Mayoral candidate to speak at Democratic luncheon

Speaking at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jason Hastings, one of five candidates for Mayor of Carson City. Jason earned a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from UNR in 2012. The primary is set for June 11, with early voting beginning on May 25th. The top two will advance to the general election.

Being a student at Carson High School is rewarding enough, academically speaking, but learning is happening everywhere; however, forcing a teacher to dress in pink, from head to toe, wearing a pink tutu, is a different story and an exciting fundraising opportunity.

Events around the Carson City region for Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Obituary: Valorie Jean Turley

Valorie Jean Turley left our presence Sunday, January 13, 2019. Valorie leaves three children, Jeremy Houston Sheldon, Jerrad Joseph Sheldon, of Carson City, Nevada; and Kourtny Jean Sheldon of Las Vegas, Nevada. As well as her three children, she leaves a daughter in law, Veronica (Mrs. Jeremy Sheldon) and beloved grandchildren,
Helen Bernice Sheldon and Garrett Sheldon.

Following are all of the entries for the 2018 Nevada Day Parade, to take place on Saturday, Oct. 27 starting at 10 a.m. The parade starts at North Carson and William streets, and ends at South Carson and Stewart streets. There are 215 entries in this year's parade.

Senator Square: CHS takes another step to protect its students

In an effort to address social and emotional needs of students, CHS is presenting the SOS (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Program.

Freshman health classes were the first reached in February. The JROTC students and health science classes are next.

New cyber security, military science workforce programs approved for Nevada students

With three Carson High School NJROTC teams headed this month to the semifinals of CyberPatriot, the Air Force Association’s National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, there is now more room for career development in cybersecurity and military science fields for CHS students, thanks to recent career and technical education programs approved by the state's board of education.

Carson City Senior Center celebrates Veterans Day

The Carson City Senior Center presented a salute to Carson City veterans Thursday. The program featured Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and members of the Carson High School JROTC representing each branch of the United States Military.

Equipped only with magnetic-north compasses and maps, these cadets have found their way to the Navy JROTC Orienteering Championships for the third straight year.

Carson High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) will host the Douglas High School Army JROTC cadets in the second annual Army versus Navy flag football game Saturday, Nov. 19 on the Carson High School football field.

A local contingent of the Marine Corps League Silver State Detachment embodied the Latin phrase, meaning “always faithful,” Tuesday afternoon by visiting the Salvation Army Church in South Carson City to honor and pay their respects to the newest members of their distinguished ranks.

Carson High School to host Nevada All Navy JROTC Meet

The Carson High School NJROTC will be hosting the all Navy JROTC Drill Meet for the State of Nevada on Saturday, February 27. The event will start with opening ceremonies at 8:00a.m.

Throughout the day, over 350 cadets from Carson, Centennial, Chapparal, Clark, Damonte Ranch, Eldorado, Luther-Burbank, Reed and Soledad High Schools will compete in competitions testing appearance, drill, academics, physical fitness, and marksmanship.

Carson City Senior Center Celebrates Veterans

Carson City Senior Center honored Veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Salute to Our Veterans Lunch at the Senior Center. With over 200 in attendance, the event paid tribute and respect to our Veterans with opening remarks by Mayor Bob Crowell, Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain.
