Ceremonies, holiday craft fairs and more: Carson City region set for Veterans Day weekend

Heading into the Veterans Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days. Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. Read on for details.

Friday, November 8
Nevada Humane Society in Carson City to waive adoption fees for cats, kittens this weekend (all day). 549 Airport Rd. Are you looking for a cat? What a coincidence: we have about 400 cats here at our shelter who are looking for you! To help our cats find homes, we are waiving the adoption fees on all cats and kittens at the shelters in Carson City and Reno this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-10.When our shelter becomes full, it limits our ability to help other cats in need throughout Nevada. This means, we need you. But more importantly, our cats need you.

Christmas tree permits on Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts available (all day). Permits to cut Christmas trees on the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will be available for purchase beginning Friday, Nov. 1. The U.S. Forest Service Christmas Tree Program is designed for families, businesses, and institutions wishing to cut their own trees for decorating.

Christmas Book Art is in the Air at Western Nevada College (all day). Come and learn to make some fun holiday art at our holiday workshops at WNC! We are offering both Friday evening and Saturday classes in making fun ornaments, trees, trees and more.... contact WNC (Western Nevada College) for more details and join us!

Reno Jazz Orchestra presents the Artistry of Stan Kenton (all day). The performances will be held at the Good Luck Macbeth Theater, located at 124 W. Taylor Street, in midtown Reno, NV. Tickets are $25 General Seating and $10 for Students (with I.D.) Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra Director Vern Scharbrough, will guest conduct the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s November concerts and feature the music of Stan Kenton on November 8 and 9 in Reno, NV.

Capital City Arts Initiative debuts 'Constellation' exhibit. 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street. Nine students from the University of Nevada Reno’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public from Sept. 16 to Dec. 10, 2019, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

Muscle Powered Friday morning walk at Mexican Ditch. 9 a.m. Meet at Moffat Open Space parking area on Hells Bells Road and Parkhill Drive. Dirt trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City!

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. A Premiere library card is required to attend.

Young at Heart annual Holiday Craft Fair. 5 to 8 p.m. at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Ln. in Gardnerville. This event has grown over the years and this year is the biggest ever. All proceeds from the Holiday Craft Fair benefits the seniors/senior center here in Douglas County.

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson Street. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Joan of Arc, Jules Verne talks on tap at Jack C. Davis Observatory. 6:30 p.m. at 2699 Vanpatten Drive in Carson City. Mike Thomas’ Lecture Series visits Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9 for presentations on a couple of remarkable people from France.

My Thousand Words Book Sculptures: Trees, Ornaments and more. 6:30 p.m. at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Pkwy. This course will teach you to make some amazing holiday creations out of books, including trees and ornaments. You'll even learn how to light up your creations! In addition to the $25 registration fee, a $40 supply fee is due to the instructor at the start of the course.

Performance by Grumpy Old Men. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive. The Grumpy Old Men will be performing at the Carson City Senior Center. Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 to 9:00ish.

Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson Street. Live Comedy every Friday and Saturday night at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the Winner's Club or online. Food specials, comedy shows offered free to veterans by Carson Nugget. Veterans who sign up for Veterans Club will receive two free tickets to comedian Rob Sherwood, with shows on Friday and Saturday night.

Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company presents: Matilda, The Musical. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company is bringing the internationally acclaimed, high-energy, magical “Matilda, the Musical ”to Nevada for the very first time! Based on the Roald Dahl classic novel, the award-winning musical tells of a gifted young girl who develops telekinetic powers to help her overcome the wicked headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull, and save her abused teacher and classmates. Second annual Christ is Christmas Fair. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Sierra Lutheran High School. Sierra Lutheran High School will host the 2nd Annual Christ IS Christmas Craft Fair November 9-10 in the Norm Brauer Gymnasium from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A wide variety of over 40 vendors offering everything from handmade Christmas decorations and gifts, to food samples, to art and jewelry booths and much more will be on display throughout the weekend.

— Paper Poppies for Veterans at Nevada State Museum. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Handcrafting of paper poppies to honor veterans. The Nevada State Museum is located at 600 North Carson Street.

Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Carson City's Proscenium Players to hold auditions for female version of 'The Odd Couple'. 1 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King Street. Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit.

Imaginations Children's Art Class in Virginia City. 1 to 3 p.m. at 55 North R Street. Kids will learn the fun of watercolor and multiple techniques with everyone's favorite art instructor, Emily Reid. Discounts for advance, local, and multiple registrations.

Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson Street.. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. Sunday, November 10
The United States Marine Corps celebrates its Birthday on Sunday. The U.S. Marine Corps was formed as a security force of sorts, serving as an infantry unit aboard naval vessels and was responsible for protecting the ship's officers. Sometimes this was evident with the Marine's quarters positioned between the Officer's quarters and the rest of the ship - to serve as a buffer between them and the rest of the crew.

Dayton Chamber Veterans Appreciation Dinner features former Senator Dean Heller. 5 p.m. at the Dayton Valley Golf Club, 101 Palmer Dr. Mike Kunz and Stephen Hipp, co-chairmen of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce Veterans Dinner and members of the chamber board of directors, announced today that former United States Senator Dean Heller will be the featured speaker at the Chamber's third annual Veterans Dinner.

Monday, November 11 (Veterans Day)

There will be a Veterans Day Parade in Reno along Virginia Street, Monday, Nov. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon. In northern Nevada, Reno is hosting its annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11, 2019. This year’s theme commemorates the centennial of Veterans Day, formally Armistice Day. NDVS will be participating in the parade again this year. Come and join us!

Sparks
There will be a Veterans Day ceremony and Imo Jima Reenactment at the Sparks Marina on Monday morning. Please join us on November 11, 2019 as we celebrate Veterans Day with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza and Iwo Jima reenactment. South Lake Tahoe

American Legion Post 795 hosts Veterans Day ceremony.

American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites residents and visitors to join members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion in honoring all veterans this Veterans Day. The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. Light refreshments will be served.

Formerly Armistice Day, November 11 commemorates the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War I in 1918. It is historically significant that this day continue to be observed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of the eleventh day to commemorate when the guns fell silent at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

“Happy Homestead, is the final resting place for more than 560 veterans and each year our local veteran’s group, Vets in Counseling, places American flags on their gravesites to honor them on Veterans Day. Happy Homestead is located at 1261 Johnson Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

You will find something of interest or my name’s not Mark Twain, or used to be anyways. And this year Virginia City is joining in on the fun along with Carson City. Wow!

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

Mrs. Carson City America, Kassandra Tapia, is set to grace the stage of the Mrs. Nevada America Pageant, scheduled to take place on June 9, 2024, in Las Vegas. She is proudly representing the Capital City, and she aims to not only showcase her poise and grace but also advocate for her powerful platform, Cycle Breakers.

Nevada Author, Sandie La Nae will be selling her Carson City and Virginia City books the three days of the Mark Twain Days, May 10, 11, and 12.

As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

Partnership Carson City has launched “Rediscovering Your Mental Health Series,” a five-week program aimed at promoting mental wellness during Mental Health Awareness Month this May. Each week, participants will have the opportunity to learn new skills and techniques to enhance their mental well-being and foster a healthy community.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.

Organized by Carol Park, the Elks held an open to the public, two-day indoor garage sale at the lodge in March as a fundraiser for Holiday with a Hero. Lodge members donated all items sold and assisted at the event which received excellent support from the community.

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested at a local diner after allegedly stealing a car from a used car lot two days prior to test drive it.

Friday May 10 at 7:30PM, Valhalla Tahoe kicks off their season with a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure,” at the Boathouse Theater. Reno has long been known as “The Biggest Little City.”

The Carson City Symphony Association will present a concert, "Pleasures of Music," on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 N. Hwy. 395, south of Best Buy, Carson City. The concert is a Mark Twain Days event. Admission is free, donations welcome,

Members of the Rotary Club of Carson City will learn how its annual Educational Grant has helped local students at the club’s next meeting. Carson School District K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter received the club’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant last year with the goal of funding the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.

Western Nevada College hosted a ceremony to celebrate students succeeding in training to reestablish themselves in the workforce on Thursday.

UPDATE 6 p.m.: Courtesy of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office: On May 3, 2024 at approximately 1430 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Central Lyon County, Carson City and Storey County Fire personnel to the area of 34 Newman Ln. for a report of motorhome on fire. Upon arrival, it was discovered that the fire had spread and multiple other abandoned vehicles caught fire as well. No one was hurt or injured during the incident. The incident is currently under investigation, which is being conducted by the Nevada State Fire Marshall’s Division.

UPDATE 2:38 p.m.: Firefighters from Storey are also now responding.

UPDATE 2:33 p.m.: Multiple vehicles on the property are engulfed in flame.

Around 2:15 p.m. a fire was reported at 34 Newman Lane in Mound House.

Firefighters from Carson City and Lyon County are enroute to the scene.

UPDATE 1:20 p.m.: According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, a student reported they saw a weapon. The incident was investigated and there was no weapon found. The lockdown has now been lifted and students are leaving the school.

UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Update 05-03-24 at 1:15 p.m.
One student has reported an alleged weapon sighting. It has not been corroborated, but school officials and the sheriff’s office are investigating out an abundance of caution.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The following update was provided by the district:

Carson High School was put on lockdown this afternoon around 12:15 p.m. No person was injured. There is an active situation being investigated in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. We will provide more information as it becomes known. The school is secure. Do not go to the school. No entrances will be permitted at time. The district will provide updates every 30 minutes. Expect the next update at 1:15 p.m.

Carson High School is currently on a lockdown as of 12:40 p.m. Friday, but there has been no incident reported according to Sheriff Ken Furlong.
