Move Saves Atlantis Approximately $6K/Month

CARSON CITY, Nev.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Until recently, Reno’s Atlantis Casino Resort Spa leased secure warehouse space for storing administrative documents and gaming receipts. When it came time to destroy outdated documents, they hired a shredding service to come in about once a month to perform secure document destruction. In an ongoing effort to save costs and increase efficiency, the casino looked at other options and services.

Local students win scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union

Sixteen Northern Nevada high school graduates were recently awarded $1000 scholarships from Greater Nevada Credit Union. Over 100 students applied for the program which the Credit Union has offered to local students for the past decade.

2nd Annual Concert Under the Stars, Carson City Greenhouse Project Benefit

The summer heats up with the 2nd annual “Concert Under the Stars” July 14th behind Adele’s Restaurant and Lounge in Carson City. Proceeds benefit Carson City’s Greenhouse Project. “Sons of Champlin” will headline the event. Led by former Chicago singer and band member Bill Champlin, the Sons are one of the pioneering bay area bands from the 1960s music scene and continue to rock audiences today. Rock Club Discovered Forming In Carson Valley

"There oughta be a rock club a little closer to home." There has certainly been a lot of talk about it; now it's time to get a rock club going in the Carson Valley.

We're from all walks of life: rock-hounds, students, teachers, geologists. We plan to do several kinds of fun things, including show and tell, "how to" sessions, swap meets and shows, field trips, exploration, prospecting, crafting, jewelry classes.

Wildlife advisory board member sought

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Wildlife Advisory Board. The Committee manages wildlife matters within Carson City. The meetings vary in number, usually with the onset of fishing and hunting seasons, and could involve up to six hours a month.There is one opening for a three-year term, expiring July 2013.

Dance the hula, make a lei at museum

In honor of the Hawaiian tradition of celebrating Lei Day on Saturday, the Children's Museum will have hula lessons provided by Carson City's hula dance group, Kaulana Na Pua O Hula.Come practice your hula, and learn how to make a lei that you can take home. Kids also can make Mother's Day cards.Hula lessons will be from 11 a.m. to noon, and lei making from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both programs are free with admission.

Dispose prescription drugs safely at roundup

In response to a surge in prescription drug abuse, Partnership Carson City and the Healthy Communities Coalition in Lyon County are urging residents to safely dispose of their unused and expired prescription drugs during a community-wide roundup on May 8.The roundup will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the three Save-Mart locations in Carson City and at Lyon County senior centers in Dayton, Silver Springs, Fernley and Yerington.Law officers will be on hand at those locations to receive the drugs.

Renewable energy talk Thursday

The Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy Commercialization will stage a "fireside chat" Thursday evening in Incline Village. The event, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in room 139 of Sierra Nevada College, 999 Tahoe Blvd., will feature a discussion with Jim Croce, president and CEO of NIREC, about green energy and economic growth. There also will be a tour of the Tahoe Center for Environment Sciences - the state's first LEED Platinum certified building and a discussion of other green initiatives at the campus.

Carson City Arbor Day 2010 Celebration

The Carson City Shade Tree Council will be hosting its annual Arbor Day Celebration on April 30, 2010. The celebration will be held in the park across from the State Library on the corner of Stewart and Musser Streets and will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is scheduled to last an hour.

CTRH Auxiliary awards nursing scholarships

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary at a recent luncheon, awarded 10 $1,000 nursing scholarships for 2010.To be eligible for the scholarships, students must be accepted in the nursing program at WNC, enrolled full time and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. Girl Scouts helping pets find homes

Education: Local students make honor roll at Oregon State University

Names of students who have made the Scholastic Honor Roll Winter term have been announced by Oregon State University. A total of 624 students earned straight-A's (4.0). Another 3,028 earned a B-plus (3.5) average or better to make the listing.To be on the Honor Roll, students must carry at least 12 graded hours of course work. Carson man donates scholarships

Carson City resident Joseph B. Allegretti and his wife, Helen, donate two University of Portland scholarships, a Catholic university in Oregon, to honor a victim of Haiti earthquake Allegretti, an investment manager and land developer with Allegretti & Company, announced the scholarships recently at an awards luncheon at the university. University alumni Molly Hightower, a 2009 graduate who died in the recent Haiti earthquake while working at a children's orphanage, was recognized.

Rescue group needs handy volunteers

Wylie Animal Rescue Foundation (WARF) is in need of handy volunteers to help refurbish cat scratching posts to benefit cats in need in the Carson and Minden area.Supplies will be provided and volunteers can work on the posts at home.WARF consists of small group of volunteers dedicated to rescuing companion animals in imminent danger of euthanasia. They host cat and kitten adoptions on Saturdays at Petco on Topsy Lane.

Traveling Body Exhibit at museum

An event Saturday at the Children's Museum will include a traveling body exhibit that features a pumping heart, a chemistry lab, vision testing, a station where children are taught to call 911, child fingerprinting and a nurse on hand to answer questions. Disabled Vet Poker Run this weekend

The Carson City and Reno Disabled American Veterans chapters will host their third annual Poker Run on Saturday. Nevada State Museum hosts artist Thursday night

The Nevada State Museum will host Native American artist Lillian Pitt at 7 p.m. Thursday for a presentation of "She Who Remembers." Lillian's work is featured in Rock Art Perspectives: Pictographs and Petroglyphs, on display in the South Changing Gallery through May 1. The sculptor and mixed media artist works in clay, bronze, wearable art, prints, and glass.

March for Babies to take place May 1

Hundreds of people will be participating in March for Babies, the largest fundraising event for March of Dimes, to be held in Reno/-Sparks, Carson City and Elko.March for Babies in Carson City will be May 1 at Mills Park. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with the start at 9 a.m. The events will be a celebration of families, friends and co-workers who have raised money to support March of Dimes research in finding causes for premature births so that one day, all babies will be born healthy.

Carson area celebrates Easter starting today

From cheering on your kids in the annual egg hunt, to shaking hands with the governor, Easter events abound. The festivities begin today at Tumbleweeds Gymnastics Kids Camp & Kaia F.I.T. in Minden. Summer online class to explore computer security

It's not too soon to think summer. WNC's 2010 summer class schedule is now available online at www.wnc.edu/academics/schedule/ and some valuable career skills are being taught in the area of computer security. Computer Forensics is a three-credit, online class to help students learn the fundamentals of conducting a computer investigation. It introduces setting up a forensics lab, conducting an investigation and recording evidence.
