Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon will feature Nevada historian CW Bayer, who will talk about his new book “Reno’s Jazz Hysteria — cabaret and ballroom.” Bayer's meticulous research revealed that the origins of Nevada’s “sin industry” were rooted in Reno's scandalous “jazz hysteria,” a pop culture sensation that swept the nation beginning in the 1920s.

Heading into Wednesday, June 12, 2019 means we are half way through the work week. Temperatures will be around the 90 mark with a chance of afternoon showers. Activities lined up include art classes, a hike designed for tots through Carson City Parks and Recreation, a Ninja aerobic class at Yaple's Ballroom and you can hear local author CW Bayer talk about three of his books on area history at Browsers Corner Book Store. Local musicians will bring their voices and talents to A to Zen to raise funds to help support services for Carson City’s homeless.

Singers, songwriters, musicians and more will play throughout the day on Saturday, March 30, 1 to 9:30 p.m.

Donations raised will benefit RCIL and The Do Drop In, a local nonprofit that provides a place for homeless residents to spend their time and receive important job and living resources.

Good morning, Carson City, and welcome to the start of a brand-new week! Now that we've dug ourselves out of another heavy weekend snowstorm, we are ready to take on the days ahead.

Local musician and historian CW Bayer will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon.

Back by popular demand, Mr. Bayer will read from and talk about his book, "Rhymes From The Silver State," a collection of Nevada lyrics — songs and poems — reflecting both the mining era (c. 1854 to c. 1905) and the sagebrush and pine era (1905 to c. 1932). Nothing defines the historical culture of the Silver State better than these pieces.

Please join us at Piper's Opera House for an intimate evening of music. This gathering will showcase various singer-songwriters and touring artists from the West Coast.

Hello Carson City. The final day of 2018 arrives with crisp and cold conditions outside, a reminder that winter has finally dug in. Are you ready for 2019? Whether your plans are to venture out to a bevy of parties and celebrations around town tonight, or plan to stay at home, we wish you a safe and Happy New Year.

Nevada historian CW Bayer will be the featured speaker at a New Year's Eve luncheon sponsored by Carson's Democratic Men's Committee. The topic of will be "William Ormsby and the founding of the Nevada Territory."

This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, December 31, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Admission is free and no donations are requested.

This presentation will simply be an opportunity for Carsonites to learn more about the legacy of this little-known but fascinating Nevada historical figure. All are welcome.

Here’s what’s going on around town today, Wednesday December 19:

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Chris ‘CW’ Bayer will be entertaining the members of the Leisure Hour Club, Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. According to CW Bayer, he will be “singing and telling lies” for the Club during his performance.

August comes to an end today, and with it the end of an era. You are reading my last weekday list of things to do. Celebrate the unofficial end of summer with ‘Cruise Night’ at the Carson Mall, some great live music, or a comedy show.

As your reward for making it through the first school-week of the year, you’ll find plenty of fun ways to celebrate. Hopefest8 at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center is a free concert featuring folk/pop singer, Tyrone Wells, bringing awareness and raising funds for local patient resources. The grand prize of their raffle is a brand-new car, so good luck. It’s a birthday bash at Living the Good Life. Wish proprietress, Gina, many happy returns and groove to the sounds of the Trippin’ King Snakes.

It’s a very special Friday for the kids of Carson City: it’s the last day of summer vacation. Take full advantage of your free time and check out some of today’s activities. Live music at McFadden Plaza tonight features local cover band, Deception. The Bowers Mansion Bluegrass Festival kicks off tonight with a band in the Davis Creek Campground. The U.S. Air Force’s Jazz Ensemble performs at the Bob Boldrick Theater as part of the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival. Free tickets have been available at the Chamber of Commerce for a few weeks, and if any are left, their numbers will be limited.

It is finally Friday. As August melts away, it brings us closer to the new school year. Carson High returning students are invited to the Senator Kick-off this morning to get their fill of back-to-school updates. Families will love the Movie in the Park; bring a blanket or chairs and come prepared to enjoy ‘Coco.’ Three days of high-flying fun begins today at Heritage Park in Gardnerville as the Splash Dogs competition gets underway. You will always find live music around town on Fridays, but during the Jazz and Beyond Festival, it seems like music is everywhere.

Due to heavy smoke settling on the area, the RoseBud's Dance Band's performance for Monday, Aug. 6, as part of the Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival has been moved to inside the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St. The concert was originally planned for Comma Courtyard, but the performers want to present the event in a comfortable and healthy atmosphere.

Get ready for all things shiny, whether it be brass or chrome. You’ll find plenty of horns playing during the Jazz and Beyond Music Festival that kicks off today. Just about every event is free to the public and family friendly, so get ready for a melodic few weeks. The historic Bliss Mansion, across the street from the Governor’s Mansion, hosts the opening night Garden Party. Hot August Nights gets an early start in Virginia City with a show and shine and poker run; 400 classic cars are waxed up and ready to impress.

FRIDAY, August 3: Things to do in Carson City

Friday opens the 15th annual Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival in Carson City that features 17 days of music, art and film at multiple venues in Carson City, August 3-19.

Music, artisans and food come together at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 28 from 4 to to 8 p.m. in a “Musical Jamboree."

Independence Day isn’t until Wednesday, but the red, white, and blue celebration starts now. For a complete listing of upcoming Independence Day events and fireworks displays in the area, you can go HERE. See the trains under steam at the Nevada State Railroad and ride the rails to your heart’s content.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and there will be plenty of ways for the family to enjoy spending time together all weekend long. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. True Grit: A Celebration of Old West Culture from miners, pioneers, ranchers and outlaws, will be featured this Saturday at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

Hold onto your hats, Carson City, we’re in for a busy weekend. Several events over the last few weeks were re-scheduled due to weather: today you’ll find the make-up for The Greenhouse Project's Early Spring Plant Sale and the Carson High Safe Grad 5K Run/Walk. Get your Roller Derby fix with a scrimmage and a Junior Victory Rollers bout against Santa Cruz. The Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center is where you’ll find ‘Carson’s Got Talent.' Cheer on your favorite local performer and help raise funds for the Senior Center’s Meals on Wheels Program. You’ll have to keep reading, this is just the tip of the fun-time iceberg.

One-time Carson City resident Mark Twain once described genuine music as the kind that will "suffuse your system like strychnine whisky."

To experience it, Twain's advice was to "just smash your piano and invoke the glory-beaming banjo!"

Brrrrr. That chilly winter air has finally made an appearance, so pile on the layers and stay cozy. I’m going to keep my fingers crossed that some white stuff sticks to the mountains. Valentine’s Day is on Wednesday, so you’ll want to make reservations if you’re planning on dinner with your sweetheart. The Be Mine Gift and Craft Fair at the Carson Mall is a great place to find something unique for your one and only.
