In a continuing series of profiles, Soroptimist International of Carson City welcomes the community join us in congratulating 2021 “Women Helping Women” honoree Katie Leao Geiser, who is among eight Carson City area women to be honored at our Feb. 18 virtual event.

Seniors Eating Well is a free online nutrition class for seniors. The series of nine lessons offered through Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties begins on February 2, 2021 and ends on March 2, 2021.

As part of a series of profiles, Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to introduce Tiffany Kenison as one of our 2021 “Women Helping Women” honorees, who will be recognized at our Feb. 18 virtual recognition event.

Students from all four classes recently nominated Carson High School Winterfest candidates for 2021 Winterfest week, Feb. 1-5, where both a King and Queen will be crowned. The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

Join us once a month to relax through art! Every month we will explore a different technique to use art to help de-stress. For the month of January, we will be making handwoven potholders. Registration is required. Zoom link will be sent out morning of the program.

The next Carson City School District board of trustees meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 26 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Robert “Bob” Crowell Board Room at the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Items to be discussed include policy changes, ACT test scores, teacher recognitions, and more.

The Rotary Club of Carson City will discuss the history and early settlement of the Mormon Station in Genoa at its next meeting. Park interpreter Chris Johnson is the guest speaker, his presentation will focus on the development of Mormon Station and what life was like for early settlers.

Carson City Symphony Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Richard “Ricky” Hutton as Director of Carson Chamber Singers. His connection with the Carson Chamber Singers goes back to the summer of 2019, when he directed the Singers in the June Pops Party concert in Carson City and the July 4th concert in Genoa.

CARSON CITY — With intersection improvements already scheduled for coming years at two Mt. Rose Highway intersections, the Nevada Department of Transportation will launch a virtual public meeting on Jan. 26 to gather public feedback on corridor planning to define future traffic improvements to the lower segment of the highway.

Nevada Health Link, the online health insurance marketplace operated by the state agency, the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange (Exchange), reminds Nevadans that Open Enrollment for a comprehensive, Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliant health plan for 2021 ends at 11:59 p.m. today, Jan. 15, 2021.

Consumers who enroll by the deadline will have coverage effective February 1, 2021.

Get an insider’s look at what to expect during Nevada’s 2021 Legislative Session at the next Rotary Club of Carson City’s weekly meeting. Nevada Humanities has announced the book selections for its statewide 2021 Nevada Reads program. Nevada Reads will feature two memoirs — Miracle Country: A Memoir by Kendra Atleework, and World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

CARSON CITY — The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada will host a virtual community meeting on Jan. 23 from 10 am to noon. The meeting will tell the story of the fight for women’s suffrage starting with the history of the beginning of women’s battle to get the vote in America.

The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday Jan. 12 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Bob Boldrick Theater within the Carson City Community Center.

CARSON CITY — The military support organization Work for Warriors Nevada is set to host a no-cost, virtual job fair on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The fair will be online.

Jacqueline Milagros Acosta-Bruno was born Nov. 17, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., to Claudia Bruno and Hector Acosta. She has four younger brothers and sisters, all attending Carson City Schools, as well as a sibling just 18-months-old.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to announce our “Women Helping Women” Honorees to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls in our community, at our Virtual “Celebrating Women Helping Women” Recognition Event, via Zoom, on February 18, 2021 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

Featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon will be Patrick Donnelly, Nevada State Director of the Center for Biological Diversity. Among other things he will touch on the hydrology and endangered species of the Amargosa Basin and explain why Yucca Mountain is a terrible place to store high-level nuclear waste.
