The Carson City School District is pleased to announce new leadership roles for the School Board of Trustees. At their first meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 11, Joe Cacioppo, District 7, was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees.

CARSON CITY — We are now approaching a full year of coordinated efforts to address and minimize the spread of COVID-19. This has presented challenges to many, including health systems near and far. Early this year, Carson Tahoe Health began to pivot service lines and conserve personal protective equipment (PPE).

At the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, an affiliate of Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah and accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, convenience is paramount. Even in the midst of a global pandemic the cancer center has made it a priority to improve their patients’ health, comfort, and well-being by utilizing new and effective technology.

Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury will be the featured speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. In keeping with the state’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines, the meeting will take place online at 12:30 P.M. Tuesday, December 8th. Guests are invited to attend the virtual event via ZOOM.

Gov. Steve Sisolak announced on Sunday that he is lowering occupancy limits and once again reducing the size of allowed gatherings as COVID-19 continues to spread like wildfire across the state, setting records day after day for new reported cases.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a 28-year-old Utah resident who died in a single vehicle crash Thursday on I-80 near Fernley.

The seminar features experts with the Federal Trade Commission, Office of the Nevada Attorney General, and the Nevada Department of Business & Industry Office of Consumer Affairs

Keith and Gwen Thompson are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2020. They both grew up and met in Price, Utah. They moved to Gardnerville two years ago from Kamiah, Idaho.

They have four daughters (Tamara, Tovia, Tracy & Jennifer) eight grand-children and seven great-grandchildren.

They've had 70 wonderful years together and continue to enjoy life!

Michael A. Smith of Lake Coleman, Texas, formerly of Carson City, Nev., died Sept. 5, 2020 at his residence in Coleman, Texas surrounded by his loving family. He was born Michael A. Smith on Feb. 21, 1948 in Coleman to Jack Smith and Edna Elizabeth Keeney Smith.

Lyon County School District’s Superintendent Wayne Workman has been named Nevada Superintendent of the Year by the Nevada Association of School Superintendents. NASS is a statewide nonprofit educational organization which strives to provide support to leaders of Nevada’s 18 school districts and more than 720 public schools.

Former Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas L. Steffen died peacefully from natural causes on Sept. 1, 2020 in Hendersonville, TN. He was 90. Steffen served on the Nevada Supreme Court from 1982 until his retirement in 1997.

Nevada Democrats have, for years, been fine-tuning their political machine. Two years ago was, perhaps, their best proof of concept. Democrats spirited away a key U.S. Senate seat, took control of the governor’s mansion for the first time in two decades and secured a veto-proof majority in one chamber of the Legislature while retaining a majority in the other.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Eric Biggart, Chair of LDS Democrats of America. The group, which is not affiliated the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has as its slogan, "Same faith. Same values. Different perspective." Their mission, as laid out on their Facebook page, is to “promote the full participation of Latter-day Saints in the Democratic Party. We do this by providing educational and social resources to progressive, moderate, and conservative Democrats who are also LDS, and others who are interested in participating in a ‘no shouting’ environment.”

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The 2020 Jazz & Beyond Music and Art Festival will include the second annual Carson City Open Studios Tour with multiple locations. Hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, the Brewery Arts Center is holding a drive-in movie showing of the 1950s classic “Shane” on Saturday. Special medallions commemorating the historical Coach 17 train car will be minted on Coin Press No. 1 at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. Coach 17 is the rail car that was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, when the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed. It is part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s collection.

Tom Gordon of Carson City, Nev. was digging a trench for a water line in his backyard when he began to find bones that turned out to be the remains of Ice Age herbivores.

CARSON CITY — Last week, the Emergency Nurses Association announced that Carson Tahoe Health Emergency Department received the esteemed Lantern Award for 2020, which will span until 2023. The ENA recognizes just 25 emergency departments worldwide that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

In a scene reminiscent of the "old days" a small string of pack laden horses recently made their way into the rugged Toiyabe Mountains of central Nevada. CARSON CITY — Saturday morning five seniors from Carson High School’s Cross Country team celebrated the end of the school year and their sports seasons with a 20.20 mile touch-less relay run. They began on the westside of Carson, ran up through Lakeview to loop around Franktown Road and finished at Bower’s Mansion State Park.

CARSON CITY — Nearly two dozen Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America students claimed more than 40 top-10 awards including five state championships at the Nevada State Business Leadership Conference.
