J.M. “Brew” Brewster of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will be the guest speaker at this week’s Rotary Club of Carson City’s meeting. The meeting takes place Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. Guests are invited to attend via Zoom.

In the pleasantly warm evening air under the trees this past Wednesday, Maurice White, candidate for Carson City supervisor for Ward 2, held a meet and greet at Glen Eagles Restaurant on North Carson Street, and talked to an attentive and respectful audience of about 35-40 people.



PK O’Neill filed late Friday afternoon with the Secretary of State’s Office as a Republican candidate for State Assembly District 40. The District includes all of Carson City, the east side of Washoe Valley and parts of southeast Washoe County.

Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

Saturday, August 3

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including Hot August Nights Kickoff Rallies in Virginia City, history walks at Mormon Station Park, pickleball at the Carson City MAC, concerts at the Brewery Arts Center and TJ’s Corral, a Muscle Powered Sunday morning bike ride and more!

The month of August begins with a presentation on “The Great State Embezzlement,” Mo’z Motley Blues in concert and a presentation on “The History of Baseball in Nevada” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

On Sunday, August 4, at 10 a.m., Glen Whorton, President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, returns to the park to speak on this year’s topic “The Great State Embezzlement.” This is a free event for all to attend.

Carson City is getting better at preserving its history after losing some of its most iconic structures to neglect and disuse. Think the V&T Roundhouse and Children’s Home, though there were many more historic structures that met the wrecking ball ultimately changing how Carson Street looks today.

Here we are, entering the end of the work week. We welcome Friday, April 12, 2019 with a forecast calling for mostly sunny skies with a daytime high in the low to mid 50s. Not bad. Headed into Thursday, April 11, 2019 we welcome Carson City to another day where weather forecasters say there's a chance of rain and maybe even a few snow showers mixed in. Beyond the weather we're looking at a blockbuster day and night filled will activities throughout town. From library presentations, a TV show casting call at the Carson Nugget, an afternoon hike, to a train history presentation, a book signing at the Brewery Arts Center, a CHS theater performance and the Carson City movie screening premier of "The Mustang" filmed at the historic Nevada State Prison, there's something for everyone. A new movie that was filmed at the historic state prison in Carson City “The Mustang” starring veteran actor Bruce Dern and Matthias Schoenaerts, known for the Academy Award winning film “The Danish Girl” and Jennifer Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow,” will premiere in Carson City on April 11 at the Galaxy Fandango Theaters with the first showing at 7 p.m.

A new movie that was filmed at the historic state prison in Carson City “The Mustang” starring veteran actor Bruce Dern and Matthias Schoenaerts, known for the Academy Award winning film “The Danish Girl” and Jennifer Lawrence’s “Red Sparrow,” will be hitting select theaters March 15.

Music, artisans and food come together at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 28 from 4 to to 8 p.m. in a “Musical Jamboree."

Time to get July off to a fun start. The downtown Wine Walk is a great way to spend the day exploring new shops, galleries, and restaurants. If you’re feeling competitive, head down to the Carson Mall for their watermelon and hot dog eating contests. The summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center continue with a singer/songwriter showcase.

Speaker Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will speak on “The Prison in Nevada History” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m.

President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, Glen Whorton, will present a history of the Nevada State Prison from 1861 until its closing in 2012. The presentation will include its territorial origins, famous or infamous incidents, its wardens and inmates.

Author Nancy Raven will speak on her book A Postal Journey: Discovering Nevada Through Its Post Offices at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m.

The Carson City Classic Cinema Club will show the original film, “True Grit,” on Friday and the modern version on June 1 as part of Carson City’s Big Read event.

There is absolutely a little bit of everything this weekend. There’s somewhere to volunteer, somewhere to eat some fundraising pancakes, join in an Asian New Year Lion Dance Parade, Beer Crawl in downtown Carson City, and get your Zumba on. I think the eclectic mix of happenings is one of my favorite things about our corner of the world. Whether it’s the International Film Festival, the Vagina Monologues, or telescope viewing at the WNC Observatory: you can’t tell me there is nothing to do.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will sponsor an educational lecture on the issues surrounding prison medical care by Dr. Karen Gedney.

Dr. Gedney will also discuss her experiences in caring for inmates over a three decade career. The lecture will be presented February 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Offices, 911 East Musser Street. Karen Gedney, MD, ABAARM is board certified in both internal medicine and anti-aging regenerative medicine.

It’s taken a lot of work over these past few years to meet all the requirements needed to be able to convert the historic Nevada State Prison into Carson City’s third history museum.

The long-awaited Animal Shelter has been built and is now home to adoptable pets waiting for a home: take a tour at their open house after the 10 a.m. ribbon cutting. The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society is kicking off a fundraising campaign on Saturday, Oct. 8, with a presentation on a piece of prison history with a political bent.

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. Don’t think that’s all our valley has to offer, though, keep reading for all this weekend’s fun.

Recognizing the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society’s exemplary efforts to protect and restore the Nevada State Prison, a historic Nevada cultural and architectural treasure, the Leisure Hour Club of Carson City recently presented the group with a $500 donation in support of its efforts.

Former Director of the Nevada Department of Corrections and current Nevada State Prison Preservation Society President, Glen Whorton and Society Vice President Robin Bates will update the Leisure Hour Club membership on the current status of the historic Nevada State Prison located in Carson City. The presentation on the NHP to the Club will occur at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, May 18.
