It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

Carson City parks foundation pick Friends of Silver Saddle, Cinderlite as 2020 Community Award recipients

Periodically, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation recognizes individuals, organizations, and businesses for having made notable contributions to our community and for their support of the Foundation’s and Carson City Parks Department’s missions by selecting them to receive a Community Award. FCCPR’s Board of Directors recently selected Friends of Silver Saddle and Cinderlite Trucking Corporation and Materials (Cinderlite) for this year’s Community Awards.

Carson High School seniors earn more than $1 million in scholarships

Nearly 70 Carson High School seniors were recognized Thursday night for collectively earning more than $1 million in scholarships (a number that will continue to rise). Their accomplishments were celebrated in a virtual awards ceremony, Thursday, May 14, which highlighted the academic success of the Class of 2020.

The Parks Foundation is saddened to learn of the passing earlier this week of Sandy Osheroff, the Foundation’s longtime Treasurer.

Parks Foundation president, David Johnson, announced on Friday that the Foundation’s Board of Directors, continuing the Foundation’s practice of recognizing outstanding contributions in furtherance of Carson City’s parks, recreational facilities and open space, designated Sandy Osheroff as the “2020 Volunteer of the Years” at their December meeting.

Carson City student picked as Society for Range Management delegate at upcoming forum

Carson High School Senior Cade Crookshanks, 17, has been selected by the Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management to participate in the High School Youth Forum, a SRM sponsored youth activity held jointly during the 73 Annual SRM meeting. The meeting will be held in Denver, Colo., Feb. 16-20, 2020.

The Jukebox International Film Festival is the place music and flicks collide, bringing enthusiasts and artists together from across the country to the capital city for three days, offering free showings, meet-and-greets and more.

The Capital 15 Fun Ride marked the start of the fourth annual Carson City Off-Road races on Friday in downtown Carson City.

University of Nevada graduates largest class to date

The University of Nevada, Reno through the weekend will be conferring 3,201 degrees, the most degrees ever distributed in one semester.

Due to inclement weather, all ceremonies were moved to the Lawlor Events Center instead of the University’s quad.

Carson High School's Wind, Blues Jazz ensembles win big at Music in the Park Festival

CARSON CITY — The Carson High School Wind Ensemble and Midnight Blues Jazz Ensemble performed in southern California taking home numerous awards at last weekend’s Music in the Parks Festival.

Nevada Letters About Literature student competition winners named; advance to national competition

Nevada Humanities has announced the winners of the statewide Letters About Literature program. 243 students from Nevada submitted entries to the national competition at the Library of Congress, and nine Nevada students placed in the top three of their respective judging categories and will be honored in a ceremony in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The first place winners in each category will represent Nevada at the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Fishing Report: Weather should be cooperative for Opening Day

Hello fellow anglers, opening day fishing season for California is only a week away. But, before we get to your pre-season report. There are rumors that may have fact to them going around.

California is looking into changing fishing seasons on many lakes and streams. Some areas may be open all year round and possibly change restrictions on others. Since Topaz is a bi-state body of water, the opening day ceremony that so many have come to love and look forward to on January 1st of each year may be a thing of the past.

Three Carson City art students named 2019 Scholastic Art Award winners

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Museum of Art announced the 2019 Scholastic Art Award Winners, and on the list were a senior and junior from Carson High and one seventh-grader from Carson Middle School. Emily Richardson, 17-years-old, Sarah Woods, 17-years-old, Keira Serpa, 13-years-old, were all recognized as Gold Key winners.

January presentations statewide teach radon safety, offer free radon test kits

CARSON CITY — January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide.

Local Carson City woman honored in CNN Heroes Award Ceremony, discusses future of ESL program

Florence Phillips of Carson City was honored as being one of the TOP 10 CNN Heroes in an award ceremony for her work providing free English as a Second Language in-home tutoring to the our community.

Now, she wants to continue to expand the program.

Lights, camera, action! The Second annual Jukebox Film Festival begins today at the Carson City Community Center. Two full days of features, documentaries, and short films with music as the uniting theme will be shown at the Carson City Community Center: 30 unique titles representing 29 different filmmakers from countries around the world. Blood Drum Spirit, a jazz band with an African influence, is the focus of one of those films and will be performing for free at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint this evening.

What a day. The Concert Under the Stars brings Jefferson Starship to the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Show. Get there early to peruse the silent auction items and food vendors; the annual fundraising benefit for the Greenhouse Project is always the talk of the town. The Greatest Showman on Earth makes an appearance at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch: it’s Chautauqua night, and Doug Mishler will be portraying “Circus Showman P. T. Barnum.” The Stewart Indian School in east Carson City has history reaching into the early days of our state.
