Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 01/18/2021 - 1:40pmLike Will Rogers, I'm not a member of any organized political party. I'm an OLTACer, as in Old Lake Tahoe Athletic Club, "Old" being the operative word. Yes, we are 10 members strong, and our good-natured motto is, "I don't give a (fill in the blank with your own inappropriate word) what you think."

Looking To Sell? Neutralize Your Home
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/14/2021 - 3:08pmIn looking to sell a home quickly and as painlessly as possible, the home seller must go through a process of removing the owner’s (or tenants’) presence from the house. This process is known in the real estate industry as “neutralization.” A more appropriate moniker for neutralization is “depersonalizing.”

Fear and Hate v Happiness and Love (opinion)
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 11/11/2020 - 11:18amLet go of your fear and hate to discover what you love. One should not let what they hate, blind them to what they love. Like Jefferson, I love life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in that order. Though I do hate murder and slavery I do not let it define what I love. Though Life and Liberty are defined by the Constitution in America, the pursuit of happiness is an individual choice.
Pine Nuts with McAvoy Layne: Civic grace, public good and a life of purpose
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 11/09/2020 - 11:45amHobbes was wrong. Life is not nasty, brutish and short. Life is nasty, and brutish, but long enough to embrace civic grace, public good and a life of purpose. By coming together in 2021 we can turn a horse chestnut into a chestnut horse, and join Dinah Washington in singing, "This bitter earth may not be so bitter after all."

Northern Nevada outdoor gardening: Freezing temperatures and the irrigation dilemma
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 10/25/2020 - 7:11amIt’s the annual conundrum. Is it too soon to turn off the irrigation system? With recent nights down to the teens here in Washoe Valley, we turned off the irrigation system and drained it prior to the forthcoming hard freezes. Then we turned off the outside water and drained the hose bibs too. Yet with temperatures last week back in the 60s with low to mid-30s at night, I’m sure I will have to irrigate again soon.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Lane: Surviving after being flushed down a storm drain
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 07/13/2020 - 11:30amI've never had to worry about illnesses, because I've always known how I was going to die. I would step into an open manhole while out running and get swept out to sea, however that's not likely to happen because I'm no longer running. But it did happen to a Brazilian girl last week, and she lived to tell about it.

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 06/01/2020 - 7:48amTravel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Pine Nuts with McAvoy Lane: A short history of farmers only online dating
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 05/25/2020 - 6:12amFarmers have always been the world's busiest, hardest-working people. Farmers are perhaps the only people whose profession commands universal respect. Between milking the cows in the morning and getting that milk to market, and collecting the eggs at day's end and getting those eggs to market, who has time to date?

Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 05/18/2020 - 11:53amSince I started walking instead of running I'm enchanted by the simplest things. I guess trading "runner's high" for "walker's enchantment," is not such a bad trade.
