Bluegrass and Punk and Celtic: oh my! Three music festivals highlight Saturday’s events in Carson City

Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! Today we’ve got a ton of great events, including three separate music festivals at Shoe Tree Brewing Co., Bowers Mansion, and the Brewery Arts Center!

Saturday, August 17

— 34th Annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival returns this weekend (all day). The 34th annual Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival is back this weekend from Aug. 16-18 beginning with the Rattlesnake Mountain Boys kicking things off at the Davis Creek Amphitheater at 7 p.m. on Friday. Bluegrass bands both national and local will convene at the historic mansion along with kids activities, food trucks, games, and more! Attendees should bring low-backed chairs or picnic blankets to enjoy, and spots are on a first-come first-serve basis.

— Muscle Powered Monthly Trash Mob to clean up historic Virginia and Truckee Trail. 8 a.m. on Arrowhead Drive just off Highway 50. Join Muscle Powered for its monthly Trash Mob, with the next mob meetup set to cleanup the Historic Virginia & Truckee Trail. Learn about this newest Rail Trail, what the plans are and what you can do to support it. We'll clean up the multi-use path along Highway 50 from Arrowhead Drive west in Carson City. Look for the Muscle Powered flag.

— Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fuji Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. Come and shop for your hidden treasures st the flea market, always a good time with many vendors to choose from. There are antiques, collectibles, art, jewelry and lots of handcrafted items. Located at 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. In Carson City and open on Sat. From 8-4 and Sun. 9-4. Admissions is $1 for adults and kids under 18 free. — Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces. This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

— Jazz and Beyond Music Festival featuring Catfish Carl. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. Catfish Carl will be performing at the Carson Farmers Market. More information can be found online or by calling 775-883-4154.

– Brooke Santina to speak at Dangberg Home Ranch. The event is located at 1450 State Route Hwy 88 in Minden. All my life, I’ve wished that there was something special, I could offer the world but nothing about me was unique. Then I went to the police academy and got a job working in a jail, and I found people fascinated by stories of even my most mundane experiences, which gave me an idea. My novel, “Dishrags to Dirt Bags”, is my offering, truly a book nobody else could write, based on my knowledge of the police world and desire to empower others to take a chance. I hope you enjoy it.

— Car wash at Carson High School to benefit CHS Girls and Boys Soccer Program. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1111 N. Saliman Road. Are you in need of a good car cleaning? Come to Carson High School on Saturday, August 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and support the Carson High School Girls and Boys Soccer Program. Pre-sale is $5 a vehicle. At the car wash, it is $7 to $10 depending on the size of the vehicle. Carson High School is located at 1111 N. Saliman Road.

— Carson City salon hosts third annual 'Kutz 4 Kids'. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1501 E. 5th Street Suite 201. Twisted Scizzors Salon in Carson City is hosting our 3rd annual Kutz 4 kids haircut event. The salon will be collecting donations of school supplies and ask that everyone bring something so we can divide them between the schools here in Carson City. We believe that every child should start the school year off feeling confident in themselves. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible this year.

— Explore the Metallic Acrylic Pour at Rustically Divine. 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 410 N. Carson Street. Explore the Metallic Acrylic Pour at Rustically Divide in Carson City on Saturday, August 17. Dana Childs, aka, dLauren teaches you how to create modern-abstract fluid effects with acrylic pouring onto stretched canvas. The class is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. is $45, and includes supplies. Rustically Divine is located at 410 N Carson St Suite 101, Carson City.

— Dayton State Park features 'Once Upon a Trail: Whose Tracks are These?'. 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Dayton State Park. Join park staff and River Wranglers for a fun-filled, family-friendly morning as they read the children’s book Whose Tracks are These? while discussing local wildlife such as bats, snakes, beavers and birds. Participants will go for a short walk to the Carson River to look for signs of wildlife and then make their own plaster animal tracks to take home! This program was funded by the Bessie Minor Swift Foundation. We suggest bringing a picnic and having lunch in the park after the program!

— Carson City Park Ranger Speaks Series: Local Plant Identification. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Silver Saddle Ranch. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host a series of environmental education events free to the public at Silver Saddle Ranch. Learn about the topics below from a Park Ranger from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. No registration necessary and all ages welcome.

— Send a Scout to Camp Car Show. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fuji Park. This event is a fundraiser for Boy Scouts of America Troop 33 and will feature food by Warren Engine Company No. 1, a live auction, vendors and participant awards. Registration is open to any year car and/or truck.

— 1870 mint building tour. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson Street. Tour led by Curator of History Robert Nylen. Tours at 10:00 and 1:30. Space is limited, first come first serve. Tour sign up on the 17th.

— U.S. Naval Sea Cadet youth to hold car wash fundraiser in Dayton. 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Valero, 215 U.S. Hwy 50. Carson City Division, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is having a Car Wash Fundraiser in Dayton, Nev. at Valero, 215 US-50 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 17. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corp is a federally chartered, non-profit youth organization, which offers a nautically oriented training program for young Americans, ages 10-18.

— Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

— 2019 Artisans and Antiques Festival in Gardnerville. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at at 1235 Eddy Street in the Gardnerville District. Gardnerville, Nevada’s only vintage pop-up shop for their 5th Annual Artisans & Antiques Festival. This year’s outdoor festival is Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 1235 Eddy Street in the heart of the Main Street Gardnerville District. The event includes 55+ local vendors featuring a variety of handmade items, vintage furniture and decor. Plus, an array of delicious food and drinks will be available for your stroll down Eddy Street.

— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

— Mint 150 lecture at the Nevada State Museum. The lecture runs from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The lecture will be presented by Robert Nylen. No reservations are required for interested participants.

– Art Party in Dayton. 12 to 3:30 p.m. at Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Ave. It's Art Party Time! We'll bring all the tools needed to have a successful art party. If you have never painted before, then this is perfect for you! If you're a seasoned artist, try something new. The event is easy, fun, affordable and provides activities for all ages. — Mills Park train rides. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson City Railroad Association (CCRA) maintains and operates Carson City’s only Narrow Gauge Railroad and Model Railroad Club. The narrow gauge railroad is approximately 1.5 miles long and runs throughout Mills Park, with a duration of about 10 minutes. The two indoor model railroads are a HO and N gauge railroad, located in the CCRA train station at the east end of the park. Train rides are $2 per passenger, and free for children under 2 years old.

— Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 12 to 4 p.m. Demonstration takes place in the Historic Carson City Mint building. For more information, contact Robert Nylen at 775-687-4810 ext. 245.

— Everything Sucks Fest at Shoe Tree Brewing Company. 12 to 7 p.m. at 1496 Old Hot Springs Rd. Everything Sucks Fest 2019 is a music fest for the rest of us. All ages are welcome. Performers include: Jonny Manak and the Depressives, Black Crosses, Protected Left, Donkey Jaw, Heterophobia, Last 1 Down and Tim O’Laughlin.

— Saturday beginning wheel throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

— Fashion show for nonprofit Pets of Homeless at Governor's Mansion. 1:30 p.m. at 606 Mountain Street. A fashion show sponsored by DV8 Salon Studio to benefit Pets Of The Homeless will be presented at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City on Saturday, August 17 at 1:30 p.m. Trendy and unique fashions will be featured by Stein Mart with hair and make up being done by DV8 Salon studio, with guest makeup artist Regina Wolford from “Wake up with Make up.”

— Lego Club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— Jazz and Beyond Music Festival featuring The Jazzettes. 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. The Jazzettes will be performing. More information can be found online or by calling 775-883-4154.

— Carson Valley Truck and Tractor Pull. 4 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 920 Pinenut Rd. Come on over to the Douglas County Fairgrounds on Saturday to soak in the views of a class truck and tractor pull. Trucks and tractors of all sizes will battle it out in a matchup you don’t want to miss!

— Local nonprofit Carson City schools to provide students with back to school makeover. 5 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 412 W. Musser Street. On Saturday, 10 children from low-income Carson City families will receive back-to-school makeovers as part of the "Cool School Renewal" event put on by Capital City CIRCLES Initiative. The event, "Cool School Renewal," in partnership with the Carson City School District, will provide the children with free haircuts, a shopping trip for back-to-school clothing, as well as access to healthcare all to prepare them for the upcoming school year.

— Jazz and Beyond Music Festival featuring The Red Tango. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom. The Red Tango will be performing. More information can be found online or by calling 775-883-4154.

— Pajama Storytime at the Carson City Library. 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Wear your PJs for a bedtime-themed storytime! Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

— The Wicked Tinkers take over Levitt AMP Carson City outdoor Music Series. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center’s Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater. Only two shows left for Levitt AMP Carson City and this Saturday's show, you don't want to miss. The Wicked Tinkers take the Change Companies stage at 8 p.m. You've seen them on Arrested Development, Craig Ferguson and the Highland Games and now you can see them at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City for free. Opening for the Wicked Tinkers is regional favorite, Ciana, Traditional Celtic Music.
Since 1995, the Wicked Tinkers have been playing ancient rhythms and forgotten sounds — things might have heard hundreds of years ago at a Scottish wedding or Highland riding party — but have reimagined the music for the twenty-first century. The aim to create a sound that is both “ancient and hauntingly familiar” with use of bagpipes, tribal drums, didgeridoos, and Bronze-Age Irish horns paired with a modern, rock-and-roll energy; their music will transport you back in time and get an audience of their feet with a raw, primal, and exciting sound.

— Carson City Ghost Walk returns this Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bob McFadden Plaza. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.

— Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 507 N. Carson St. Live Comedy every Friday and Saturday night at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the Winner's Club or online.

— Art Outside: Sketch and Trek. 9 to 11 a.m. at Kings Canyon Trailhead. Calling all creative adventurers! Join the Parks, Rec & Open Space Dept. on the first Interpretive Program devoted to drawing and hiking. If you’re a skilled artist or a novice, bring your sketchbook out to Kings Canyon and learn different techniques to be able to portray your the natural environment into visual art. Bring your own sketchbook and drawing utensil if you have it, but we will also have paper and pens for folks.

— Foreman-Roberts House Museum open house and tour. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1207 N. Carson Street. The Carson City Historical Society hosts an open house and tour of the Foreman-Roberts House Museum. Highlights of Carson City history and the families that lived in the historic Foreman-Roberts House are presented on a free, docent led tour. After touring the Museum, enjoy light refreshments in the Carriage and view the informative displays. You will see exhibits and artifacts from the Victorian era, the Roberts family and fascinating historical information about Carson City.

— Jazz and Beyond Music Festival featuring A Day at the Ranch. 2 to 7 p.m. at Silver Saddle Ranch. Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival A Day at the Ranch festivities will include: a food truck, Dineen Mule Wagon Rides starting at 2:00 p.m. Sagebrush Rebels will be performing from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., Craig Swope will speak on Silver Saddle Ranch history, Jack DiCarlo will be performing from 4:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sierra Sweethearts will be performing from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. More information can be found online or by calling 775-883-4154.
