I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: August 1-2

I apologize, Carson City. You have some decisions to make. There is quite a bit going on whether you want something family friendly, adults only, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of it all. The weekly Farmers Market at Third and Curry St. is always a good way to start the weekend. Yummy food, a bounce house for the kids, and beautiful flowers are hard to argue with. Keep reading for enough fun to make your head spin!

The kids only have a few weeks left of summer break, so you might as well enjoy the free time. The Nevada Fair at Fuji Park promises to be a great time. Circus performances, a carnival, animal shows, food-eating competitions, balloon animals, live music, funnel cakes and Indian tacos, and more can be found this weekend. Make sure to take the shuttle from the Casino Fandango parking garage; parking at Fuji Park is extremely limited. Table Top Game Day at Nerdvana is another great way to beat the heat and enjoy some family fun.

So you want to be entertained. Let the kids of Youth Theater Carson City wow you with their production of Peter Pan at the Community Center. The Brewery Arts Center is the host of the City Wide Short Film Competition. For the last week, teams throughout Carson City have been scrambling to script and complete a film up to ten minutes long. See what cinematic magic they’ve made, and vote for your favorite. Grab a seat on the Virginia and Truckee if you’re looking for some melodrama. The first of the ‘Dinner and a Show’ trains leaves the station tonight with a performance of ‘Run to the Roundhouse, Nellie’ and a bbq dinner waiting for you when you return.

CW Bayer has the stage in A to Zen’s Zen Den for a Finger-picking good time. The Carson Cigar Company is hosting funky rockers, Magnetic Vice. Catch Carson City locals, The Iron Age, in the Eleventh Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes. The Ormsby Club at the corner of Sixth and Curry has invited Tany Jane to entertain. DJ Dance Parties are at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar and at Living the Good Life.

Sundays are a great day to hit up the Carson City Library now that it’s open seven days a week. A viewing of the movie Persepolis begins at 2 p.m. and is about a young girl during the Iran Revolution in the 1970s. Pop-up Storytime is great choice for younger patrons. The Fair at Fuji Park and the Silver Dollar Classic at Mills Park are still going strong. While you’re at Mills Park, take a ride on the train: rides begin at noon. Genoa is a great place to spend an afternoon. This month’s Sweet Sippin Sunday features Tequila cocktails and music by Carson’s own, Janera Paxton of the Whitehats. Mozart lovers won’t want to miss TOCATTA at the Shepard in the Sky Church for their Mozart in the Mountains concert.

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will hold a "Sheep Talk" this Monday, April 29 from noon to 1 p.m. so residents can learn from Carson City staff about the popular fuel reduction program used annually with the use of "firefighting" sheep.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Crowell Boardroom of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

For many students at Carson High, Monica Weaver serves as a counselor who is dedicated to helping students navigate the challenges that could alter one’s four years of high school. But in the spring, Weaver also stands poolside, coaching the Senators swim team.

Meet Ricky and Reba, a sweet bonded pair who are waiting for their forever home. Sometimes bad things happen to good cats. Nobody knows this better than Ricky and Reba. Approximately 3 years old, they were abandoned when their owner moved, leaving them to fend for themselves on the streets of Reno. It wasn’t easy.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Minden and Gardnerville, offering an alternative route to the main U.S. Route 395 through town.
