Carson City Historical Society is proud to host a lecture on the future of the Nevada State Prison called "The Once and Future Prison," on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. The guest speaker is Glen Whorton, past President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City offers a slate of in-person and online programs in January, ranging from online family projects to historical lectures. The offerings fall under four different programs: Family Fun Saturday and the Francis Humphrey Lecture Series, both occurring online, as well as Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations and Curator’s Corner programming, both available in-person at the museum. The next event, A Day at the Ranchette, is today, Sunday, September 20, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., features the Sagebrush Rebels. This event was moved from Silver Saddle Ranch, and in-person attendance is sold out. However, it will be live-streamed on Facebook by A to Zen Media in Carson City. Mile High Jazz Band Association continues the 2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival’s series of live-streamed, streamed, and virtual events through September. The next event, on Sunday, September 13, features Niall McGuinness & the New World Jazz Project playing soul, Latin, and world jazz from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The five-piece band, including reeds, keyboard, bass, drums, and percussion, will be live-streamed from Empire Ranch Golf by A to Zen Media.

The 2020 Carson City Jazz and Beyond Festival continues its series of live-streamed, streamed, and virtual events through Sept. 27, 2020. The next event, on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., features the Bill Rose and Laurie Blue, a singer-songwriter duo based in Northern Virginia.

When COVID-19 reached Carson City in March, establishments and local businesses were forced to close during the statewide shutdown.

In the midst of a global pandemic, the Nevada State Museum took an optimistic approach to improve and expand its online network. The shutdown offered new opportunities for museum director Myron Freedman to connect with staff members virtually through Zoom Video Communications and update local visitors on social media.

Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. CARSON CITY — Efforts to secure voting rights for Nevada women began as early as 1869 — just five years after statehood – but it wouldn’t be until 1914 that male voters passed the state’s women’s suffrage amendment.

County managers representing Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Churchill and Mineral counties gathered Wednesday in Carson City as a part of Northern Nevada Development Authority's annual “State of the Counties” meeting.

Heading into the Veterans Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days. Events include live comedy, art and heater, multiple holiday craft fairs around Carson City and Carson Valley as well as several Veterans Day ceremonies and offers of gratitude to vets and active duty members of the U.S. military on Monday. Mike Thomas’ Lecture Series visits Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9 for presentations on a couple of remarkable people from France.

Following a collaborative recruitment between the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and Carson Tahoe Health, Lorrel Toft, M.D., F.A.C.C., a cardiovascular critical care physician and researcher, has been recruited as an associate professor for UNR Med’s Department of Internal Medicine as well as a cardiologist on staff with Carson Tahoe Health.

Counting down the hours until the Nevada Day weekend celebration begins, we're heading into Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019 with sunny skies in the forecast through Sunday. Thursday opens the first of the four-day annual RSVP Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park with $1 ride family night hosted by Carson City Toyota. Other activities around the capital city include a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, art showings, library activities, a gold and silver rush presentation at the Nevada State Museum and more.

A 45 minute history presentation on what was perhaps the largest single event ever held in the Eastern Sierra, the 1937 celebration titled, The Wedding of the Waters. The three day affair was created, organized and executed by Catholic priest Father John Crowley.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of jam-packed activities over the next three days. Events include the 100th annual Candy Dance in Genoa, the Carson City Community Center Garage Sale, free walks at Nevada State Parks, Virginia City’s Street Vibrations Fall Rally, the 31st annual All-Breed Dog Shows, The Beatles Flashback tribute band concert and much more!

Heading into Thursday and the final stretch of the work week, it is shaping up to be eventful around the capital city area featuring a morning hike along Clear Creek hosted by Muscle Powered, activities at the Carson City Library, western square dancing offered through Carson City Parks and Recreation, Food Truck Thursday at Mills Park, Ladies' Night Out at Gather, a volunteer information hour and training hosted by Carson City's CASA, a lecture entitled "100 Years Later: The 1919 Transcontinental Military Motor Convoy" featured at the Nevada State Museum, and more.

CARSON CITY — This month’s convoy of vintage military vehicles that traveled though Nevada on U.S. Highway 50 was in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first U.S. Army Transcontinental Motor Convoy.

New York-based playwright, opera librettist, theatre critic, and arts journalist David Cote is the current visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in historic Silver City, Nev.

While he's here in August and September, he hopes to draft a 70-minute, spoken, dramatic monologue for a male performer about carpentry, family, and faith. You can learn more about his creative process during a free, public talk at the Brick at 108 E Proctor Street in Carson City this Thursday August 22, 2019 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in an event that also includes a talk by Chicago-based sculptor Nicole Beck.

National Aviation Day was celebrated Monday, August 19. President Franklin D Roosevelt established this United States national observation in 1939. The date is the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday. Since 1903 when Orville and Wilbur Wright first achieved piloted, controlled, sustained, heavier-than-air flight the world has changes significantly. We are all touched by aviation in one way or another. Everything from people to packages are transported via airplanes.

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. CARSON CITY — From barnstorming pilots of the post-World War I-era — Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart among them — to World War II Army Air Corps training to the present-day Reno National Championship Air Races, aviation has been a mainstay in Nevada.

Joyce M. Cox, author of Arcadia Publishing books on Sparks, Washoe County, and the upcoming "Behind the Arch, The Story of Reno, Nevada’s Unique Chamber of Commerce," will be the featured speaker for the August Archives Appetizer brown bag lunch in Carson City.

This Thursday, July 25, the second Free Artist Lecture for the Carson City Artist Lecture Series will take place at the Brick (The Community Development Building) located at 108 E. Proctor Street. This lecture will feature three artists in two lectures: Morgan Craig of Philadelphia, Adrian Landon and Ewelina Bochenska of New York, who will be presenting together.

Tomorrow, Thursday July 11, the first of the summer artist series — free to the public — will feature artists Claire Scully and Russ Connell from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Each artist will be presenting for 45 minutes. The series will be held in the Brick (the Community Development Building) at 108 Proctor Street in Carson City

On Thursday July 11 at 6:30 p.m., the Douglas County Historical Society will be continuing its Heritage Lecture Series with a history presentation titled, “A Sentimental Journey Along Highway 395.”

The presentation will be made by local author, historian and Douglas County Historical Society member David Woodruff.
