Carson City is facing the same problems other growing communities throughout the nation are: a lack of affordable housing which in turn is causing a gap in the workforce for important careers that require technical training.

After an almost two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Sparks Mayor Ron Smith has died. He was 71 years old.

Mayor Smith was officially sworn in as the 25th Mayor of Sparks on November 13, 2018. He was elected to the Sparks City Council in November 2006 and was re-elected to four-year terms in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He served as Sparks Mayor Pro Tempore from 2012-2018.

Artist and poet, Jaeda DeWalt wrote, “When we learn how to become resilient, we learn how to embrace the beautifully broad spectrum of the human experience.” If there is one word to describe Pioneer High School’s class of 2020, it would be “resilient.”

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Health recently received an emergency COVID-19 response grant in the amount of $98,960 from the William N. Pennington Foundation. The grant will contribute to needed equipment for Carson Tahoe during this dynamic virus outbreak.

As Women’s History Month comes to an end, the Carson City Chamber Board of Directors announces the recognition of ten exceptional women who have been — and will continue to be — important in the history of this city.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

The Red Hat Society delivered warm bedding and clothing to each of the residents at Richards Crossing in Carson City last week. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society named the “Classy Sassy Bear Ladies” organized a Christmas gift giveaway for the residents. The giveaway, for which planning started over the summer, collected homemade and donated blankets, scarves and socks.

Friends to All is dedicated to bringing joy, cheer and friendship to seniors in our community during the holiday season. Since 1999 this group has been working to meet the needs of those with limited financial resources who are home bound or in care centers with little or no family nearby. Each year 150 to 200 visits are averaged in the Carson City area.

A hit on Broadway, A Year with Frog and Toad was nominated for three Tony Awards – including Best Musical. Based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, and featuring a hummable score by Robert and Willie Reale, this whimsical show follows two great friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – through four fun-filled seasons and tells the story of a friendship that endures throughout.

Wednesday marks 13 years since the opening of the outdoor Labyrinth located at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. The unique space was made possible through a generous donation from the Rotary Club of Carson City.

In 2006, under the leadership of past president Rafael Cappucci, the Rotary Club contributed $75,000 to build the Labyrinth, and gave another $200,000 in support of the Cancer Center project over a four-year period.

Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter welcomes all die-hard Raiders fans to Jimmy G's Thursday, Nov. 7 to view the Raiders take on the Los Angeles Chargers at 5:20 p.m.

Coming off a win of the Detroit Lions, the Raiders are making full use of homefield advantage as they take on division rivals.

Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter will host an Oakland Raider vs Detroit Lions game watch at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3. Game watches are held at Jimmy G's 301 N. Carson St. Club members will bring food to share, while Jimmy G's offers drink specials to club members.

Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter welcomes all Raiders fans to watch the Raiders vs Texans this Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1:25 p.m., at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St. in Carson City.

The Chapter will host a potluck, and Jimmy G's will offer drink specials for Chapter members. A 50/50 drawing will also be held. Winner must be present to win.

A moment of silence will be held in honor of Former Raiders Cornerback Willie Brown, 1967-78, during halftime.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 36th season on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, at 4 p.m., with an “Overture of the Season” concert at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. There's also art showings, the grand opening of Carson City's Postal Annex, family movie night at the Carson City Library featuring "Muppets from Space," as well as Big Band jazz music with a fall theme at Living the Good Life and more. This week, I am traveling to see my family in Texas. Whenever I go back to my roots, I’m always reminded of the deep seedlings that exist here for me. These seedlings are connections made during my formative years, all the way back to kindergarten.
