “dime-a-dance” party to honor veterans and servicepeople May 19 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. There will be a lesson at 7 p.m., with the social dance at 8-10:30 p.m. Men may purchase tickets for 10 cents a dance (or 12 tickets for $1). Between 8 and 9 p.m., each time you dance with a different woman, give her a ticket, which will be entered into a 9 p.m. drawing for raffle prizes.

Carson City children need CASA Volunteers!

CASA of Carson City will hold an Information Hour on May 21, 5:30pm, at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 E. 5th St. Carson City. CASA volunteers are appointed for to speak up for the best interest of children removed from their parents custody due to abuse or neglect. Being a CASA volunteer requires research, communication, patience and caring. It is rewarding and challenging. CASA volunteers make a difference for kids.
