Most of us might agree, 2020 was the annus horribilis of our lifetime. But just as the darkest cloud has a silver lining, 2020 has offered one thing about which we can all brag and be proud. I can't think of what that one thing might be just now, though it does occur to me that learning how to cut our own hair might be a thing to celebrate and be genuinely proud, unless of course you're a barber.

Students in Lior Singer’s engineering classes at Western Nevada College must have thought they were going to spend their first day of fall semester eating.

Northbound Interstate 580 lanes will be shifted and reduced directly south of the spaghetti bowl beginning Aug. 16 as Nevada Department of Transportation launches the Spaghetti Bowl Xpress project.

Lyon County Senior Centers in Dayton, Fernley, Silver Springs and Yerington announced Wednesday that they will be participating in the 18th annual March for Meals – a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meal on Wheels and our senior neighbors who rely on the vital service to remain healthy and independent at home. Lyon County Senior Centers celebrations will include various activities throughout the month of March.

The Western Nevada College chapter of the National Student Nurses Association proudly presents our annual Spaghetti Feed, this Friday March 6th, 2020 from 5-8 pm.

Price of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Please come hungry! During our family friendly event we will be hosting our silent auction comprised of items donated by many businesses’ in the Northern Nevada area.

We will also be drawing the winner of our annual 50/50 raffle; the winner will receive 50 percent of the proceeds and the winners of the raffles from years past have made anywhere from $600- $1000.

Support the college’s nursing students by attending a spaghetti fundraising dinner on Friday, March 6 at 5 p.m. at Western Nevada College’s Carson Nugget Hall.

2019 Carson City’s Empty Bowls event was a success! This event would have never been possible without our local restaurants’ donations of several gallons of soup. This year was our first year awarding the best, most popular soup served. It was a very difficult decision to make as all of the soups were phenomenal, but here are our top three winners!

Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

The countdown to Christmas is on as we head into the first day of the work week. Events around the capital city Monday include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, the first day kickoff of a Holiday Gift Making Camp at the Brewery Arts Center, a Carson River Trails Project open house hosted by Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a Carson City Democratic luncheon featuring a Bernie Sanders campaign presentation, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. In December, Mondays don't really seem like Monday. At least for those of us caught up in the holiday spirit of giving and kindness. What a weekend of community fellowship this was among Carson City locals and we're just getting started, counting down the days until Christmas.

The days keep moving along, ever closer to the weekend and huge helpings of Christmas holiday activities. Thursday events around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a meeting with the developer of the proposed Andersen Ranch, a presentation: "Feathers and Furs of the Carson Valley" at the River Fork Ranch, an "End to Prohibition Party" at Gather restaurant, and more.

The break in the stormy weather was a short one, with more precipitation later in the day Wednesday, forecasters say. Snow days, snow way. At least that's what the weather forecast calls for Tuesday. We'll see mostly cloudy skies before another chance of rain or snow arrives midweek and then a larger storm in time for the weekend. As the saying goes of Nevada weather: Wait a minute and it will change. It is also #GivingTuesday. If you have a favorite organization, it's a good time to send a few dollars their way. Around town there's art showings, a fitness walk, hike, dance classes and an old school film favorite at the Brewery Arts Center hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club.

With Thanksgiving leftovers winding down, we're winding up to the second day in December and the first day of the work week ahead, with activities lined up through the weekend. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 31st season of the Nutcracker Ballet, a Feast with a Hero fundraiser at Slot World, Small Business Saturday throughout Carson City and Carson Valley, photos with Santa, a Telegraph Square sign dedication, Polar Express train rides at the V&T Railroad and more!

The last Thursday of November means a big gobble gobble, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy in the games, festivities, activities at home and outdoors. Events are at a minimum, for obvious reasons, but the two big ones are traditions for us in the capital city. The Carson City Turkey Trot at the Governor's Mansion and the free Carson Nugget Thanksgiving community dinner. Enjoy your day and any slight break in the weather. More winter storms are on the way.

With snow overnight into the morning, the eve of Thanksgiving will bustle with last minute food shopping and, for many, preparing for an extended holiday weekend.
