Headed into Thursday, April 11, 2019 we welcome Carson City to another day where weather forecasters say there's a chance of rain and maybe even a few snow showers mixed in. Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. — Ronald McDonald dental mobile unit to make stop at Empire Elementary School. 7:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile operated through Nevada Health Centers will stop at elementary school, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, Carson City, today to provide oral healthcare to local youth. Nevada Health Center staff focuses on treatment, education, prevention, and advocacy to children up until the age of 21. The Care Mobile is fully staffed with a dentist, dental assistants and office assistants. Services provided include: Restorative and preventive care, exams, cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, fillings, extractions, x-rays, and oral health education. — April Healthy Communities Meeting Focuses on Coordinated Response to Domestic Violence. 9 a.m. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ April public meeting is on Thursday, April 11, 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center, 2945 Fort Churchill Street. This month, the two hour meeting includes a special one-hour presentation on “Domestic Violence and Coordinated Community Response.” Guest speakers from Lyon County Human Services and Community Chest will cover topics such as the cyclical nature of domestic violence; commonality of domestic violence; and coordinated community response. The emphasis is about the role all stakeholders have in domestic violence response – victim advocates, police, EMT, protection order filings, civil courts, prosecutors, etc.

— Carson City Library Presents: Explore Earth Exhibit. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet, a national traveling exhibition exploring a global view of our changing environment, will be on display at the Carson City Library. Getting people interested in science can be a challenge, but Explore Earth: Our Changing Planet strives to make it fun with a focus on local earth science topic, such as weather, the water cycle and ecosystem changes as well as a global look at our changing planet. 900 North Roop Street.

— Capital City Reads: Carson City Library launches April program with 'Station Eleven.' 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Happening through April. The Carson City Library invites everyone in Carson City to participate in a community read of "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel for the library’s annual Capital City Reads program during the month of April. Capital City Reads is Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library that brings people together through reading and discussion. "Station Eleven" explores the role of arts and culture in creating and keeping the community connections that keep humanity alive after a devastating flu pandemic brings civilization as we know it to an end. This book was chosen to align with this year’s theme for National Library Week: Libraries = Strong Communities. Copies of Station Eleven in English and Spanish will be available at the Carson City Library while supplies last. — Family Storytime at Carson City Library. 10:30 a.m. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.

— Carson City Native and Newcomers Club meets this Thursday. Carson City Native and Newcomers Club invites residents to our club. We meet the second Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. Our next meeting will be held at Red’s Old 395 Grill located 1055 South Carson Street, Carson City. The Club's goal is to serve our community by supporting our schools and organizations that can use our support. Club members have an opportunity to reach out to the blind and serve by punching playing cards in brail that are sent to schools within the United States and abroad. We look forward to your visit.

— Weekly meeting of the Carson City Kiwanis Club. 12 noon. Open to public. Carson City Kiwanis offers opportunity for leadership and involvement in the improvement of our community. We sponsor the Carson High School Key Club and their events. We also offer scholarships to upcoming graduates in both post-secondary education and trade school. — Casting Call Carson City: 'Casino Boss' returns for round 3, locals sought for multiple roles. 2 p.m. Casting call for extras and minor roles for the third episode of locally filmed sitcom "Casino Boss" will be held at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget Casino, 507 N. Carson St., Thursday, April 11, at 2 p.m. Area residents and guests age 21 and over are encouraged to apply. No acting experience is necessary. Roles to be filled include black jack dealers, big players, gourmet food server, model — pretty girl at poker table, “Millennial” and other extras inspired by iconic spy movies of the golden casino era. Episode three of "Casino Boss" will be filmed Friday through Sunday, April 12-14 inside the Carson Nugget. Area residents are invited to sign up on Thursday to be an extra or for one of the open roles. The sitcom, based loosely on the history of the Carson Nugget and the “wacky things that happen in the gaming industry,” has been picked up by Spectrum, Charter, and will also be aired on Reno’s KTVN Channel 2 in May. All Carson City residents ages 21 and older are invited to apply.

— Thursday Hike to Timberline Trail Sponsored by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for their free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet in the dirt area opposite Murphy drive on Combs Canyon Road to carpool to the trailhead. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. In case of bad weather, we will cancel. — Meet the Author: Karen Gedney, M.D. featured at the Brewery Arts Center's Expresso Yourself Cafe. 5:30 p.m. Author of “30 Years Behind Bars”, Karen Gedney, M.D, is an internal medicine specialist who spent almost 30 years behind bars as a prison physician in the Nevada State Prison System. She was designated as one of the best in the business by the American Correctional Association and won a “Heroes for Humanity Award” for her work in HIV in the correctional system. Her true stories documented the journey of a naive young physician who survived a world she was ill-prepared for and turned into a calling. Gedney will discuss her book, answer questions and sign copies of her book. Expresso Yourself Cafe is located inside the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street.

— Carson Douglas Early Childhood Advisory Council invites early childhood professionals to mixer. 5:30 p.m. Are you working with children in the Carson City and Douglas County areas? If so, join us. The Carson Douglas Early Childhood Advisory Council invites you to our first Early Childhood Mixer. Participants will be able to attend training to learn more about local resources for children and families in our area and receive an hour of training from the Nevada Registry. — Carson City's Nevada State Railroad Museum Transcontinental Railroad exhibit event, Brimstone and Bat Guano: The Chemistry of the Comstock. 6 p.m. The completion of the transcontinental railroad in the spring of 1869 changed America forever, dramatically reducing the time and cost for people and goods to move across country and accelerating the western expansion of the industrial revolution. This spring, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will unveil a major new exhibit: “The Transcontinental Railroad: What a Difference it Made.” The exhibit will be in place for the May 10 sesquicentennial of the Golden Spike Ceremony at Promontory Summit in Utah. A number of presentations telling the stories of Nevada’s role in the Transcontinental Railroad are planned this month and in early May at the museum. Thursday's 6 p.m. presentation is: Brimstone and Bat Guano: The Chemistry of the Comstock. Presenter: Chris de Witt, Restoration Shop Supervisor, Nevada State Railroad Museum. He will lead a discussion of the chemical demands of the construction of the transcontinental railroad and how these needs were met. 2180 S Carson St, Carson City.

— The Man With A Thousand Voices, Clint Ingbretson, Returns To Living the Good Life Nightclub, Bistro and Lounge. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Clint will be performing a vast variety of songs exactly as the original artists performed them. Come enjoy an awesome evening of music and the incredible ability of a true magical voice.

— Film Premiere: The Mustang. 7 p.m. at Galaxy Fandango Theater. Filmed in Carson City’s historic Nevada State Prison, "The Mustang" was produced by Robert Redford and stars Bruce Dern and Matthias Schoenaerts. Inspired by true events, The movie follows a violent convict, Roman Coleman (Matthias Schoenaerts) that is given the chance to participate in a rehabilitation therapy program centered around the training of wild mustangs. — Carson High School Presents The Addams Family Musical. 7 p.m. Carson High School proudly presents "The Addams Family musical." Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s ‘normal’ boyfriend and his parents. — Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. 5 to 6:30 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Paiute artist’s work displayed at Nevada Legislature. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Native American artist Melissa Melero-Moose finds inspiration for her mixed media creations from the landscape and culture of the Northern Paiute of the Great Basin.
“Willows, tules, cattails, and pine nuts are all very important staples to the Paiute people, being sources of food, shelter, and implements made with artistic intention,” she said. “I consider these works to be a perspective of my tribe and culture through the eyes of a Native woman, mother and artist.” Melero-Moose’s work is featured in the exhibit, “Translating Paiute,” which went on display Monday, April 8 at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative eXhibition Series (LXS) Gallery inside the Nevada Legislative Building. 401 S Carson Street, Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association 'Spring has Sprung' show underway at the BAC in Carson City. 10 a.m. daily except Mondays. — Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: The Felt Works. Daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public Monday through Friday and will is on display now through May 3. Artist Svea Ferguson, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, created her wall sculptures from common materials found primarily in domestic spaces. She uses vinyl and linoleum flooring materials designed to mimic the appearance of high-end options such as marble, granite, and hardwood at significantly lower costs. These flexible, faux veneers present physical qualities, which allow them to be easily manipulated by the hand, without the need for specialty tools or facilities. The CCAI Courthouse Gallery is located at 885 E Musser St., Carson City.

— Watercolor Exploration classes offered in March and April through WNC's Continuing Education. Whether you are a new or continuing watercolor student, learn to splash and play while discovering the expansive possibilities of watercolor at classes offered through Western Nevada College's Continuing Education program. In each 4-week class, we will explore several different approaches to watercolor. We will also investigate art fundamental topics concentrating on one topic per 4-week session. Students may choose their own subjects, with instructor input as to relevance based on individual skill level. Supplies require. Potential watercolor approaches include: wet-on-dry, wet-into-wet, watercolor pouring, wet-to-dry, layering, pulling-the-bead, alla prima painting, plein air and more. — Carson City group offers support, education to parents with children who have addictions. 6 p.m. Tuesdays. A support group is restarting in Carson City for family members who have loved ones struggling with addictions. The group will meet at a new location on Tuesday nights, 6 p.m. at Partnership Carson City meeting room at 1925 N Carson St. PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved Ones) is a support group of parents helping parents. We meet every week to offer education and support for parents or spouses dealing with an addicted family member. Although PAL has been informally in existence since 2006, we incorporated in Arizona as a non-profit in 2015 in order to help expand PAL nationally. PAL's vision is to make PAL meetings available at no charge to all parents and family members struggling with the addiction of a loved one. PAL is a faith-based Christian organization and our mission is to provide hope to families through education and support. — WNC's Carson City campus offers 8-week research-based stress reduction course. 6 p.m. Western Nevada College’s Continuing Education Department is proud to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at its Carson City campus beginning Tuesday, March 26. This eight-week course uses 30 years of research to help participants develop more capacity to deal with short- and long-term stressors in their lives. The class will meet weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8, with an all-day retreat from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 4. The cost is $365. The tools offered in the course will teach students how to approach life with more composure, energy, understanding and enthusiasm, and can also help participants develop the ability to manage and reduce pain levels. Through weekly homework, students will improve their focus, resilience and capacity to recover more quickly from life’s challenges. The course is taught by Heather Haslem, a national board-certified health and wellness coach and qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher. — Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, March 29, 5-7 p.m. in the Sierra Room, and the artist will give a brief talk about his photography at 5:30 p.m. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— Carson City kindergarten registration begins. The Carson City School District is asking parents to begin registering children who will be 5-years-old by Sept. 30, 2019, and eligible for Kindergarten for the coming 2019-2020 school year. Full-day Kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools in Carson City.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
