Taste of Downtown, live music, history talks, BMX and more: Carson City region readies for jam-packed weekend

As we head into the final stretch of the week, events around the Carson City region are lined up for the next three days, including museum activities, outdoor concerts, a car cruise Friday at Carson Mall, athletic events, a Carson High School class of 1979 reunion, the Taste of Downtown on Saturday and much more.

Muscle Powered walk at Carson City Freeway Multi-Use Path. 8 a.m. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. A schedule of all upcoming activities is also available.

Enter the Carson City Fair Coloring Contest (all day). The Carson City Fair Coloring Contest is on again for this year, sponsored by Carson Kids Dental. The contest is open to anyone 18 and under. Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more.

History Talk: The Early Years of Mormon Station. 12 to 12:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park in Genoa. Join park staff on Friday, July 12th, for a talk on the early settlement and development of Mormon Station, and what life was like for the early settlers that called this place home. This talk will focus on the 1850’s, and discuss how Mormon Station grew from a remote trading station to a bustling community over the span of a few years.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or old to participate. Shred Kids Mountain Bike Camp. 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Ash Canyon Trailhead, Ash Canyon Rd. This camp will teach ages 9-14 everything needed to become a safe and well-rounded mountain biker. Instructors will be National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) certified coaches from the Carson High School Cycling Team. Instruction will focus on safety, maintenance, etiquette, and proper techniques for uphill, downhill, and cross country riding. Please have your bike inspected by a bike mechanic prior to the camp to make sure it is in working order. A limited supply of bikes and helmets are available if you do not have your own. In order to register for the intermediate level camp, participants must have completed a beginner level camp earlier this summer or the camp last summer. Each day, meet at the Ash Canyon Trailhead on the corner of Winnie and Foothill. Bring sunscreen, water, and snacks each day. Carson Mall hosts Friday Night Car Cruise. 5 to 7 p.m. Carson Mall in Carson City will host a Cruise Night from 5 to 7 p.m. this Friday night, July 19. The cruise will be in the same area as Dutch Brothers. Organizers ask for a donation of non-perishable food. The cruise is open to all makes and models. Call 775-671-8150 for information.

2nd annual Summer Nights at the Dayton Taphouse. 5 p.m. at 160 Main Street in Dayton, Nevada. A cancer diagnosis is life-threatening, financially devastating, and strikes without warning. Even patients who have worked hard all their life can find themselves struggling to afford necessities such as keeping their lights on, buying gas (for travel to treatment), and covering the high cost of medicine. As one of the regions only organizations providing such support for patients, Carson Tahoe is their only safety net. The Revenue Cycle Team is hosting a family-friendly fundraiser for Carson City's local Carson Tahoe Cancer Center and 100 percent of the proceeds will be used to help local cancer patients and their families by providing financial support for necessities such as keeping their lights on, buying gas (for travel to treatment), and covering the high cost of medicine. There will be music, dancing, food, and a silent auction.

CHS Class of 1979 Reunion with One Way Street. 6 p.m. at Living the Good Life Nightclub-Bistro and Lounge. We are going to be getting that class of 79' prepared for their reunion weekend! Living the Good Life is at 1480 North Carson Street. Meet and Greet starts at 5 p.m. Go here for other activities planned.

Weekly Open Mic Night in the Zen Den Stage at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Louise narrates the story of how she met Patsy and the friendship that continued throughout Patsy’s short-lived life and career. The show is filled with everyone’s favorite songs sung by Carson Valley’s own; the talented local singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins.

Friday at the Fox featuring Shane Dwight. 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Bob McFadden Plaza, 223 W. Third Street. Shane Dwight continues chest pounding blues-rock music that has become his signature. A powerhouse guitar player, ace songwriter and tender at heart balladeer, Shane can pull the heart strings together or apart.

Saturday, July 20

Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Run. 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Tahoe Rim Trail — Spooner Summit Trailhead. The Tahoe Rim Trail 100 Mile Endurance Run will be run on single-track trails and dirt roads within Spooner State Park and on the Tahoe Rim Trail located within the state park and on National Forest land, all at or above 8,000 feet of elevation. The 100 mile race will simply be the 50 mile course run twice. But make no mistake, there is nothing simple about the 100 mile course. Please refer to the event website for a course description, elevation profile, and finishing times to get a better perception of the difficulty of this course. All runners must be sufficiently prepared for all trail and environmental conditions. Running any 100 mile race is a true challenge physically, mentally and emotionally. Don’t expect to run a PR here. DO expect to find the finest aid stations in ultra running, epic scenery, and world famous volunteers.

Bingo Blowout at the Carson Mall. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. All proceeds go to American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This event will feature games, food and family fun. $20 for a book of 6 cards per game with a total of 10 games, $5 3 extra cards for all games, $2 bingo dabbers. Prizes include gift cards and gift baskets. Refreshments will be available. Pre-register online and arrive by 10:45 for best seats.

Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.

Northern Nevada Pond Club Pond Tour. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Greenhouse Garden Calendar, 2450 S. Curry Street. Experience the beauty and serenity of a private ponds on this pond tour. Discover how ponds can integrate into any type of landscape and exchange ideas about pond construction and water gardening. Carson City ponds are toured from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Douglas County ponds are toured from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Exact addresses and map will be provided with tickets. LBL Equine Rescue Mustang Trainer Challenge. 10 a.m. at 3315 Hwy. 50 in Silver Springs. LBL Equine Rescue in Silver Springs, Nev., is excited to announce its first Trainer Challenge Judging Day, July 20 at 10 a.m. You will get to watch our trainers show off what they've done with our wild horses! All horses will be available for adoption, including other rescues.

1870 Mint Building Tour. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum. There will be a guided tour of the Carson City Mint Building led by Curator of History Robert Nylen from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Nevada State Museum lecture on Carson City 'CC' Mint Coins. 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Rusty Goe has spent much of his professional life on a deep dive into the history of the U.S. Mint in Carson City. He’s written multiple books on the subject and spent thousands of hours in research, getting to know the people who worked there 150 years ago. Through the years, Goe — a professional coin dealer, author and historian — has held countless coins with the “CC” Mint mark, some with values topping $1 million, and he knows the life stories and travels of many, many individual coins that originated in Carson City in the latter third of the 19th Century.

7th annual Comstock Classic Car Show in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Miners Park. This annual free event presented by the Comstock Classics Car Club. All monies earned go directly to community charities and children’s project for the upcoming year. A great event for all ages. Bring your lawn chairs and make a day of it at Miner’s Park.

Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Aaron Sims to host campaign kickoff BBQ for mayoral candidacy. 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1111 E. William Street. The public is invited to join us for the official campaign Kickoff for Aaron Sims who will be declaring his candidacy for Mayor of Carson City. This event will be a barbecue and a speaking engagement. We will have good food and music. It is Saturday, July 20. The event will be held at the Firefighters Memorial on the East side of Mills Park. Shoe Tree Brewing Co. Punk Show and Beer Release Party. 1 to 6 p.m. at 1496 Old Hot Springs Rd. Carson City’s own Shoe Tree Brewing Company will be hosting a show-and-beer-release party on July 20 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Popular punk band The Lucky Eejits will be headlining the show along with a release of “The Lucky Eegits out of Time Beer” release. Shoe Tree Brewing Company is located at 1496 Old Hot Springs Road next to Sassafras and the Hot Springs.

Lego club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.

2019 Taste of Downtown returns to Carson City. 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at 101 N. Carson Street. Advocates to End Domestic Violence will host the 26th annual Taste of Downtown event in Carson City on Saturday July 20, 2019 in historic downtown Carson City. From 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. more than 35 local restaurants will be serving up a Taste of their menu for ticket holders. Stroll the streets of downtown Carson City, while listening to four bands and enjoying all that the restaurants, shops, and vendors have to offer. All participating restaurants and bands will line Carson Street from Robinson St. to Fifth St.

Levitt AMP Carson City Outdoor Concert: Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater, 449 W. King Street. Two-time Grammy winner Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience is the headline act at this week's concert, with opening act Darabello with the performer Louisa Lopez. Terrance Simien has been the original instrument, the voice, to both express shared human emotions and bring his audiences of a multicultural tour of the world; he has created a blend of “New Orleans-funk-reggae-flavored-world-blues-American-zydeco roots music,” that will move an audience to start grooving along to new, innovative sounds grounded in a Creole tradition.

Night time 'Scorpion Hunt' featured at Dayton State Park. 8:30 to 10 p.m. What nocturnal desert creatures glow neon green under a black light? Scorpions! After a short discussion about scorpions, we will go on a walk through the park with black lights! Participants should wear close-toed walking shoes (no sandals, please), dress in layers for the weather, and bring water and insect repellant. A limited number of black lights will be available to use, but feel free to bring your own! Please note:we will not be catching or killing any scorpions, only looking at them glow under black lights.

Carson City BMX Race for Life. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pete Livermore Sports Complex. 1555 LIvermore Ln. Carson City BMX will host the annual Race for Life on Sunday, July 21. USABMX started this race and fundraising effort to honor Todd Kingsbury, a young BMX rider who fought and lost his fight with leukemia. This race raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Additionally, keeping with Todd’s love for BMX, promoting this race where you do not have to be a USABMX member. So please join us on 21 July, with signups 9 to 10 a.m.. Cost is $10. If under 18, please bring a parent to sign forms.

Rummage sale to benefit local Alzheimer's Chapter. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson Mall, 1227 S. Carson Street. Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Alzheimer’s Fundraiser are hosting a community rummage sale to sponsor the 3rd annual Friends of Coach Blaver Memorial Alzheimer’s Fundraiser in September. Guided walk to the Hanging Tree. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mormon Station Historic Park. Join a park interpreter for a guided walk to the infamous “hanging tree,” and hear the tragic story of how “Nevada justice” was carried out here in 1897. This approximately one-mile round-trip guided walk will primarily follow Genoa Lane. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and bring water.

Carson City's Lone Mountain Veterinary celebrates AAHA Day with Sunday celebration. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital, 780 College Parkway. Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital is hosting a family fun day on Sunday, July 21 to celebrate American Animal Hospital Association Accredited Hospital Day. AAHA-Accredited Hospital Day is a day to celebrate champions for excellent care. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital, 780 College Parkway in Carson City.

Make a Model Covered Wagon. 12 to 2 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. Stop by Mormon Station anytime between 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM to make your own model covered wagon! During this activity, children will be let through the process of making their own model covered wagon using arts and crafts materials. Throughout the activity, we will discuss what life was like for pioneers on the California Trail. This activity is designed for children 5-10 years old, but all are welcome to participate. All necessary supplies will be provided by the park.

A 44-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of unlawful occupancy of real property and violation of a suspended sentence, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report. The man was occupying the home of a deceased person without permission.

UPDATE 3:11 PM: The fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive was contained to the garage and was knocked down quickly, according to CCFD Battalion Chief Jon Pedrini. The fire did not extend to the main structure. No one was home and there were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday morning to a structure fire in the 1400 block of Monte Rosa Drive.

Firefighters in Yerington and the Lyon County Sheriff's Office are on scene Monday morning of a semi truck rollover on Aiazzi Lane and Miller Road in Yerington. The entire area is closed to all traffic.

Nevada Division of Forestry state nursery is open for business beginning Thursday, May 9. When we first bought our home in 1988 with its 2.5 acres, there were some poplars, pines, blue spruce, willows, and grass, but little else. I soon discovered the state nursery and filled the yard with flowering shrubs and other plants. I added lilacs, sand cherries, golden and Nevada currants, sumacs, Apache plumes, and incense cedars.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office arrested a Dayton man Saturday for possession of child pornography. During the investigation, officers also learned the man was a local little league coach.

As part of Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday celebration, the Smokey Reading Challenge is underway. Launched this morning at the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records in Carson City, the program is designed to engage children across Nevada in an exciting reading journey to learn about wildfire prevention, forests, and careers in natural resources with Smokey Bear.

The Nevada Jeep Club held their first Washoe Valley Cleanup on Saturday, May 4 and collected more than 450 pounds of trash along Highway 395.

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club members continue celebrating the organization’s 127th year with a presentation on the upcoming Jazz and Beyond festival.

At the club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, May 16, Cherie Shipley, a member of the event planning committee, will talk about the annual Jazz and Beyond festival, how it formed, and the impact it has had on the community. Jazz and Beyond is scheduled for August 16 to August 25, 2024.
