I'm not sure what got me thinking about cranberries. After all, cranberries are not a food item you purchase and use regularly.

As people gather for the Nevada Day festivities, a notable local business in Carson City will be celebrating a major milestone.

Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day this Saturday, Sept. 26 with a “fee-free” day at Nevada’s State Parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping (Saturday night) and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region. The Dayton Chamber’s 27th annual “Making A Difference” Golf Tournament arrives Friday. Carson City Kiwanis is hosting its seventh annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday with several activities for all to enjoy. Placer County, a 1,400-square-mile destination in Northern California, is inviting responsible leisure travelers in accordance with the California Department of Public Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In response to Governor Sisolak’s Directive 016, relaxing restrictions on some outdoor recreation activities is allowed starting today, if participants recreate safely and in a manner that prevents the spread of COVID-19.

Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department will be reopening the following facilities with restrictions to ensure the health and safety of staff and participants. If you do not feel well, please stay home.

Members of Nevada’s congressional delegation celebrated the White House’s decision Friday to allow small casinos to access a Small Business Administration emergency loan program.

Gov. Steve Sisolak will extend the state’s shutdown order to an as-yet undetermined date and close schools for the rest of the academic year, but he will allow some businesses to reopen if the state sees a consistent downward trajectory of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.

Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Wednesday events include a yoga class, the first of what will become monthly "Welcome Wednesday" luncheons at the Carson City Senior Center, a new shift of hours and days at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

I’ve been working long hours. I hired an assistant to help with some of the projects that I deemed “on the floor” so I could put my effort toward billable hours. It’s been quite the juggling act in 2020. I feel like I’m being given a life lesson in what’s important, what’s crucial, and what keeps me smiling. Oddly enough, they are not all one in the same. Yet, they all have something in common.

Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend. Events ahead around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a discussion on holiday stress and dementia offered by Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, and an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered. Also ahead, Carson City's GOP will host a discussion with several political leaders representing the capital city. There will be a 'Glorious Expanse' artist reception at WNC Gallery, plus library activities and more.

Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. Stop by, bring a turkey and give a local family in need a happy Thanksgiving. Other events around the capital city include a Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training graduation ceremony, a talk about earthquake preparedness hosted by Carson City Native and Newcomers Club, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and more.

The first week of November marches along with sunshine to continue into the foreseeable future. Events ahead for this Thursday include a regular meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Mammovan stop at Nevada Health Centers, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, and an evening with local artist Rebecca Fox at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. Healing Qigong Part 1: A 6-week Qigong series will be offered Nov. 7 through Dec. 19 by instructor Deborah Stevenson at Carson City Yoga.

This relaxing, six-week qigong series promotes balance and renewal, perfect for this holiday season. Healing Qigong Part 1 consists of ten easy movements with an emphasis on gathering “chi” from the universe and learning how to move energy throughout the body.

The movements will be broken down step by step and each class in the series will build upon the previous one.
